Very overlapping huge head when poured with a very dark malty red appearance. It has an amazing smell of some West Coast IPA's that I'ved smelled in the past. Definitely getting smells of earthy, pine, wood, herbal and grapefruit smells. I also get a sweet roasted smell that is reminiscent of caramel and oak. Its tastier than the Latitude 48 but that still is a really good beer as well.
The taste is spicy, resinous hops with a sweet malt somewhat similar to their malt backbone for their Latitude 48 but with some oak woody flavors and then ending with a grapefruit, pine, herbal and citrusy hop bitter tasting finish. I like this better than their Latitude 48 actually the malts come together more for a nicer oak, wood, caramel bready finish and the hops shine through it with all the flavors I mentioned above as well as some mintyness from the hops.
I'm very impressed with this beer from them it definitely stands up to other stronger IPA's that I've had and it seems like Samuel Adams has been really really kicking it up a notch these days with their quality and selection of their beers.

A-Dark red-brown, like bottled syrup. Dense thick body color. When held to light a faint, slightly perceptible color brightening occurs reminiscent of pomegranate juice and red wine. Off-white head. Very thick, like marshmallow cream. Head life is great. Sticky, clingy webbed lacing decorates the glass. The solid depth of the body looks nice, though I wish there was more bright highlighting and glossy edging. Still, a memorable looking beer.
S-Smells like vats of caramel and molasses. Powerful. Honey glazed malts. Raisins. Dates. Prunes. Figs. Brown sugar. Overall smells like fruit cake. Great smells. The highlight of the brew.
T-Taste follows the nose: Caramel, molasses, sweet malts, dark dried fruits and brown sugar. Mellow grapefruit comes to play as well. The sip starts sweet and then morphs into a bitter blast reminiscent of limes that lasts into the aftertaste. The gentle grapefruit streams and courses throughout the entire sip from start to finish. Hops pop up and pound on the tongue in an interesting choppy rhythm, not in a consistent smooth one. Nice bold tastes, with enough sweetness to cure a sweet tooth. Tastes Imperial, call it a "Red DIPA".
M-A low medium body, medium-low. Quasi-creamy. A welcome watery touch to the chew makes said brew fluid and chuggable. Very robust feels. Super sweets, ultra bitters. A light hop bite tingles the tongue. Astringency enters a tad when warmed. Also when warmed, sours & bitters crank up. This is good at first. Then it becomes, "okay, this is getting old". The bitter aftertaste lasts too much. The sweets should wash it out but don't. So maybe drink somewhat fast, the beer will sour too much as well. Non-nursing beer.
O-Tasman Red IPA is one of the better small batch beers Samuel Adams offers. Packs enough smells, tastes and feels. Looks solid. Bomber worthy purchase. One won't fret if it's discontinued, but this is a style of IPA that needs to be done more. Might be too pungent for some in smell and taste. Drink fast I repeat again. The beer will become sickeningly sour and brazenly bitter. But while it's cold, it is refreshing and bold. Worth another buy.
