So I bought a 12-pack which has a couple of the regular Latitude 48 as well as 2 each of the deconstructed Latitue 48's that are single hop version. Simcoe, Zues, Halertauer Miff., East Kent Golding, and Antenaum. The base beer reminds me a bit of the Mikkeler single hop series. Too much caramel malts, and malt base in general too let the hops shine through. I'm still getting the hops really well in this beer though and here's what I think about it.

appearance - copper-redish color. good head that disapates, but the lacing is wonderful. Sticky.

smell - Caramel hits me first off. That's not what I was looking for. Then I get some orange rind but that's about it. Maybe a little lemon in there as well as some floral and herbal notes. Not bad, but loads of caramel.

taste - caramel malts again lead the way with grapefruit, pine, and breadiness blending in nicely in the middle. finish's with a nice bitterness.

mouthfeel - medium mouthfeel with medium carbonation. Kinda slick and soft mouthfeel

overall - It's possible that the caramel malts are shinning through because this is past it's prime. not sure. I like the combination of hops that come through in the flavor, and the bitterness is nice, but the aroma isn't quite where I'd like it to be. Nice beer over all. I'm excited to sample the single hop versions.

I really like this offering by Sam Adams. I generally like their Boston Lager as far as somewhat mass-market beers go. I think that on the whole they've managed to be a very solidly good company despite their size. This is my first venture into the less-common brews that Sam Adams puts out. I've previously had their Boston Lager and their Summer Ale - both of which I enjoy.

The Latitude 48 has everything I want in an IPA. It's taste is slightly (but not overwhelmingly) bitter, and it goes down easily. It has a pleasant deep amber color and a nice head when poured into a glass. The mouthfeel is smooth, and it doesn't go down heavy like some IPAs (which, don't get me wrong, I like a lot, but just not all the time).

On the whole, I'd recommend the Latitude 48 IPA as a good, not too complex, easily drinkable IPA. It's a perfect beer for the summer, and I'll be getting more soon.

A sixer shared with a good friend of mine.

A: Light amber with moderate head and retention.

S: Mild hop malt and citrus.

T: Same as the smell. Well balanced.

M: Smooth with mild bite. Refreshing.

O: Like most Sam IPA's, it a good starter, but not intense or very complex. Decent.
