Poured this one into a generic 12oz tasting glass (probably a pilsner of some sort). The brew makes a two finger thick light tan head, and the body is cleanly filtered and is copper in color.

The aroma is pumpkin, vanilla, and maybe a slight hint of cinnamon.

In the taste I'm getting the the spices traditionally found in pumpkin pies, but with an earthy tone.

Full in body, a little slick, and warming in the end.

I expected more from Sam... maybe that's my fault. Disappointing. Not bad, just less than I expected. Try Warlock instead.

Served from a 22 oz. bottle into a tulip.

A: Pours somewhere between a dark amber and a transparent brown. Minimal lacing and small bubbles remain along the edges of glass.

S: Yams, honey and dark fruits crowd the senses. Pleasant and autumnal.

T: Molasses, honey, strawberry preserves. Surprisingly, not much of a pumpkin flavor. A bit too sweet after the second sip.

M: Medium bodied.

O: A pretty good seasonal from Sam Adams. This is a nice alternative to the droves of lighter/smoother pumpkin ales that flood the market around this time of year. A bit too sweet for my tastes, but good in small doses.

22 oz bottle. Pours ruby amber with a medium creamy off white head that goes to a thin film and leaves some lacing.

The aroma is sweet, slightly vegetal, malts with a lot of spicy cinnamon and some ginger.

The flavor is sweet caramel malts with some roast and a little dark fruit. It's followed by a ton of heavy spice - mostly cinnamon with some ginger. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.

Overall, a decent pumpkin beer. It's overly spiced with too much cinnamon. But the base is kind of a winter warmer old ale with some light roast and dark fruit that is kind of cool and plays well with the pumpkin.

Presentation: It was poured from a brown 1 pint 6 oz bottle into a tulip glass. The label lists the abv at 8.5% abv and it also lists the beers ingredients.

Appearance: Fat Jack has a dark garnet red color with good clarity. I can just make out some nice lively carbonation flowing up though the beer. From a slow pour down the middle of the glass I got a nice tight collar of foam. It’s light beige in color and hangs on well. This makes for some cool lacing on the glass.

Smell: The aroma is full of tasty spices and malty goodness. It brings notes of cinnamon and fresh out of the oven ginger bread with a nice boozy kick.

Taste / Palate: There is a lot going on in this full bodied festive beer. The base has a solid gingerbread like maltiness with loads of cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice. It also has notes of vanilla and a very mild bourbon like boozy character. In the middle of all this there is a very mild squash/sweet potatoe like sweetness. The finish brings some light herbal hop bitterness and dryness which blends with the dry spice within. The dry spice lingers and begs you to take another sip.

Pours dark mahogony amber, medium tan head, that is minor in size and staying power. Leaves a thin collar and just some minimal bits of lacing.

Powdered sugar nose, with some caramel and slight fall spices in the background.

Sugary sweet offering from Sam...dark sugar, caramel, sweet malts are what I get on the palate, with some fall/pumpkin pie spices present, but in the background.

Ehh, I've been warming to the style in general this fall, but this "2X" pumkin brew, really is not doing much to impress me...just too sweet and not enough spice...

Appearance: 1/3 inch head, dark brownish-orange in color, clear, high carbonation

Smell: caramel, big clove, and pumpkin spice

Taste: deep sweet caramel, clove, cinnamon, and rich pumpkin spice

Mouthfeel: sweet with slight bitterness, moderate carbonation, heavy bodied

Overall: This is what I expect from an imperial pumpkin. Nice bold and sweet flavors. This has elements of an English barleywine. I love the deep rich caramel and pumpkin. I will pick this up again next year.

On tap at the Holy Grail Pub in Plano.

The beer pours a dark amber-brown color with a tan head. The aroma is very spicy. I get a ton of cinnamon and nutmeg, as well as some pumpkin and some alcohol.

The flavor is similar. What really stands out is the intense cinnamon, nutmeg and clove notes. There is also some pumpkin notes, as well as quite a bit of booze.

Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Appearance: Darker almost brown color with a beige head. Head was thick and lasted a bit.

Smell: Smells of nutmeg, brown sugar, malts and pumpkin. This beer is very close to the smell of a pumpkin pie.

Mouthfeel/Taste: Smooth medium to full bodied. Taste is that of pumpkin, brown sugar, nutmeg and some other mild spices that go with pumpkin pie type flavors.

Overall: Very enjoyable seasonal brew, I will buy this again no questions asked!

Appearance: Fairly dark reddish-orange with large, bubbly tan head that leaves some sticky lacing.

Smell: Cherry and some floral, spicy notes. That's about it, with only a titch of the pumpkin spices.

Taste: Cherry stands out here as well, but there are also major nutty and roasted notes. Autumn spices add to the profile.

Feel: Fairly smooth, medium-full body but there is a strange off-dry chalky finish that detracts slightly.

Overall: Despite some issues with the aroma and mouthfeel, this is still a tasty brew. And that is certainly most important.

Fat Jack opens with a thick, rich, hearty pumpkin pie aroma, the nose immediately recalling grandma’s house at Thanksgiving with layers of pumpkin and heavy spice, including ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove/allspice. The spices might actually be a bit too heavy here, especially the ginger, which easily dominates the spices and actually slightly overwhelms the pumpkin. The malts are biscuit and toasty, adding a piecrust rim, and the sugars are full enough to seem almost like whipped cream. There are also good touches of vanilla and caramel, as well as a liqueur-strong whiff of alcohol, which when combined with the sugars and caramels resembles a cream liqueur. Some light chocolates and coffee. As a whole, the nose is very full, and boasts an impressive range of notes. Again, the spices might be a bit too heavy, but not obscenely so, making the beer as a whole smell like an alcoholic pumpkin pie with about 25% too much spice.

On the tongue, the beer opens with a heavy pumpkin and spice whang, slamming the tongue with virtual chunks of pumpkin flesh blended with, in descending order, ginger, nutmeg, allspice, and cinnamon. The ginger still seems slightly overpowering here, but much less so than it seemed on the nose. Still, the spices are a bit heavy overall. Some vanilla, toast crust, and biscuit float around in the background, mixed with a heavy peppery layer. There are also a few toasted pecans, some caramel, and a heavy dollop of brown sugar. Noticeable throughout the mouthful and lasting into the aftertaste is a vodka-like alcoholic burn that seems stronger than it should be for an 8.5% ABV beer, biting at the soft palate and tongue and actually seeming to increase in potency as the beer is held in the mouth and the sugars die off. When mixed with a medium-high carbonation, this high alcohol burn creates a seltzer liqueur sensation. Otherwise the aftertaste is more heavily-spiced pumpkin pie, and good remnants of homemade crust. Mouthfeel is an oily medium-light to medium.

Overall, this is a decent pumpkin-based beer, and it’s immediately obvious why Sam Adams chose to label this as a “Double Pumpkin” beer: the flavors are huge, and enough raw pumpkin has entered the mix to leave an oily sensation in the mouth after swallowing. The spices are slightly over-large, however, and the heavy alcoholic burn does somewhat detract from the flavors. And just at the edges of the beer is a very raw pumpkin flavor—not pumpkin pie-cooked, but raw straight from the gourd—which is also offsetting. Decent, but could have used a bit more fine-tuning.

Poured from 650 ml bottle into a Sam Adams perfect pint glass. Batch no. 1.

Appearance: Pours a deep and slightly hazy brownish amber. Lots of bubbles and a solid three fingers of off white head with good retention. Leaves a decent amount of lacing around the glass.

Smell: A very malty aroma with mix of spices and pumpkin. Toasted malts with hints of caramel, toffee, biscuit, and a little smoke. Solid hints of pumpkin. Spices including cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and ginger. Spices are quite noticeable but not overwhelming. Pumpkin smells real. Also some earthy, grassy, hops adding some balance. A pretty solid well balanced aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a solid malty, spicy taste with a good dose of pumpkin. Toasted malts with a taste of caramel, toffee, smoke, and biscuit. A good taste of real pumpkins. Solid spicing with notes of nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, and allspice. Some grassy and earthy hops that add some bitterness and dryness. A big taste that is well balanced. Pretty good.

Mouthfeel: Medium to heavy bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Creamy, spicy, and pretty smooth. Alcohol is hidden well.

Overall: A really solid take on the pumpkin ale style. Real pumpkin taste with a solid spicing that doesn't go overboard.

Appearance is a deep ruby hue with highlights all day thick textured tan head fills the glass, light sporadic chunky layered lacing gives you the idea of texture. Aroma has a hint of spice and earthy hop additions it's actually pretty muted on the nose. go figure. Flavor has it all ginger, all spice, cinnamon to the point where it almost burns you, it's a beer that actually feels like it's a heated addition due to the level of ginger this Fat Jack decided to take on. It's a big beer almost too much, calories I could guess at least 500 per 12 ounce serving. Residual sugars flood the mouthfeeel making it full to the bone. I want an easy drinking ale to come around.

A- This beer pours a slightly dense dark caramel red body with a gentle carbonation and a sticky light tan cream head that last for a good bit.

S- The gentle blend of pumpkin spice and dry toffee notes are mellow and mild.

T- The nice toasted malt flavor has some depth with a dark toffee flavor to follow and a faint smoke or char note that lingers. There is a creamy sweetness that grows in the finish as the beer opens.

M- This beer has a medium-full mouthfeel with a creamy texture and a nice alcohol warmth coming through as it warms.

O- The nice malt depth with subtle spices have an interesting smoke hint and a pumpkin tartness that come through when it is warm. Nice solid pumpkin beer.

Poured from a 22oz (1pt 6 oz) bomber into a heavy beer mug.

A - Pours a clear, deep amber-brown reminiscent of past-peak New England autumn leaves. About an inch of light khaki head began to form 3/4 of the way into the pour, which dissipated after about a minute leaving a light foam layer on the surface along with a solid quilt of lacing along the sides of the glass that stayed throughout.

S - Lots happening here; very up front with toasted malt, heavy bread, spices (nutmeg, cinnamon, and a little allspice) and of course pumpkin. Hints of sweet, dried fruit and chestnuts combine with vanilla and finish with some mild citrus hop notes.

T - Much of what's exposed in on the nose unfolds on the tongue, and then some. Waves of toasted malt and dried dark fruit and bread for days at first, giving way to the spice notes and the slightest hint of hops to dry it up towards the end. Surprisingly the pumpkin flavor itself doesn't really make it's debut until after the swallow, first arriving as a hearty squash flavor and then opening into the sweeter hints of vanilla and caramel that is expected in pumpkin pie. The 8.5% ABV is surprisingly well hidden in terms of flavor, really only showing itself due tot he inevitable warmth it brings.

M - Reminiscent of many Oktoberfest brews in my opinion. A hearty, beefy quaff that lets you know its there while you're sipping but cleans up towards the end. Upon the first few sips I actually had to double-check to see that it was in fact an ale and not a weak stout, which it really does mirror in some ways with how malt-forward the brew is. IMO the moderately high ABV does just enough to keep it from being syrupy without diluting it too much.

O - Overall, one of the more interesting Pumpkin beers I've had so far this year. It's a solid take on the style with a lot going on in the nose and palate, but to me it doesn't overdo any of the characteristics that it's going for. In a sea of over-spiced and/or over-sweetened pumpkin-soda-beers, this one stands on the higher end and will definitely be a brew I'll look forward to. If you're someone who generally partakes in the Sam Adams stigma and would have avoided it because of the name, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised if you reconsider and pick up a bomber or five.

This beer is a deep mahogany red-brown in color, or perhaps a cherry wood, with lots of clarity. There's a creamy ring of tight head that doesn't exactly form a crown; it probably looks better out of the bottle, but off the tap it fades to a thin foam and leaves a broken sheet of lacing that peters to spotting.
The profile features some natural pumpkin flesh but is centered more on spicing, which isn't overdone but excellently balanced, and the strong malts backbone. It's sweet but not cloying, offering some brown sugar to complement lots of nutmeg, allspice, cinnamon and the like. The malt sets a firm foundation to rest upon and the pumpkin itself isn't neglected. This is nicely done overall.
The feel has both crispness and smoothness but leans more crisp with a bit of a bite. It's got an even carbonation in a medium body.

A: Pours a dark ruby with a 1.5 finger off white head. A little bit of visible carbonation, head sticks around as a thin film and ring around the sides of the glass.

S: Spicy nose, I get nutmeg, cinnamon and allspice. Pumpkin may be in the background but hard to tell from the overpowering spice. Roasted malts and carmel in there as well.

T: More dark tasting than most pumpkin beers I have had. Almost as sweet the pie itself. A fair amount of carmel. Could use a little more pumpkin in the front, pretty dominated by spice.

M: Fairly heavy body that comes off a little syrupy. Isn't too sticky or anything. Low carbonation. Alcohol is well hidden.

Overall a good addition to the pumpkin scene. Glad Sam Adams stepped it up a little and released this in compliment to their regular harvest pumpkin. Always been a fan of pumpkin beers.

12 oz bottle, poured into a pint glass

Appearance: Pours a beautiful, deep, dark mahogany color with a full finger of white head that quickly dissolved into a thin lacing of foam that covered the entire top of the beer.

Aroma: Malty and bready up front with strong notes of pumpkin, cinnamon, brown sugar, all-spice and ginger. Not much in the hops department though.

Taste: Very malty and bready, like freshly baked gingerbread, followed by pumpkin, spices of cinnamon, all-spice, nutmeg, ginger, brown sugar. There is practically no hops bitterness to speak of, which I overall prefer. This beer tastes essentially like an English brown ale with pumpkins and spices added to it. Delicious!

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied to slightly chewy. Hardly any carbonation to speak of. With an ABV of 8.5%, there is some alcohol presence on the palate.

Overall: I really, really like this beer! As stated above, it’s basically an English brown ale flavored with pumpkins and spices, and I find it very delicious. I’m definitely getting a bottle or two of this next year!

I do love this time of year with all the pumpkin beers coming out. You never know what each year will bring in taste and style.
When I poured this Fat Jack, I was someone puzzled. The aroma highlited spices, but the glass was weak. The color was dark but not something that you could showcase.

The taste was nothing exciting. There was some of the typical pumpkin spices, but not one of them stood out.

Sorry, but this was just not one of my styles of pumpkin beer

Poured from 22 oz. bottle into a snifter.

The big head and abundant lace are immediately noticeable. This is quite a divergence from other pumpkin beers that I have had of late...in a good way. The beer is dark brown with orange tint, very suggestive of autumn. The smell is again different from other pumpkin beers I've tried in that it is not dominated by spice. Instead, the smell is much more reminiscent of an imperial stout. It's boozy and smells potent with a deep malt profile.

The taste surprises as well, as the beer is more hop forward than I've experienced with pumpkin beers. Caramel and toffee notes hit the tongue first, followed by subtle pumpkin and spice and a bit of heat from the booze. Smokiness shows up throughout and adds a layer of complexity. The beer drinks much more like an imperial stout or dark strong ale, with a thick mouthfeel and alcohol burn similar to those beers. Still, it is smooth, complex and overall quite enjoyable. I am impressed by this beer and surprised it doesn't receive more mention or love such as what Pumking gets.

Appearance - Pours a clear, deep, near ruby brown with an off-white, yellowsish two-finger head. Fair retention. The lacing is spotty a best.

Smell - Hits on strong nutmeg and cinnamon character with lesser notes of pumpkin taking a backseat. Hints at a subtle, lightly baked pie crust aroma.

Taste - Follows the nose. Pumpkin flavor is subdued in favor of the nutmeg and cinnamon spice. Hints of pie crust. Finishes with a bit brown sugar sweetness and a moderate alcohol heat.

Mouthfeel - Medium-bodied with a tingly carbonation. Somewhat creamy. Finishes fairly dry.

Overall - This is basically their Harvest Pumpkin Ale on steroids. That's not necessarily a good thing, as the Harvest Pumpkin wasn't all that good to begin with. Drinkable, but not too terribly enjoyable, and I cringe at the thought of paying the full asking price for it.

Pours a clear dark brown with a big thick head as most Sam Adams brews do.

Smell is heavy on pumpkin spice. A lot darker than most pumpkin beers. Very good smelling beer.

Great taste. Again, much darker than most pumpkin beers. Good spice here with some dark malt. The pumpkin comes through but it tastes more natural with nowhere near the sweetness. Has a little bit of a bubblegum sweetness.

Great mouthfeel. Nice amount of carbonation. Good body.

Would definitely drink again. Great pumpkin beer without being overly sweet.

A - dark caramel brown with a soft brown head

S - pumpkin, caramel, cinnamon, allspice

T - pumpkin, allspice, nutmeg, caramel, cinnamon

M - medium bodied, smooth, well carbonated

This is a really delicious pumpkin ale. It's not over spiced and the pumpkin comes through nicely. There's a great balance here that most pumpkin ales don't reach. The caramel notes that come through smooth out the spices and offer some drinkability. The ABV is also well hidden. I will definitely return to this as the fall season approaches.

Clear, deep red brew with lots of center action, and topped by a solid creamy/light tan head. Good retention and nice lacing.

Smells quite a lot like pumpkin pie. Spices and pumpkin are present in roughly equal quantities; almost a buttery quality. Difficult to pick out any of the malt profile; caramel and toffee, perhaps a bit of vanilla.

Sweet and smooth flavor: definitely a pumpkin pie factor. Very rich. This kind of hyperbole is overused with these kinds of pumpkin ales, but in this case, I think it's accurate: imagine pumpkin pie in a glass.

Mouthfeel is surprisingly thick and creamy.

This may be the most under the radar pumpkin beer out there for craft beer geeks, simply because it's made by SA. Don't overlook it; it's maybe the best non-porter pumpkin-style ale I've had yet.

Poured into a Duvel tulip class.....

A - This is a great looking beer. Clear, dark brown with a tall head.
S - Aroma is more pumpkin than anything else.
T - Not a fan of the flavors. Tastes more medicinal than anything else. Needs more pumpkin or spices.
M - Medium thick, taste sticks around.
O - This is my second bottle of the season and I'd say it is disappointing. Won't be buying any Fat Jack next year.
