12 oz bottle poured into a Mad Elf snifter

Pours deep reddish amber with one finger of foam that leaves abundant lacing. Aroma is a little boozy with some sweet plum and faint hop bitterness.

Very malty, with a bit of metallic twang and lingering bitter aftertaste. Quite sweet, but there is some hop flavor buried in the sweetness. I'd prefer the hops to be a little more prevalent. Mouthfeel is viscous, and the sweetness does a good job of masking the alcohol that was evident in the nose. Overall, pretty good, I just prefer a little more hoppiness to my Barleywines.

All in all I'm excited for this year's Longshot lineup... Barleywine, Old Ale, and Saison!? Props to Sam Adams for going outside the norm.

Ferric oxide orange with a reddish glow when backlit with the rising sun. The upper third of the snifter contains a lovely looking lid of pastel gold foam that is surprisingly sticky. Plenty of persistence is a positive as well.

It smells like this offering will favor the more pale malts, with a helping hand from caramel. Juicy fruit is present, though the more citrus zesty qualities of the hops must have faded in the slightly more than one year since the release.

Longshot Mile High Barley Wine Ale is a pretty good version of the style, but it will have to reach another gear with warming in order to get the 4.0 for taste. The dominant flavor is lemon-accented iced tea, which is a bit of an odd vibe for an American barleywine.

More malt (especially caramel) would have improved things. The fruitiness is of the citrus sort, with perhaps an assist from figs, though nothing darker than that. Sweetness and bitterness are both moderate and balanced. There's slightly too much tang, however. Hard to believe this one of the three best beers entered last year.

The mouthfeel isn't full enough or creamy enough for the style/ABV. It's still enjoyable in an easy drinking kind of way. The carbonation doesn't make an impression in either direction, which is a victory of sorts.

Most of the Longshot beers from Boston Beer Company are solid. Ben Miller's Mile High Barley Wine Ale falls a little short of that mark, but I still don't regret the purchase. Especially since it was just a single. Bottom line: not the high-altitude ale that was expected.

Third and final Longshot beer for me to try.Poured a deep rich bronze infused russet,a fluffy one finger slight off white head atop that settled slowly into a creamy froth leaving broken rings of lace behind.Big caramel and dark fruit in the nose,there is a zip of sweetish alcohol as well,a light and I mean light whiff of herbal hop comes thru as well.Flavors start out massively sweet with big caramel,dark fruit,and cake notes but as the beer warms there is some drying citric/leafy hop making a presence in the finish.Its big and pretty sweet but its a nice barleywine.

A: a rich amber bergundy that has a very thin lasting head.

S: bitter citrusy hops that are faint as well as some dark fruit lingering somewhere in the background.

T: an initial taste of hops/citrus that fades to the barleywine flavor as it passes over the back of the tongue.

MF/D: a slight tingle throughout, an enjoyable afternoon deck beer, way too smooth for a 9.8%, though now i know where the warmth comes from. thank you ben!

In a snifter this beer was a ruby red color with just a hint of head around the rim. It had a very sweet aroma, mostly sweet fruit, and some caramel. Taste of plums and raisins, caramel, and hops late. My first few sips I thought this was way too sweet, but then the beer recovered and became less cloying and more balanced. Good effort.

Notes from summer 2010.

Pours a rich reddish brown with 1.5 fingers of persistent head and some nice sticky lacing.

Smell is primarily caramel malts with a hint of hops.

Taste is similar to smell. Creamy malt with a slight caramel and an aftertaste of dark ripe fruit.. A little warming from the alcohol.

Very creamy medium mouthfeel with some faint lingering hops.

Relatively easy drinking for a barleywine, very nice but a little too much caramel malt.

12 ounce bottle, that came in a sixer that included 2 other Long shot brews from S.A. Best before dating notched onto the side of the label. Pours a nice rich shade of dark of rouged amber, clear, darker tan head, that stays at the thick film stage, and leaves ample circular bits of stickage on the glass. Nutty and caramel infused nose, leads to a nice smokey strong ale tasting 'barley wine". Notes of booze soaked plums, light woodiness, more nuts and smooth caramel. Super smooth and coating on the tongue, teeth and in the mouth.Quite respectable and highly drinkable ale, not quite sure if this is really a bwine.

The beer pours a dark amber color with a white head. The aroma is caramel malt, brown sugar and some citrus hops. I also get some alcohol. The flavor is a mix of medium bitter orange hops, caramel malt and alcohol. I also get some brown sugar and possibly a little bit of piney hops. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Snifter.

Appearance: Beautiful magenta red with very wispy head. No lacing.

Smell: Caramel, plum, cherry, alcohol and a nice blast of citrus hops.

Taste: Fairly sweet malts with caramel, plum, dark fruit, citrus and molasses. While there is quite a bit of hoppy citrus flavor, there really is not much hop bitterness - just a twinge of spice and bitterness at the end.

Feel: Low carbonation, full smooth body, quite warming.

Drinkability: Not much bitterness for an American Barleywine, as it seems more like an English Barleywine with a lot of citrus. However, this is possibly the most approachable Barleywine I have had.

12oz bottle poured into a DFH Signature glass.

Pours a ruddy brown with almost no head but a bit of light white lacing around the rim. Nose is malty and sweet with a bit of fruity hop notes.

Taste is a bit metallic, but sweet and malty with a very clean finish. It's got a very full and creamy mouthfeel is very nice carbonation. Overall a pretty solid brew.

LongShot Mile High Barley Wine Ale is a beer that is part of a 2010 variety 6-pack from Sam Adams Longshot Contest. I bought this earlier in the year, but it didn't seem right to drink this beer until now when the even temperatures finally fell into the low 60's.

I poured the barley wine into a tulip that concentrated the aroma of the beer. The beer was a russet brown with a nice head of tan foam that clung to the glass. The beer smelled like caramel, backing bread, and pine wood. The beer tasted sweet and fruity like baked apples and pear with a clean but fierce hop punch.

12oz into an Orval Chalice

Pours a murky brown color with very little head. Minimal lacing.

Aroma is subdued. Sweet, spicy malts are apparent.

Taste is primarily malts. Hops are distant if they are there at all. This really tastes more like an English Barleywine, and I would have scored it higher if it were classified as such, Doesn't taste bad, just weak for an American Barleywine.

Mouthfeel is medium-heavy. Prety Nice.

This is a decent, smooth brew. Nothing earth shattering, but a nice change of pace for Sam Adams.

ST: 12 oz bottle poured into a Duvel glass

A: Thick white head that sticks around, high carbonation steadily rises through a burnished brown body. When held to the light it glows a brilliant gem like red.

S: Pine, caramel, flowers, yeast.

T: Floral hops, sugary malt, fruity notes, caramel and doughy yeast with a nice soft finish.

M: Though it feels heavy, like most barley wines, the high carbonation keeps this beer free from any syrupy consistency. The clean smooth finish helps.

D: Totally worth drinking multiple times, however, it does have high alcohol content and it is a heavy beer.

Overall: Wow, I am impressed. This is a very nice barley wine. It has impressive depth, yet it manges to integrate the high alcohol content with ease. Some barley wines can seem sweet because of a long sticky finish. However, this one manges to avoid that problem because its finish is cleaner.

(Served in a snifter) Best before Sept. 10 it was
A- This beer has a dense but clear deep copper body with a sea of microbubbles. There is a creamy beige head that pushes above the rim of the glass and holds its shape. The head makes rings on the glass with each sip.
S- The clean aroma has dark fruits qualities to the malt sweetness and the fruitiness grows as the beer warms. There is some nougat melanoidin qualities to follow and a green hop note in the finish.
T- The slightly sweet fruity malt flavor grows in fruitiness as the beer opens up. The soft green flavor and bitterness of hops lingers in the finish with a candy sweetness. There is a very faint alcohol taste to the hop bitterness in the finish. A nougat melanoidin flavor comes through in the malt and grows as the beer opens.
M- This beer has a full creamy mouthfeel with no real alcohol heat noticed.
D- The big sweetness doesn't have a lot of malt depth to it but has a bit of dark fruit and melanoidins to it. The hops bitterness is soft but pleasant. As the beer opens up the melanoidins really grow and become a bit off putting and the sweetness becomes cloying. There is really nothing to support or balance those flavors with the hops and alcohol both being pretty soft.

Pours a clear dark reddish-amber color beneath a good sized off white head. Slow dying lacing last a while as you drink this longshot winner.

The aroma and taste are very similar with a very light alcohol hint that almost dominates over the hops and malts. Light citrus and light caramel malts combine to form a complex aroma that follows through throughout the drinking process. This is really a beer to be tried, as are all the long shot winners, each has a taste that reminds you of certain tastes or aromas without forcing them on you. I can see this recipe being a staple on somebodies menu or at least it should be, I wonder if these recipes are given to the public so micro and macro brews can explore and expand the beer vocabularies?

Anyway, if you get the chance give this a try, even if 9%+ beers aren't your thing. If you give a beer like this a honest chance you may or may not like it, but you will definitely want to try more and more different kinds and styles of what is widely known as BEER.

Crystal clear garnet colored beer. It pours well, forming a thick tan head. Very bubbly but It doesn't last forever. Some soapy residue coating the edges is all the reminds you of what was.

To put it bluntly this beer smells alright. There is a nice thick malt nose that ranges from cereal breads to sweet corn. Big chunks of hops also bite at my nose hairs. They aren't as identifiable as they are just present. Slightly piney and hinting at citrus, in the very least they are for sure there.

Taste is, well again to put it bluntly... good. Those scents carry over from the nose and give you a warm malty beverage with hints of hop flavor. There is a boozy cherry tart taste that grows on you but in the long run tastes a little much like cough syrup.

The mouthfeel has some sharp hop bitterness to it which nicely prickles the tongue. Mild carbonation helps define the flavors and doesn't distract with much more then a light sizzle. A good beer but I've had much better barley wines. Don't get me wrong this is a tasty beer, but not much more then average. Worth checking out but I am honestly glad it was part of a sample pack with two other beer styles.

This one turned out to be pretty good for a stupidly chilly NW Ohio mid May.

The color is a bright, deep coppery orange. A small off-white head forms and fades to foam as expected for the style and ABV. Also as expected, only very light spots of lacing were left clinging to the glass.
The aroma balances evenly with a crackery malt and something like a caramel malt with toasty bread/biscuit notes on one hand with pine resiny and citric hops on the other.
The sweetness falls to the foreground a bit, though it remains evident in the flavor, giving way instead to the strong malt combination and heady alcohol, malts now somewhat more dominant over the hops. There's the underlying note of dark fruits that should accompany a barleywine, though not as present as might be expected. A light astringent note just peeks out here and there.
The body is moderate with light carbonation and a somewhat warming feel to it. It's not big and bold, it just is, though certainly not flat and with some depth to it.
While it certainly has more character than others, I suppose this beer's somewhat subdued for a barleywine. All in all, certainly well done, though.

i aged this beer about 6 months before i drank it!

damn great beer altogether!...great dark appearance with i nice head that holds!

smell is of strong malt....very little alcohol present....the hop hold together nicely!

taste is incredible nice strong barley taste...the hops are still noticeable....

the feel is very dry like it should be

overall this beer is a great example of a an outstanding barley wine....that would rival any other brewery!

Served cool in a tumbler, Mile High is a deep amber red color with great clarity. The head is almost nonexistant.

Aroma is sweet, malty, and full of dark fruits.

Flavor is very strong, very hoppy, but also seems fairly well-balanced. There's even a little roasty malt that adds another dimension.

Mouthfeel is medium-full in body and moderate carbonation.

Overall a nice enjoyable barleywine with a unique roasty quality.

Great big head of tan cream sits on top, although at 9.8% it's no surprise that it doesn't stand up long. Leaves dots of lace. Color is that scorched and burnt candy-apple red that your typical American barleywine usually sports.

Big rush of toffee, molasses, cherry, vanilla, grapefruit rind and alcohol into the nostrils, each component in equal measure. Very Bigfoot-ish, which I absolutely welcome in any barleywine that's not Bigfoot.

Just like the nose, the flavor is toffee, molasses, cherry, vanilla, citrus rind and alcohol. Toss in some maple syrup and turn it all up a notch, and you have one completely wonderful barleywine. Hops show up most dominantly in the finish, paired up nicely with a gooey malty caramel/toffee base. Lotsa hops, even more lotsa malt. An American-style barleywine, big, bold and boisterous, yet possessing plenty of class and clearly made with care.

Super-creamy in the mouth, rounded, smooth, velvety...just enough bubble to prop up the texture a bit. Ultimately, this is how a barleywine should feel. Yeah, this one fires on all cylinders.

Huh. Like the Old Ben's Ale from the Longshot series, this impressed me much more the second time around, days after my first try. Who knows why. I do know I'll be wanting more of each before this year's Longshot series disappears. Cheers to Ben Miller (he created this bad boy).

Firebrick red-brown in color with a stunted beige head that fade initially, then lingers above the liquid for a while leaving sheets of lace.
The aroma is full of toffee, fruitcake, dates and raisins and plums, and all things brown sugar and dark fruits. Some floral, resiny, alcoholic bitterness gives a counter-punch.
It's a general mirror, taste-wise. Lots of brown sugar, toffee, raisins, and figs. Hops don't bring much to the table, but add enough bitterness to stave of stagnancy and invite another sip. Alcohol is in the mix, with some slightly woody, brandy tones.
The mouthfeel is over-gassed, in a cola sort of way. It seems artificial and force-fed. It's gassy feel would be better flat-lined, as it just doesn't feel right for something of this strength. Fizzy booziness is a strange sensation.
With its bizarre fizziness and general fruitiness, it's a bit like an Imperial Wine Cooler.
The mouthfeel doesn't work for me in this. The rest is salvageable. A Malty, semi-fruity, relatively alcoholic,fizzy English-leaning Barleywine.

A good drinking barleywine. Lots of favour, distant cherry and fruitiness, complex malts, a bit of citrus. Above average mouthfeel.Brown colour, some off-white head. Aromas of barleywine.Some chocolate malts, very nice with supper. Bottle from Premiere.

12oz bottle, goblet, enjoy before September 2010 notched on the mutilated rear label.

Possibly one shade of red darker than the Old Ben's Ale of the Longshot six-pack, and a marginally better head as well.

So they included a beer with a higher hopping rate! Lovely, but it isn't that hoppy. Ladies perfume, a whole sack of caramel malt, and fresh floral citrus in the nose.

Huge caramel sweetness that is pretty well balanced by bitter and flavor hops. Bitter alcohol, bitter oily orange peel, flower petals, a little bread, and either grain husks or oaky vanilla. There are surely is some vanilla lurking. Overall quite a good, straight forward, sweet barleywine with a perfume quality.

Creamy and full on the palate. It's a shame that the Longshot series isn't bottle conditioned. This is a malt monster.

At 9.8% abv and an alcohol ring appearing when I swirl, this isn't an extremely drinkable beer. It is too sweet to be so.
