Pours dark, ruby brown with an off-white head. Whiff of smoke and malt.
Subtle hints of smoke, chocolate, a touch of coffee, and roasted malts. Medium-light to medium bodied and carbonation might be a bit much for the style. A bit tart on the palate and the finish does leave a small hint of the smoke note; nothing like a scotch or a heavier smoked beer, though. Smoke is not as forward as I'd prefer. I was briefly under the impression that this was their Black Lager with a touch of smoke added -- not a bad idea, but not something to make your heart race. Relatively easy to drink and maybe would be good for someone's first smoked ale.
Nice with grilled strip steak and homemade steak sauce -- something to bring out the smoke!
