Twelve ounce glass poured into Sam Adams pint. Freshness date of best before October clearly marked.
I was very surprised when I poured this brew, as the first thing that stood out was how clear it is. It literally looks just like a typical pale lager. Head retention is pretty good, little lacing is being left on the glass.
Based on the BJCP guidelines for this style, it hits most of the marks, but definitely has that Sam Adams level of refinement in the taste, especially in the finish. The ester flavors are there, but a nice snap of clean, pilsener like crispness finishes this brew off. It almost tastes like a pale ale with just slightly more phenolic notes. Esters give off a slight banana, lemon tartness. Surprisingly, the ester like flavors seem to not be as present from sip to sip, and the pale ale like character seems to come out even more. Nice malt backbone keeps everything in check.
I haven't tried many Saisons, but I am willing to bet this is probably in the top three for the cleanest take on the style. This is certainly not a bad thing, as this a very refreshing beer, perfect for a hot summer day. At 4.35% ABV, drink away.
