Poured from the 1 pint, 9.4 ounce barrel shaped corked and caged bottle that I bought as a part of the Barrel Room Collection pack at Sam’s Club a few months ago into a clean, clear glass. No “best by” date observed by me on the bottle. The Barrel Room Collection has three such bottles in it. Look for my review of one other to follow.
Note: It was somewhat difficult to get the cork out of this bottle. I believe each bottle in the Collection came out to be something close to $8.64 or so.

A Light brown head over a dark body but it glows a deep mahogany red in front of direct light. Fair look for the style. 3.0

S Dark fruits and spices dance on top of dark roast malt. I do not pick up much of the oak mentioned on the label in the smell. Perhaps it will be in the taste. really somewhat standard smell for the style. 3.0

T Rather thin tasting beer for the style. Sweet malt, dark fruits with less of the "spice" that I smelled and a bit more of the softening Oak mentioned on the label. This taste is rather pedestrian too, along with look and smell. Maybe I have been spoiled in the past by so many great Belgian Strong Dark Ales? 3.0

M Thin, as mentioned above, for the style. When I think of Gulden Draak, Rochefort 8 and others whose feel is exemplary, this falls short. 2.0

D/O Drinkability is not high. I will probably only have one pint out of this bottle which is nearly two pints. Overall this is a disappointment. 2.5

I usually like stouts and dark ales so I was quite excited to try this one.

The beer pours beautifully dark, but is also surprisingly translucent with an amber hue.

The first sip reveals a chocolate and oak favor. This beer lacks in smokiness that so many other stouts have. Instead, there is more of a spicy note with a definite alcohol aftertaste. After drinking for a bit, there's a hint of sweetness to this beer that's hard to place.

The body and feel is probably the most disappointing part. I want a stout that's thick and coats generously. This beer felt thin, but at least that makes it an easy drink.

Overall, I don't think there is any reason to specifically seek this beer out, but it's not a bad find from my trip to the Sam Adams Brewery.

Nice dark looking beer with maybe a half-inch head of small bubbles. Head seems to last a decent amount of time and leave a nice bit of lacing. Overall a very nice looking beer.

Smell isn't too significant. I can pick up some chocolate and the alcohol is obvious. Reminds me a lot of wine.

The best way I can describe the taste is that it is very much like a wine with a little chocolate. Quite sweet. The taste of alcohol comes through quite strong. It's nice but I feel any of the more subtle flavors are completely overpowered.

This beer has a pretty carbonated feel to it though I wouldn't place it on the level of a soda. I almost want to call it light and slightly oily - it seems to linger in your mouth for a while after swallowing.

Found this to be quite disappointing. I really wish more flavors came through. It had a strong taste of alcohol like it which I do like, but overall I just found it a tad less then middling. It wasn't that interesting and I didn't think the combination of chocolate, fruitiness and strong alcohol worked too well.

Pretty good. Tastes like a Flanders red mixed with porter. Fruity, sour ( the good kind ) and a little chocolate aftertaste.

Got this as part of a 3 pack for Christmas so can judge on price. Its OK. It doesn't excel in any category. Its just decent.
Doesn't smell like much, thin mouth feel, taste is OK.
A little chocolate and a little wine flavor..
Given the choices one has at the beer store...I wouldn't buy it for myself.

Had an unpleasant wine-like aftertaste. Bottle was unable to be recalled, which is probably a positive, considering it comes in large bottles.

Beautiful beer. Head made of small bubbles, dark body with hints of ruby. Oak, alcohol and dark fruit in the nose. Cherry and chocolate in the taste. A little thin and a little pricey.

Pours a black color. 1/3 inch head of a tan color. Great retention and great lacing. Smells of oak, spices, alcohol, sweet malt, roasted malt, slight grapes, and a hint of hop. Fits the style of a Belgian Strong Dark Ale. Mouth feel is sharp and crisp, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of sweet malt, spices, slight alcohol, slight roasted malt, slight oak, hint of grape, and slight hops. Overall, good appearance, aroma, complexity, body, and blend.

Dark black in color with no penetration to light. Over an inch thick tightly knit beige head. Notes of molasses and dark candy sugar reveal themselves in the nose. I taste far Belgian candy sugar and sweet dark malt. The mouth is heavily carbonated and creamy.
