Pours a dark brown color with ruby edges and a finger of tan head that dissipated almost immediately. The nose is reminiscent of Cherry Coke. The taste is dominated by maraschino cherries. There is only a faint hint of chocolate and no true bock qualities to this offering.
The body is too light for the style. The finish tastes fake and medicine-like.
In the Spring of 2011, I had this offering on-tap and enjoyed it thoroughly. I thought that it had definite bock qualities, a heartier body and a flavor profile that was far more balanced than the version available in the 2013 SA Winter mix case.
I certainly hope that SA either goes back to the basic Chocolate Bock for the 2014 version or pulls out the old recipe for another attempt at the Chocolate Cherry Bock.
