T-piney up front finishing with a nice hop kick. thick maltiness all the way through.

Appearance: 22oz bottle poured into Sam Adams "Perfect Pint." Colour is a deep, rich brown. Large 2-finger head. No visible carbonation.

Smell: Lots of floral, citrus hops. Malts are a little too weak to be called "roasted" with "toffee" on the label. The hops are brilliant, though.

Taste: Overall, far more balanced than the smell. The malts bring back the hops a bit but I'm not finding anything too interesting. This tastes more like a good IPA than a red ale.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied, silky and sticky, has fair amount of carbonation - just a small bite.

Overall: It's good but I'm unimpressed. Most red ales I've had have something to them that is missing. Perhaps some spicy yeast or a sort of spice. As stated earlier, this taste more like a solid IPA than a red ale.

Drank on 2/29/12. Batch #2.

Deep and rich amber color with a huge cream colored fluffy head with fantastic lacing.

Nice pine and earthy hop noted in the nose. A slight hint of some roasted malt backbone rounded out by some citrus aroma.

Hops and malt work very well together in this brew. Bitter pine notes but a nice and rich malt background that balances everything out very well. I can’t recall ever having a beer brewed with Topaz or Galaxy hops but I’m digging it so far.

Medium bodied with a creamy finish. Adequate carbonation throughout.

Love or hate them, Sam Adams will come out with the occasional gem, and this is one of them. Great beer for a great price, highly recommended if you’re a fan of IPAs or Ambers.
