Samuel Adams Fat Jack Double Pumpkin Ale has a medium-to-thick creamy, cream-colored head, and a dark, yet clear, rust color, with thick, splotchy lacing down the glass. The aroma is of strong all-spice, cinnamon, and pumpkin, with some underlying sweet smell. The flavor is of all-spice (Jamaica pepper), cinnamon, lots of pumpkin pulp, pie crust, alcohol, and a back bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium to thick, and Samuel Adams Fat Jack finished semi-dry, sweet, cloying, ragged, and almost too rich and sugary to stomach. Overall, this beer is poorly balanced and an obvious gimmick, of which the Samuel Adams line is becoming notorious. This beer might work for those who do not care for beer that tastes like beer. Overall, it’s a bit of a mess. You might want to try it, but I know I’ll never buy it again.

Undated bottle at 45 degrees into standard pint glass
Aroma of spices
Head average (4 cm), light brown, frothy, rapidly diminishing to 2 mm ring
Lacing spotty; few small islands of various sized bubbles
Body dark amber, clear
Flavor begins slightly bitter with spices like a pumpkin pie; ends sweeter with an alcohol taste. No hops, no diacetyl.
Palate medium, oily, lively carbonation.

Not a particularly good beer, probably would taste better very cold. The appearance and aroma are both OK.

Dark chestnut color with a thin, dense head. Smells like cinnamon, nutmeg, graham crackers and molasses. A little smoke?

Doesn't taste as spicy as I feared although 6 months in the cellar may have helped. The pie spice is focused on cinnamon and nutmeg with minimal allspice. Allspice is easily overdone and I liked the restraint here. Malt lacks any actual pumpkin flavor but is a nice blend of graham cracker and brown sugar. Easily the best part of Fat Jack is the thick, smooth big body. It's a hearty mouthfeel, I feel nourished.

Some pumpkin beers are like pumpkin pie, some like pumpkin muffins and some actually taste like pumpkin. Fat Jack tastes like pumpkin bread. One of the better beers from one of my least favorite styles.
