Classified as a Stout from the brewery, but Belgian Strong Dark Ale on BA. Reviewed as a Stout.

(A) Pours black, but it's not opaque. When held up to the light, ruby hues are seen throughout the beer. There is a slight head that diminishes rather quickly.

(S) Very sweet, well spiced. Has a bouquet of dark fruits and sugars. Dark cherry and yeast. Almost has a sour stout smell to it like NB Clutch or Tart of Darkness. Has a lot and very promising.

(T) Promising gone. What is this? The dark fruits, especially dark cherry, are very prominent. The fruits are paired with a bit of raisin and a hefty bout of spice.

(M) Medium body and rather oily. It's too carbonated, especially for a stout. Ends thin and dry.

(O) Not what I would have expected out of a stout. This beer is over spiced and over carbonated. I liked the idea and the aroma was very pleasant, quite awesome if I do say, but it was all downhill from there.

A - poured a pitch black, when held to light barely any got through displaying a deep murky mahogany and ruby, two finger thick head dissipated to a fine bubbled froth. No lacing.

S - aroma is riddled with bourbon and whiskey, slight sour, alcohol, lots of chocolate, and tons of fruity sweetness. A little hot on the nose.

T - Ridiculously deep and complex flavor, the flavors meld well to sort of homogeneous note. In this amalgam is tons of dark roasted malt, chocolate, bourbon, vanilla, nice sweet toffee, lots of peppery fruity yeast Esthers, and a ton of bitterness, ends dry, almost tannic.

M - ample carb for the style, body is a little watery, dry and a little hot.

O - the taste is great, for SA I was actually surprised they could put something out this good. Is a little rough around the edges, a little too hot for 9% and somewhat tannic/astringent. Looks great though and aroma was so enticing albeit a little boozy, ill drink it again.

Poured from a large bomber into a tasting glass.

A - A 4oz pour yields about 1 finger of offwhite head. Lacing is minimal. Color: Very dark amber.

S - Smells like a strong dark ale. Don't get much of the coffee or stout listed on the label.

T - Tasty but average. I was hoping to get a more coffee and stout flavors.

M - Excellent for the style.

O - Yummy but underwhelming.

Thirteenth Hour pours an almost black color with a nice long lasting lacing head. There is a very sweet aroma; lots of date notes, some oak. The taste has big oak flavors, big sweet spices, lots of dry fruits. Very complex, but nice body, a little watery. Overall lots of stuff going on here, some nice flavors, and good to sip.

Poured from a big-ass bottle (oddly shaped, bomber-sized) into my snifter glass. Deep, opaque brown with tinges of deep red around the base when held to the light. 1/2 finger of tan head which quickly faded. Aromas of oak and molasses. The flavors were very reminiscent of a trippel with hints of molasses, banana, some dark fruit (raisins?), some alcohol (expected at 9%). This had a rich mouthfeel, but again, not what I was expecting for a stout. Overall, this drank like a trippel, albeit a dark appearing trippel... not quite sure what SA's definition of a 'Belgian' stout is, but be aware that this did not drink like a stout. However, it was a pretty nicely balanced beer overall, which improved as the glass warmed.

Poured from bottle into a chalice glass

Appearance – The beer pours a dark brown, nearly black color with a one finger head of a thick creamy head of an off white color. The head very slowly fades leaving a fantastic level of thick and foamy lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma of the beer is big of a yeasty and banana smell mixed with lots of darker fruit aromas of raisin, plum and fig. Along with these smells comes other more Belgian spice smells with strong notes of clove and coriander and a bit of pepper. A sugary sweet bubblegum aroma and a bit of candied sugar mix with the fruit to create an overall very sweet smell. This sweet however is overall balanced by the presence of some lighter dark chocolate and roasted malt aromas which with the sweet produces a very inviting smell.

Taste – The taste begins with a somewhat sour dark fruit flavor as there is a rather strong presence of cherry, raisin, fig and a lemon like taste. Right up front there is also some flavors of a roasted malt and light chocolate nature, which begin stronger, but end up fading more and more as the taste advances. While the roasted and chocolate fade, some yeasty and spice flavors come to the tongue along with more and more sour lemon flavors joining along. While quite weak more toward the middle, the roasted flavors make a resurgence at the end of the taste, bringing along with them some hay and grassy hop flavors. These flavors balance some of the more sour flavors nicely and with some flavors of a light candied sugar and some warming boozy rum flavors coming to the tongue at the end, a mildly bittered and somewhat sour dark fruity and lightly boozy Belgian flavor is left to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on somewhat thin for a brew of 9 % abv, but not too far off for a Belgian strong dark, while the carbonation level is on the slightly higher side. The feel is rather nice as it mellows the sour a bit with the thinner body and higher carbonation all while still allowing the other more mild dark fruit and malt flavors, as well as the yeast and spice, to come through.

Overall – While listed as an Imperial Stout, I would definitely not classify it as that, but instead as a Belgian strong dark ale. It is fruitier and less roasty with a whole mess of Belgian yeast flavors. Overall it is alright, but really does not outshine other beers of a comparable style and price.

Color - deep, near black plum. Full head.

Aroma- complicated aroma including mild floral notes, spices, raisin, and hint of roastiness.

Taste- Initial thoughts with a new bottle in January 2014: Starts very sweet with prune notes, hints of spice in the mid-body, finishing calmer with a nice lingering aftertaste (perhaps a hint of the barrel aging comes through here). A bit like a fruitcake in a bottle with a hint of sourness throughout. Quirky but we like it. Drink at the recommended temperature- 50 degrees.

After aging 6 months (not cellar, rather aged at room temp)- Sweetness diminished somewhat, starting rich and roasty with coffee and fruity hints of pear and raisin, very faint hints of spice including white pepper in the middle, finishing roasted and mildly smokey with a lingering tart fruity aftertaste that is probably a combo of Belgian yeast and fruity hops.

Rating reflects the improvement with aging.

Poured from a corked 750 ml bottle into a Liefmans Goudenband glass (my preferred all purpose beer tasting glass). Purchased at Costco as part of a three bottle combo pack early January 2014.
