Blackened Hops pours a dark chocolate fudge color. It’s not opaque. Faint burgundy highlights are noted with backlighting. A light tan head caps it. It’s about a finger and a half tall, and falls back to a surface covering quickly. Lacing was quite sticky and moderate in volume.
The nose lacks punch, but smells pretty good nonetheless. Hops are most notable initially. They’re citric and a tad piney. Citrus grapefruit and pineapple are the strongest fruit scents. Dark malts are easily noted. Roasted malts and bittersweet dark chocolate are definitely in the mix. A bit of roasted coffee is there. It’s secondary, but plays that role well. Alcohol is buried.
The flavor is easily a notch above the nose. Dark malt flavors kick things off. Bittersweet dark chocolate and roasted malts provide a really solid base. Roasted coffee follows. It’s a little stronger in flavor, but complements the malt flavors well. The hop profile has a nice flavor, but takes a back seat to the malts. They feature piney notes primarily, and a little citrus grapefruit, orange, and pineapple. There’s a little bitterness, but it’s not a palate wrecker. Alcohol is blended very well. Finishes citrusy and roasty.
Blackened Hops has a medium body, and a nice, smooth feel. Carbonation is mid-range, but the bubbles feel light. Goes down smooth and easy. I’m enjoying the bottle, and wouldn’t mind another at all.
Blackened Hops is easily the gem in this year’s Sam Adams Longshot release. I honestly wasn’t all that excited to see another Black IPA or American Black Ale (whatever suits you), but this is definitely a good one. They may be trendy, but that doesn’t mean that some aren’t very good. Blackened Hops is definitely a little more malt centered, if you will. I wouldn’t mind a little stronger hop presence. But, it’s certainly good beer.

Deep brown pour, 1/2" head, light brown. the hopping was somewhat hidden, as you continually keep sniffing, you start to make out a tree like hop nose that is very faint.
More woodiness, bitter, not overly acrid, somewhat dry finish, roast never jumps into this, it has a deep dark color, but the roast stays off the tongue. I guess this is a black ipa. It really tastes what I would expect from SA in a black ipa, so I'll call it that.

Look: Dark brown with a soapy off white head. Leaves plenty of lace and looks like a solid dark beer overall.
Smell: roasted, nutty malts, coffee, chocolate and a whiff of herbal hops.
Taste: Dark malt body, but still quite hoppy with herbal and earthy notes, a bit woodsy and taste faintly of citrus. Roasted malts, fairly bitter still. Has some mild coffee like flavor but mostly a one-two punch of roast and hops.
Feel: Full bodied, well carbonated. Finishes clean and balanced.
Overall: Solid black ipa. A two trick pony of malt and hops. Not insanely complex but good for what it is. The hops have held up well over time. This is still drinking like it was fresh.
