12 oz bottle served into tulip pint.

Deep plum red body with a beige head rising a mighty 2.5 fingers but settling down with decent speed. Surprisingly thick rings of lacing are left behind-- this might be one of the better looking Sam Adams beers I've ever seen.

Smells of bready malt with hints of toffee.... and a floral hop profile that almost, but not quite, provides notes of citrus and pine.

Little chalky feel left behind after sips....

Not really hoppy enough to be an IPA... but call this a red ale, and watch people give it higher reviews.
Overall-- not bad on first sip, but as I sit and get to know it, this beer causes a strange feeling of tasting bile that lingers in the chalkiness.
I know its fashionable to take a swing at SA, but I really wanted to like this one. Sadly it wasnt to be.

Got my tasman also in the hopolgy for 12.99 in wisconsin. Enjoyed this brew on the eve of a red snowy day ahead.

Appearance of amber or dark ruby, tan head, fair lace.

Aroma of malty grapefruit, ha? Earthy, tabacco. Leathery.

Taste of toasted malts, Bready, earthy tabacco, yet a balance of citric hops, grapefruit.

Mouthfeel was surprisingly smooth. Not too bold or overpowering.

Overall a good, flavorful red. Enjoyed indeed.

A: A medium dark copper with good clarity. There s good head stand of light tan foam. Good head retention.

S: Moderate citrus hops but nothing really exciting with a moderate caramel malt aroma.

T: The caramel malt flavor is just a little bit stronger than the citrus hop flavor. A moderate hops bitterness with a moderate malt sweetness giving a somewhat bitter balance. There is some lingering hops bitterness in the finish.

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

O: With a name like Red IPA one would expect a fair amount of malt character but without enough hops bitterness and flavor I'm kind of disappointed in the overall balance. Maybe their looking to appeal to a broader audience like an IPA for those that don't like bitter beers. This bottle was from a case labeled best before June 2013 but the hops character s already muted.
