[Original rating 2011-06-17] This is my favorite of the single hop descontructed Latitude 48 IPAs. Aroma is faint like the others, with a bit of flowers and citrus. Taste is very well balanced, with solid malt and flowery hops. I really like this one... But then I don’t recall meeting a Simcoe that I didn’t like.

Nice orange color, ample clarity, about 3/4" white head. Aroma was good, but in enough restraint to hit the SA demo.

Ample bitterness, still imparts flavor, more bitter grapefruit than other citrus or tree like flavors. Just enough pale and crystal malt to bring a tad of heft and balance to it. Definitely one of the more serviceable ipa's SA has ever made and one of the best of the single hop series.

11/26....pours medium dark amber with white foam. Settles out completely. There is a grapefruit bready toffee nose. Some pine. Soft malt. Grassy, oily. Pretty good.

Beer poured from a bottle into a pint glass. Pours orange with a small white head. Smells of floral hops but not overly strong. Tastes of floral and earthy hops. Beer is light bodied, slightly heavily carbonated. Overall, an above average beer.

"This single hop IPA is brewed using only Simcoe hops that bring a distinct punch of grapefruit character & piney notes. The subtle malt sweetness helps balance and round out the concentrated hop character." Brewed in the style of an American IPA with Simcoe Hops added. Available as part of the Latitude 48 IPA Deconstructed pack, available in 12 oz. bottles.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle to a Samuel Adams Sensory Pint glass. Served above 57 degrees Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a frothy foam head of a biscuity caramel white complexion over a mildly hazy maple amber body with plentiful flecked sediment in tow. Retention is very good and lacing is light and spotty. 4

(Smell) The Simcoe hop generates aromas of juicy tropical fruit, pithy grapefruit and piney resins. The malt aroma is a simple pairing of caramel grain and biscuit malt with a moderate syrupy sweetness. Potency is medium. 3.75

(Taste) The flavor generates a hop flavor that is more juicy fruits and clean, very lightly acidic grapefruit than the aroma suggests. Notes of resin and pine generate most boldly on the finish contributing to a moderate but punctuated bitterness. The malt profile pales in comparison to the hop profile, despite its limitations in flavor over the hop aroma. 3.5

(Mouthfeel) The texture is slick, mildly oily, lightly chewy, medium dry. Carbonation is modest, generating a moderate frothiness and a light crispness. Body is medium for the style, medium overall. Alcohol presence is light and there are no off characters. 3.5

(Overall) A highly popular hop which generates a considerable amount of hop flavor by itself but drops off quickly with time. Because of these qualities, I consider this the most fragile hop ingredient of the ones I have yet reviewed. Potentially one of the most enjoyable angles of the hop profile of Latitude 48 but also one of the murkiest with a bit of age on it. It goes to show that Simcoe hop-brewed IPAs need to be enjoyed as fresh as possible, as even by themselves they are generally unable to carry the show alone. 3.5

A: This poured a clear copper with some off white head.
S: It smelled like copper and earthy floral hops, with some bready malt.
T: It tasted like copper and earthy floral hops, with some bready malt. It had a somewhat clean bitter aftertaste.
M: It was somewhat thick with moderate carbonation. Decent body.
D: This wasn't a very good IPA, with muted scent and taste. Disappointing since I know this hop is capable of better brews. The body was a little weak also, and the finish wasn't great. So not the easiest to drink or enjoy. Pass on this one.
