12 oz bottle from the 2011 Summer Seasonal pack poured into a tulip.
Look: clear, golden body with huge carbonation bubbles racing to the top where a thick, foamy head forms, dwindles down to a thin layer of foam, and remains until the beer is finished. Surprisingly, very clear for a saison. There's good lacing but the lacing disappears after a little while.
Smell: a little fruitiness, lemon zest, and Belgian esters reminiscent of saison yeast. Smells good.
Taste: fairly flavorful, with a bit of breadiness, lemon and tropical fruit, some grain, and a light barnyard flavor coming from the yeast. Its good but nothing extraordinary.
Feel: heavily carbonated at first, eventually ending up a bit flat, crisp, medium to light in body, and dry. Easy drinking and could be a session beer given how light it is in terms of alcohol.
Overall: decent, but with so many great saisons out there, this one falls a little short. I think it will be a nice introduction to saison for new drinkers, but for someone like me who loves the style, its disappointing. The light alcohol does appeal to me, since it pays homage to the table saisons they had back in the day, but the restrained nature of the yeast puts a damper on things. I would give it a try if it falls into your lap but I wouldn't seek it out. Cheers!
