12oz into an Orval Chalice

Pours a murky brown color with very little head. Minimal lacing.

Aroma is subdued. Sweet, spicy malts are apparent.

Taste is primarily malts. Hops are distant if they are there at all. This really tastes more like an English Barleywine, and I would have scored it higher if it were classified as such, Doesn't taste bad, just weak for an American Barleywine.

Mouthfeel is medium-heavy. Prety Nice.

This is a decent, smooth brew. Nothing earth shattering, but a nice change of pace for Sam Adams.

Bottle share thanks to Toby. Pretty average barley wine, amber with average head. All around nice aroma and taste. Not much else other than the celebrity endorsement.

I discovered a bottle of this in my cellar a few days ago that I'd forgotten I was aging. Cracking it open this Memorial Day evening. Poured out of the 12 oz. bottle into one of my tulip glasses. This beer pours a very hazy/cloudy medium copper color with a creamy/frothy looking, slightly off-white/tan head that's about an inch thick initially when first poured. Settles eventually to a thick surface layer coating with a medium sized ring lining the inside of the glass. Heavy aromas of caramel malt sweetness along with along of a bit of maple syrup, brown sugar, hints of peppery spice, and some dark fruit notes such as raisins and plums. Has a nice caramel sweet flavor along with some definite maple syrup and brown sugar followed by hints of peppery spice notes and the aforementioned dark fruit notes. Not really any discernible hop presence for my palate, which should come as no surprise I suppose being that this beer is a little over 6 years old at this point. I thought the overall flavor profile was quite excellent though. Has a slightly crisp, but mainly very smooth, somewhat frothy and creamy, medium to full bodied mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. Very easy to drink. Has a clean finish with a nice sweet, slightly spicy aftertaste. Too bad I'll likely never drink this beer again because this was quite enjoyable indeed.

Had a vintage 2010 of this, served just cooler than room temperature. Boozy aroma with some dark fruits. Thankfully the flavor isn't as boozy. Nice blend of sherry, sweetness, dark fruits, and raisin. Hint of spice. Nice heavy body that's warming. Overall well done from SA.

Sampled March 2012
Best by date of September 2010; Sampled March 2012 & stored in my fridge the whole time
A steady pour into my tulip glass produces a fat, three-finger thick, densely creamy, pale brown / amber tinged, dark tan colored head. The beer is a full amber color that shows a brilliantly clear, rich amber hue when held up to the light. The aroma smells of citrusy / piney hops backed by supporting caramelized / toasted malt. Specific notes of grapefruit zest, Curacao orange, bright tangelo zest when you dig, as well as some lychee notes, a citrusy spiciness that leans towards / suggests at cinnamon somehow, and orange starburst candies all play quite the prominent role still. The malt has aged enough to pick up a hint of oxidation, but this seems to provide more of an accentuation of the toasted character rather than even be nutty at this point. This still seems quite fresh and vibrant in the nose.

Thick, viscous, somewhat syrupy even, and there is a huge citrus hop character to this beer (tangelo, grapefruit, touches of caramelized kumquat, and Curacao orange zest). There is some, slightly dull, maybe more rounded in character, oxidized caramel malts here that provide a touch of nuttiness and a suggestion of citrus infused sherry. A firm, biting bitterness towards the finish also seems to mix in with a touch of oxidation. As the beer warms up the malt character comes more to the fore; lots of brown sugar, caramel, sweet brown grain notes, a nice toasted whole-grain cracker note. The caramel malt and its slightly nutty / toast oxidation also becomes a bit more prominent as the beer warms up.

This is quite tasty, and for some reason is quite hitting the spot right now. Some oxidation has set in, but that was completely expected and it actually is at a pretty good level for a beer of this age. The oxidation has likely helped to temper the sweetness that was likely quite a bit more prominent when this was young.
