Picked of the Latitude 48 Deconstructed 12 because they admittedly snagged me with the concept. Such a sucker. Anyway, worked my way through 1, 2, and 3 and got to Simcoe tonight. They were slowly getting better so I actually have a little expectation. Good looking beer, a little dark with a strong head that sticks around and grabs the glass. Smell was very disappointing. The taste followed through on the disappointment. Not the flavor bang that I like and to much of the bitter which I don't. Although it admittedly faded as I worked through the beer. But not balanced enough for me. A step back for me in the series.

Appearance: Pours with a finger and a half of head which settled slightly but was very present while drinking. Dark, almost burnt orange color. Sticky lacing left behind at each level. Active carbonation was bright, a touch above average for the style.

Smell: Heavier saturated citrus with biscuity malts on the front. Some lighter tropical fruits that I associate with Simcoe pop up on the body. The finish is some bold pine and medium bodied fruits with accents of oranges, pineapple, and grapefruit.

Taste: Biscuit and caramel malts warm up the palate which parlays into some still prevalent Simcoe hop profile. Lingering citrus with some lighter tones of pineapple, mangos, and kiwis show up on the body. The finish is some pine and caramel malts.

Mouthfeel: Balanced hop bitterness with brighter fruit tones. Solid malt backbone. Carbonation fits.

Overall: I know I am a little late to the party with these, I'm sure fresher this would have even been a better beer. Will get one of these fresher next year and revisit, but regardless, this was still very solid.

Bottle dated best by October and drinking in July. Should be considered fairly fresh.

Appearance is very nice with excellent retention and lacing. Smell is very piney. Taste is quite pleasant for an IPA. Slight fruitiness, piney, floral and well balance malt to support.

Overall I'm finding that ole Jimmy K. is finally starting to make some decent IPAs. This Simcoe is a respectable IPA and I enjoyed it.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a DFH IPA glass.

A: Golden clear, with a fine white head and gentle effervescence.

S: Too sweet for Simcoe; these single-hop Latitudes need more hops! Hint of lemon.

T/M: Pretty good! Nicely balanced between a classic American-hop pine-ctirus and sweet-sticky caramel malts. At least this is noticeably an IPA. Enjoyable, but not exceptional. Smooth, sweet finish with nary a hint of pine or astringency.

O: Very nice. Good beer, even on its own.

The first two deconstructeds I've poured tonight had no head, but this orange-amber beer develops a medium one, so marking up the appearance. Aroma is better than the hallertau--it has that pine-resin aroma we've encountered a lot in recent IPAs. Taste has plenty of bitterness, and piney hop flavor. Malt adds a sweet component that is well-balanced. Finish is dry. About equal to the main Latitude I think. Very drinkable, but doesn't stand out.
