12oz brown bottle with a freshness date.

Reddish brown, a bit hazy with a creamy tiny bubbled head on top. Hint of spicy bready rye with cooked oranges in the nose. Very smooth and creamy, that trademark oily feeling and slick thicker body is there as with most beers from Boston Beer Co. Oily hop, faint alcoholic esters, sweet maltiness with a spicy kick from the rye and hops. Orangey herbal hop flavor is pretty substantial but the toasted grain and rye are still able to break through.

A decent Rye Beer but it has all of the same Samuel Adams bells and whistles which just does not make it original at all ... just a few dials of flavor moved around. (658 characters)

Poured into pint glass.

Pours 1/2 finger of khaki head. Color is a copper amber.

Aroma: Smells like an imperial red that has lost its hops. Very creamy and malty. Yuck. It has a slight rye flavor, but all bread, biscuit, and caramel malts.

Taste: Wow, this beer had better not win. It has more rye and spice in the taste, but then it is all malts. Caramel and biscuit flavors. Again, it tastes like an imperial red that is old and lost its hops.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a medium amount of carbonation. It is dry and spiced. Ends fairly clean, but dry.

Overall, normally I can drink a bottle of Sams and be alright. This one just isn't drinkable at all. There is nothing that works with this beer. Please don't vote for this beer. (740 characters)

Bottle. Courtesy of aparris85. Pours a clear rust colored mahagony color with a slightly tan head that slowly settles. Malty, bready, with some spice aroma. Not really too much hops in the nose, if any, there is a touch of fruit like hops. Medium mouthfeel. The taste is rather ho-hum. Starts of with some mild sweetness and biscuit like qualities that then transitions to a dry like finish with just a touch of hop bitterness. Yeah, I hope they don't make Sample B. Minimal lace. No real alcohol notes. (503 characters)

Pours a hazy, deep amber to copper with a light tan head. In the aroma, sweet rye maltiness and light fruitiness. In the taste, dry rye and a small hint of fruit. A small bite and medium to light bodied mouthfeel, with a dry rye malt maltiness. A nice rye ale, nice body and flavor. A bigger hop presence would be perfect. (322 characters)

Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a pint glass.

The color is a deep red with gold highlights. There is a finger of brownish foamy head ans some nice lacing left on the glass.

The smell is rye at first, makes me think of making a nice sandwich to go along with this beer. There is almost an orange flavor in the background that plays with my nose.

The taste has a nice spicy rush that hits first then leads into a light bitterness and then back to the rye flavor. The taste of rye does not seem as appealing as the smell of rye. This seems to have a little too much. There is a bit of a barely flavor that seems to be missing or is overcome by the rye.

The feel of this beer is medium bodied. It is a beer that is not too bit for an average beer drinker. It goes down well but has a strong aftertaste. This could be better balanced but is an interesting beer. (860 characters)

12 oz bottle poured into a tulip. Medium cherry red color, little to no opacity. Very little lacing with a small ring of head that persists. Aroma is biscuity and slightly rich, more bread aroma than cookie. Flavor is rye and dark crystal malt. Hops are nice but not over the top. Definitely more balanced than the Belgian. Body is in the light department and mouthfeel is on the dry side.

Not my favorite Rye Ale, but my favorite choice between Sample A and B. (499 characters)

This beer poured a dark amber color, with a small head that didnt stay with the beer very long. There wasnt much in the smell. It tasted simialir to any rye ale, but rather harsh, and just not as good. Full flavor, but the harshness made it hard to finsih. Overall not bad, but I voted for the other. (300 characters)

Had this in a small plastic sample glass at the brewery beer garden in Boston.

A-off white head, dark walnut body

S-candy, citrus, ice cream

T-ice cream and floral hops

M-medium

D-really full of flavor. I would drink it again though if given limited choices. (264 characters)

I enjoyed this after the belgian IPA sample A for the Brewer's Choice vote, I asked for a second sample as I used the first to cleanse my palate of the hoppy Belgian IPA sample I tried first.
12 oz chilled pour into a tumbler.

A - A caramel reddish brown color with translucent clarity and light tan cap which has a creamy appearance.

S - The smell has mild yeast yet mostly malt oriented aroma w/ light caramel and bready qualities mixed with a mild pine hop aroma and accented by a slight spice note

M- The feel is nicely balanced between the malt w/ smooth caramel sweetness and mild bitterness and slight spice as indicated in the nose w/ moderate carbonation and light tangy yeast w/ sem-dry finish

T - The flavor is fresh malt w/ nice nutty and slight caramel tinge of rye w/ toasted malt taste dominant and balanced slightly with a hint of pine in the hops. The taste has a lingering yeast tinge which gives a light dried fruit tinge in the finish

D - A not unpleasant offering, but hard to compare with the drinkability of the Belgian Ipa it was paired with. The malt is not muted so it could be nice for fall drinking, I think it represents the style well

A brilliant copper w/ good clarity and thick light beige cap which measures about 3/4 inch and lace clings well in a film. The smell is vegetal like a small case of dms is evident with light cabbage odor up front with slightly tangy scent an mild fruit ester in the yeast w/ hint of hop which gives off a gentle herble aroma and light grain in the nose. The mouthfeel is mild with hop bitterness and light yeast presence w/ a bit of sweetness and moderately carbonated with subtle toast element. feel is semi-dry in the finish w/ light bitterness.

The taste is much like the boston ale with same noble hop profile and yeast flavor w/ slight elelent of toasted rye grain in the malt and light herbal hop quality. there is a mild vegetal tinge from the hops w/ light tang from the house S.A. yeast. A mild grainy note w/ a pretty good overall balance from hops/malt in the finish which is relatively clean. This was a good beer, not a great one. I enjoyed it for what it is a pretty drinkable ale. I would probably drink this if available, but not go out of my way for it, not my first choice in the challenge between it and the Belgian IPA, but it is ok for the style. (2,416 characters)

A - Pours a deep amber copper color, clear, mild carbonation, and a huge three fingered bollowing, rocky white head. Foam gradually subsides after several minutes to form a thin, white, creamy head.

S - Has an acidic, caramel, spicy rye aroma. Judging by the nose, the malt smells like it may have a little zing to it.

T - Spicy malt, some rye, some caramel malt with extra mild hopping.

M - Dry up front, watery finish on the back end, thin and light body. Finishes fairly clean.

D - Wouldn't buy it. Definitely not digging this beer. Of the two samples, the Belgian IPA is definitely better by a small margin. (615 characters)

I test-drove this at Brew Fest in Des Moines over the weekend (thanks for the keychain). I picked this one because the belgian seemed a bit weak for the style and was slightly less flavorful. It did have the rye taste to it but it seemed much more likeable that other ryes I've had. The body was good with a bit of a bunch when it hit the taste buds. It went down with a bit fo a sting but was enjoyable. It was good to place this booth near the entrance so I didn't have many other beers lingering on my tongue. (512 characters)

Sampled this one at Sam's Quick Shop alongside Sample A. Poured a crisp copper orange with barely any head. Aroma was sweet malts, spicy rye and a trace of hops. The taste is not much more than a standard Amber Ale with just a slight kick of rye, some caramel malts, slight rye spice and mild hops. The beer is crisp and smooth with decent carbonation. I have always been a fan of rye beers, but this one proved to be nothing special at all, it didn't come close to its Belgian IPA competition. (494 characters)

Tasted like a normal rye ale. Had the spicy zing associated with the malt. This one was spicy with a malty backbone. It also had a highly noticeable presence of citrus which seemed stand offish and out of place. It had a nice mild bitter finish which was appropriate and appreciated.

Had this one on tap as part of the tour/tasting at the Boston R&D location on March 26, 2009.

G: Poured into one of the Samuel Adams tasting glasses--Step 2.

A: A dark amber with hints of light brown. A decent, light head on the pour, although it was a taster glass, so hard to assess.

S: A little bit of rye, and some hops. Definitely not as hoppy as all of the other rye beers that I have tried, although I'm not sure it was intended to be.

T: Again, there were some hops, but not like what is often typical of this style. The hops were mild, which wasn't a problem, but the malt base was not terribly great. Very little rye flavor came through, and it tasted almost more like a creamy amber. Overall, not the kind of complexity I normally expect from a rye beer.

M: Creamy with a medium body and a good amount of carbonation. Little alcohol presence.

D: The mouthfeel would portend to great drinkable, but I just wasn't really feeling the taste. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't terribly great either. (1,019 characters)
