Pours into a tulip glass a deep chocolate brown with ruby highlights,a creamy one finger light tan colored head atop.Aromas were a little light with some roast, molasses and fruity yeast esters.A little sharper than expected in the mouth,a lighter feel for the style.Not as roasted on the palate as the nose suggests,black licorice is big along with dark fruit and more yeasty fruitiness.Not bad but not worth the price tag in my opinion,still it's nice to see the Barrel Room Collection here in NC now.

Pours a deep brown, dark ruby color with a tan head that fades pretty quickly and doesn't really leave any noticeable lacing. Nose hits very heavy with a cornucopia of fruity and earthy esters, the heaviest and most apparent being apples and grapes. Very, very sweet and malty aroma. The taste comes up and follows right along with the nose - fruity and actually slightly tart on the tongue, full of apple skins, grapes, and raisins. Sweet toffee and slight caramel shine through near the tail end of the beer. It finishes with a slight oak/woodgrain flavor and a touch of alcohol warmth. Bitterness is low and I really didn't notice any kind of florals or hops in this one at all. Medium-thick body, slightly sticky, low carbonation.
Pretty impressive outing from Sam Adams. This beer may look intimidating, but it was actually quite sweet on the tongue and the alcohol was hidden aside from the typical warming sensation it provided.

The thirteenth hour is the witching hour and refers to the mysterious combination of flavors in this brew. They've combined the roasted chocolate and coffee flavors of a stout with the spicy character of a Belgian ale aged in oak.
The combination of 7 different malts creates a black brew that's full bodied and smooth with rich notes of coffee, chocolate, and dark fruits like raisins and plums. The dark roasty, and slightly sweet flavors of a stout are blended with the unique, spicy and sour character of our Kosmic Mother Funk (KMF), an ale that's been aged in oak tuns for up to a year. The KMF gives the beer an added complexity with notes of black pepper, oak, vanilla, and a hint of acidity.
Recommended pouring is gently into a traditional glass. Take care not to unsettle the fine layer of yeast that rests at the bottom from the bottle-conditioning.
It's alright but I prefer their every day Imperial Stout to this one. It has better body and is less fruity.

From the bottle into my tulip glass. The beer was black with a little red around the edges. It had a small tan head.
Very aromatic. Chocolate/coffee/roasted malt. Vanilla. Dark fruit. A little peppery feel in my nose.
Not quite as tasty as I thought it would be. Dark chocolate and espresso at first, oak/vanilla. A hint of raisin.
Medium-bodied, maybe a little on the thin side. Still pretty enjoyable.

Grabbed a bottle a few months back at Wegman's. Reasonably priced at $10.99 or so.
Pours like a coca cola, dark brown with some fizzy head with no spotty lacing.
Aroma is decent. Dark figs, brown sugar, sweet malt, and sadly, grapes.
Taste is where this one goes down hill for me personally. It's not a bad beer at all, but chocolate....? Nope. Coffee? Negatory. Oak? Not finding it.
Description is very misleading.
Fairly high carbonation, but not distracting....just a bit higher than I would have appreciated.
Finishes fairly clean.
Not a bad beer, but falls short based on my expectations after reading the label.

Appearance: 1 inch head, reddish-brown in color, clear, high carbonation
Smell: chocolate, raisin, fig, dark bread, and dark fruit
Taste: black cherry, dark fruits, alcohol, dark bread, and slight coffee at the end
Mouthfeel: medium-high carbonation, medium-heavy body, sweet with alcohol burn
Overall: Why did it take me so long to try this? One of Sam Adams better beers in this series despite not really having a lot of oaking. This tastes like a complex quad. A sipper I will get again.

Poured from bottle into a Sam Adams glass.
Appearance: Very dark, almost no light could be seen through the glass. Brown foamy head with spotty lacing on the glass.
Smell: Smell of roasted/taosted malts, carmels, coffee, chocolate, and maybe some fruit as well, alcohol is present.
Mouthfeel/Taste: Thick, medium to full bodied. Taste has malts up front that give way to carmel, coffe, chocolate, and fruity flavors, leaves a bittersweet taste behind.
Overall: Not a huge fan of stouts personally, but I will give credit were due, it is a very well crafted beer, I did enjoy the whole bottle, but probably won't buy again, just cause as I said before, these darker heavier stouts and ales are not my style.

Thirteenth Hour opens with a dark, spicy, fruity, complex aroma, featuring Belgian-like bananas and cloves, chocolate, vanilla, fig, Candi sugar, berries, and raisin wine. The combination makes this one of the more unique aromas in the beer world, and in fact makes this smell almost, but not entirely, quite unlike beer. Instead, it comes across more like a fine aged bottle of sherry or cognac, sat next to a steaming cup of spiced berry tea and a wedge of chocolate. The effect is intriguing, if not intoxicating, but is definitely finely nuanced and evidence of a well-crafted brew.
On the tongue, the beer opens with a Flemish-like bout of sourness, quickly joined by a blast of citrus-bright lemon-lime hops. Some vanillas and touches of oak lie beneath, as well as a continuation of the banana and clove flavors from the nose. Small chocolate and fig juice notes drift lazily about, and the whole flavor profile is overhung by a vodka-like alcohol whang. Late in the mouthful the hops add extra levels of lemon and citrus, and the aftertaste is dominated both by these and by a fresh wheat stalk grain flavor, and lasts for a long time. Mouthfeel is a strangely watery medium-light to medium, and carbonation is medium to medium-high.
Overall, the beer is oddly non-stout-like for a stout, having few strong coffee, ash, tobacco, or chocolate/black malt notes. Instead, it comes across as a slightly spiced and lightly soured Belgian, into which just a touch of coffee and chocolate malt had been added. Perhaps if this had been labelled as such, it would have been less strange on the tongue--but the stout label threw me off greatly, as did the watery mouthfeel.

Black in glass with only a touch of brown at the edges in bright light, but a thin layer is a deep reddish brown. The head is well proportioned, creamy dark tan in color, and has excellent retention with decent lacing.
Aroma: complex, fruity and spicy with some sweet malt evident too. Lots of raisins.
The rich and complex flavor reflects some toasted malts with coffee and a variety of spices. Hints of dark fruits and chocolate.
Full body with ample soft carbonation. Near perfect!
O: This cross-over ale serves as an excellent American version of a Belgian dark strong ale. Good even by that high standard although much of the spiciness comes from spices rather than the yeast.
