This week's cheap $6.99 growler fill of the week at Bellport Beer in Bellport, NY. Being the enthused Saison fan that I am, combined with the fact that I credit Sam Adams for being one of the beers that brought me into the craft scene, I jumped on it.
Into a traditional pint glass, the beer appears a transparent light golden yellow with a finger or so of chunky white head. Decent lacing as the head fizzles down to practically nothing but a flimsy film.
Nose is full of strong and phenolic yeast aromas for the most part. Slight lemon citrus notes, some wheat, and a barely noticeable hop presence are also there, but just not well defined. Definitely smells like a Saison, just not a particularly pungent and well balanced one.
Taste is medicinal and grassy up front with a slight hop bitterness throughout. Lemon and apple tartness take a more prominent role to match the yeast mustiness. A little watery, but not bad.
Light to medium bodied and with very easy drinking and refreshing qualities. Crisp with a dry finish; good session beer, especially for summer, although a bit boring and muted for the style.
Overall, a valiant crack at the style. However, given that there are much much better options available for only a bit more bank, this one will not be a regular for me. Still glad I tried it though.
