Clear, bright and copper. A few carbonation streams. Rocky head at first, drops to a cap and spotty sticky lacing. Nicely done.
Smells like a pretty standard Samuel Adams hop profile. Spicy and piney. That is to say, present, but far from assertive. Rye dwarfs any other malty notes.
Nicely balanced flavors of spicy bready malt and moderately bittering hops. The malt is on the pale side. Without the rye this would lean closer to an English pale ale than to an American amber. Of course the continental hop profile affects that perception, even though it's on the lighter side. Spicy rye blends well with the hops, which also have piney and grassy notes. The malt mostly stays out of the way and allows the rye to be the featured flavor.
Medium body. I wouldn't have minded a little bit more heft, but this isn't supposed to be a huge ale. That said, it's not deficient, and the carbonation is about right.
Despite the fact that this beer was executed well and was a fine addition to the variety pack, I am guessing it will be ultimately forgettable. Definitely not a problem to drink though. Solid, but not spectacular. Benefits from being in an uncrowded style. Maybe I was generous in this score since I can't think of any true comparables.

A: Pours an opaque copper color, with a white head.
S: Spicy rye, bready malt, a subdued floral and piney hop character in the nose.
T: More spicy rye, some wheat, some bready malt, hop flavor is still piney, floral and subdued.
M: Medium bodied, a bit harsh.
O: Recommended if you want a rye beer that doesn't have a strong hop character to it. This beer really focuses on the rye and other malts. That said, I enjoyed it.
