The new addition to the Winter Classics pack from Samuel Adams... Interesting.
Has a great-looking body to it. Near pitch-black liquid is complemented with a tan, finger-thick had. Great retention, cuddles the glass all of the way down. Well-done.
Leaning forward, a strong smell of roasted malts floats up to my nose immediately. Mixture of ground coffee beans and dark chocolate mostly. There's also a small trace of oatmeal notes present, but normally this is drowned out by the rest of it.
The taste doesn't hold a candle to the scent. Surprisingly sharp carbonation shocks the tongue as a thin line of bitter coffee notes comes to life. Very roasted flavor with a slight fruitiness to it, but the way it sort of sticks to the back of my tongue isn't all that welcome. Body does have a nice slickness to it, with a slight, warming kick of alcohol striking ont he back end. Not bad.
Like most Samuel Adams brews, this one comes really close to be a home run, but falls just short in some way. A welcome, if unexceptionable, addition to one my favorite winter mixes.

A: Pours a dark, black with a short lived dark tan head.
S: Very malty aroma with no hop aroma. Lots of dark fruit, raisin. good amount of chocolate and coffee. Some alcohol notes in the aroma.
T: Big burst of coffee and cream with a chocolate hit soon after with a bit of raisin. Black coffee makes up the bulk of the aftertaste with a mild black olive note . No hop flavor to speak of. The alcohol is hidden well and it has a slight acidic bite. Finishes dry.
M: Medium full body almost chewy with low carbonation.
O: This is a decent stout. Big coffee flavor but for me a little too big, It lacks something, perhaps a complexity that other stouts have. It's definitely a beer that I would have no problem sitting back with on a cold winter night.
