A - Near black in color and near opaque with mahogany edges if held to the light. A creamy tan head has very good retention.
S- Even with hops in the name, I was surprised by the strong hop aroma in this black beer. Both citrus and pine hops dominate with a nearly hidden roasted malt aroma in the background.
T- Moderately bitter; less so han might be expected given the hoppy aroma. Muted roasted malt flavor. Great hoppy finish.
M- Crisp with medium body. Slightly dry finish.
O- Full West coast hop flavor in a very drinkable brew. 7% ABV largely hidden. Rating approaches 4.5 Blackened Hops is the best of the three 2011 Sam Adams Longshot releases I've tried.

Deep brown pour, 1/2" head, light brown. the hopping was somewhat hidden, as you continually keep sniffing, you start to make out a tree like hop nose that is very faint.
More woodiness, bitter, not overly acrid, somewhat dry finish, roast never jumps into this, it has a deep dark color, but the roast stays off the tongue. I guess this is a black ipa. It really tastes what I would expect from SA in a black ipa, so I'll call it that.

Look: Dark brown with a soapy off white head. Leaves plenty of lace and looks like a solid dark beer overall.
Smell: roasted, nutty malts, coffee, chocolate and a whiff of herbal hops.
Taste: Dark malt body, but still quite hoppy with herbal and earthy notes, a bit woodsy and taste faintly of citrus. Roasted malts, fairly bitter still. Has some mild coffee like flavor but mostly a one-two punch of roast and hops.
Feel: Full bodied, well carbonated. Finishes clean and balanced.
Overall: Solid black ipa. A two trick pony of malt and hops. Not insanely complex but good for what it is. The hops have held up well over time. This is still drinking like it was fresh.
