A nice copper color, with some purple in the light. A light tan head leaves plenty of lacing, and some spotty retention as I finish the glass.

Smell is all malt, toasted, and almost caramel, some piney aroma joins as the beer warms.

Taste is similar to the nose, only a bit less. It's supposed to be and IPA, but the focus here is on the red flavors, roasted malt, hops in the background.

A bit bubbly, and light. Easy to drink.

An overall good beer, but not an IPA, as much as a red.

Sample: 1 bottle 2012

A: Deep reddish brown, nice small head, moderate internal carbonation

S: Strong citrus and hops, some spice notes, traces of alcohol are present, pretty fragrant

T: Very intense and almost biting hop flavor, mild tropical fruit hints throughout, some pepper notes, but quite fleeting

M: Smooth, but intensity of flavor certainly adds to drinking difficulty, while delicious, certainly not something to rapidly consume

O: A nice and hoppy, very strong red, but at only 6.75% abv, I'm pleased it comes in a double-size, take your time with this one

$4.99 for a 22oz bottle @ Bevco.
Brewed with Two-row Harrington, Metcalf, and Copeland pale malts, Special B, Caramel 60, and Carafa III. Hopped with Australian Topaz and Galaxy hops.
OG=16.4° Plato, 6.75%ABV, Calories/12 oz.: 223, 80 IBU's.

Pours out to a brilliantly clear beautiful deep ruby, forming a tall whipped yellow head with superior retention and beautiful lacing. Gorgeous looking brew. Aroma of fresh tropical fruit from the hops, like mango and pineapple with a touch of pine. Mouthfeel is medium-dense body, rich, soft and smooth. Nice level of carbonation, on the medium low side (about 2 carbs). Taste begins and ends with hops galore sitting on top of a nice malty backbone with a touch of caramel. Cleanly fermented neutral ale yeast. Just a touch of huskiness and graininess lingers in the finish. Moderate bitterness...not too pungent, so drinkability is good. Suggestions of oaky vanilla in the aftertaste.

Pretty good beer. This reminds me of Lagunitas Censored or Lucky 13 or close to Founders Reds Rye. Good stuff.

From Batch no. 2. Sampled on March 16, 2012. It is an attractive dark amber pour with a huge, puffy, tan head that lingers and leaves lacing. The aroma brings out some bready sweet malts, pine hops, and a hint of grapefruit. The body comes in better than medium. This really does have the typical red style character in the taste with a larger proportion of bitter hops bringing up the rear. It is also very unique with a slightly tart fruity character too. Complex for sure.

Thanks to Alan McCormick for passing this one along.

This pours almost opaque copper with a nice frothy khaki head that leaves good lace on the way down. On the nose there is biscuit and some caramel with pine lurking further down. In the mouth the biscuit and bread dominates, with any bitterness, mainly in the form of pine, taking over only after the malts die away. The body is exceptionally smooth and there is a long finish where what bitterness there is shines through.

Overall, this is a somewhat interesting beer, but not one I'll be seeking out. There isn't enough bitterness here for me to see this having IPA anywhere on the label. That said it is utterly devoid of the Sam Adams house note, which always a plus and a surprise.

22 oz. Sam Adams bomber poured into a large globe glass. Pours a clear deep ruby brown with an inch of porous off white foam. Solid lace with moderate retention.

Aroma is dry and a bit charred with hints of roast and some caramel malts. The IPA moniker seems undeserved as the hop profile is present and accounted for though a bit earthy but not too strong. At the same time the dry nature of the beer keeps the malt profile rather simple.

Flavor is dry and chalky as the nose might suggest. Not bad but lacking the malt depth of your typical Red Ale as well as the hop love of an IPA of any race, creed or color. Bit of hop spice encourages the feel a bit.

Overall a bit of an outlier. Not something I would buy again in a large format bottle but would agree to in a mixed 12er. Nothing special to offer really.

Poured into a snifter. Batch #1.

4.5 A: Clear deep amber color. Three fingers of tan, frothy/creamy head. Retention is good with lots of lacing left behind.

4.0 S: The label said to expect grapefruit, pine, and earthy notes. Earthy I get plenty of, but not much pine and grapefruit. There's a case for floral, however. In any case, the real focus is the malts. Caramel overload with some toffee. Toastiness abounds. Rich, sweet neutral maltiness to tie it together.

3.5 T: The taste is good, but it seems confused. It's like it wants to be a malt bomb, but the hops get in the way. Low end of moderate bitterness. Earthy and flowery hop taste foremost with a touch of pine underneath. Caramel and toffee are back, but with less thrust. Toastiness is still at it though. Reasonably clean and not sweet, but not dry either.

3.0 M: Medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Not as creamy as I'd like, but decent here.

3.5 D: It's no Nugget Nectar, but it isn't bad. I think this is the last of this series for me to vanquish, but SA is always coming out with new stuff so who knows. Worth a try, but not a re-buy.

Another typically solid offering from BBC. Apperance is great with a nice auburn color and good amounts of slightly off white lace. Smell was sweet and malty off the top with with some nuttiness hanging in the background. Flavor was a nice supprise with a typical red ale sweetness up front but backed up nicely with good piney hops in the finish which added a nice dry balance to the sweetness. Mouthfeel was not too thick, no too thin and carbonation level was nice. This is a very tasty brew and one I'd like to enjoy again.

On tap served in a pint glass.

A - Dark amber color with a finger to 1.5 of fluffy off white head. Clear and leaves a decent lacing down the glass.

S - Smells somewhat citrusy, but also some earthy/floral hops. Get a little sweet maltiness in there. Above average, but not fantastic.

T - Get some definite classic malt for the style. More prominent, however, are some citrus and earthy hops, and a little spiciness. The reason I gave it a 2.5 is because of the horrible aftertaste. Tastes incredibly metallic, and with the color I couldn't help thinking of blood. Horrible thought when you're drinking a beer.

M - Good level of carbonation. Goes down smooth, but the horrible aftertaste kills the drinkability for me.

O - It's a good beer that goes horribly wrong a few seconds after you take a drink. I have no idea if something was wrong with the keg or the tap lines, but I had 2 other beers that tasted fine to me. I hope this wasn't how it always is, but the reviewer right below me seems to have had the same problem. Won't be drinking this again.

Thick and foamy light khaki colored head. A bit darker than I expected, deep ruby color. Pretty good lacing as well.

Bright hop aroma, more herbal than citrus to me. I also detect a strange... metallic undertone maybe? Meh.

Tastes more citrusy than herbal, opposite of what I smelled. I'm getting a slight metallicy aftertaste as well. Bottle is fresh, maybe it's just me... Some roasted malt flavors come through underneath.

Feels coarse and bubbly.

I wish the metallic flavor I'm getting wasn't here, it's distracting. I will probably get this again to see if it's either my lack of sleep playing tricks on me, or this bottle.

Aroma is hoppy and - hoppy. Not strong, but hoppy with a little evergreen, definitely an IPA. It pours a clear, dark mahogany/coppery brown with a fairly thick and persistent light tan head that leaves some good lacing. Hoppy flavor has evergreen, caramel and woody notes plus a hint of miso. Smooth texture has about average body and average fizziness. Overall, though not notable, still worthy of at least a try.
