Poured from bottle into a snifter glass

Appearance – The beer pours a deep ruby/mahogany color bordering on brownish. Upon pouring there is a one-half inch finger of tan colored head. The head fades over a moderate amount of time leaving a decent level of streaky lace on the sides of the glass and a good level of bubbly persistent foam on the surface of the brew.

Smell – The aroma has lots of roasted pumpkin with a good deal of brown sugar and toffee sweetness. Along with these aromas, are some lighter spice aromas of nutmeg, allspice, and cinnamon. A little bit of a bready aroma and a small amount of roasted nut are there as well.

Taste –The taste begins with a sweet caramel and toffee flavor mixed with a good dose of smooth roasted pumpkin. The sweetness is much more then I was anticipating from the nose, with the roasted pumpkin being much less. Spice flavors are present from the start, with flavors of cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice all present. For the most part the spice remains at a rather low level with the nutmeg and cinnamon flavors increasing a bit more toward the end. Some light bitter nutty and earthy flavors come to the tongue at the end, balancing out the sweetness a bit. Along with this, so too comes some alcohol flavors, which in the end when mixed with the rest, leave a nice warming and moderately sweet pumpkin pie flavor on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the creamier and chewier side with a carbonation level that is on the average side. The thicker and chewier body are rather nice for the sweeter pumpkin flavors of the brew and make it a rather nice slow sipper.

Overall – A rather tasty pumpkin ale. It’s a little on the sweeter side for an imperial pumpkin ale, but is still balanced in many respects, as it has a good blend of booze, spice, and pumpkin to tame the sweet. Overall a rather enjoyable drinker.

A - Poured on tap at a beer festival, not sure if it's the beer or the pour, but it had literally no head, even agitating it a little bit didn't make any head appear. Was a deep brown color with some orange hues.

S - The pumpkin smell is just incredible, huge pumpkin showing, maybe a little malt, some caramel, and a lot of pumpkin pie spice.

T - It tastes like a dark lager maybe, a little lighter maybe. Not very much pumpkin to be had here, maybe a hint here and there, but after touting itself as a "double pumpkin ale", I was expecting to be drowning in pumpkin. Not a bad tasting beer, just not very pumpkiny. Some hints of candied dark fruit, some dark malt sweetness, and a hint of straw or earthiness. Finish is kind of fruity, not pumpkin, maybe some candied fruit or fruitcake, with a dark undertone of pumpernickel bread or sourdough, and a trace of pumpkin pie here and there, but nothing significant to be found.

M - Sort of watery, very very cold with little to no texture. Some attempts at thickness, but does seem to stick to the mouth, albeit for only a few moments.

O - Sam Adams has always has unique seasonal beers, and this one, unfortunately, is a little disappointing. Sure it has some pumpkin, but I was hoping for more. A lot more, as a fall-themed beer, it's great, but as a pumpkin beer, it misses its mark.

Served from a 22 oz. bottle into a tulip.

A: Pours somewhere between a dark amber and a transparent brown. Minimal lacing and small bubbles remain along the edges of glass.

S: Yams, honey and dark fruits crowd the senses. Pleasant and autumnal.

T: Molasses, honey, strawberry preserves. Surprisingly, not much of a pumpkin flavor. A bit too sweet after the second sip.

M: Medium bodied.

O: A pretty good seasonal from Sam Adams. This is a nice alternative to the droves of lighter/smoother pumpkin ales that flood the market around this time of year. A bit too sweet for my tastes, but good in small doses.
