Poured from the bottle into my Chimay goblet
A-pours a dark orange with a vaguely off-white head with decent lacing.
S-I love the smell of this beer. There is a sweetness, a citrusy hops, and some coriander. There's a twinge of wit beer scent.
T- Meh. I'm not as happy with the taste as I am with the smell. The hops isn't as present as the nose leads you to believe, although there's a bitterness at the back of it. There's a candy, sugary taste that is almost overwhelming, especially as the beer warms. Spice was barely there.
MF- Nothing to write home about, but not displeasing at all.
Overall, I'm generally a fan of friar-based brews, and I was looking forward to a hoppy version, but this doesn't deliver quite like I thought. But it's not a bad beer, just not my favorite.

The date on the beer was September 2011, so I'm a bit past the date, but it somehow got shoved in the back of the fridge and I figured it was worth a shot. Poured into a tulip glass and was pleasantly surprised how fresh it still seemed.
Aroma is not too strong, with a slight slight fruitiness. Definite Belgianness comes through.
Appearance is a dark gold with an off-white, fairly thin head.
Taste is surprisingly good, and I'm usually not into Belgians overall, and specifically not Belgian IPA's. Nice use of spice and hops to gain some balance, while retaining the overall style.
Mouthfeel is well-carbonated, but perhaps a little light.
Overall, I was surprised how much I enjoyed this beer, and imagine it may have been even better last summer.
