Nice appearance, Mahogany-red color with a decent tan head.

I want a big hop nose in an IPA... this does not have it! I smell more caramel than hops.

Taste is, again, mostly caramel. Some hop bitterness, but not much hop flavor. Typical of many SA offerings: they brag about the hops in their beer, then deliver muddy, muted hop flavor! Unusual slightly sour note.

Okay mouthfeel.

Wouldn't go out of my way for one of these! I'm seriously surprised by all the good reviews this is getting!

Batch #1. Poured into a nonic.
A- Pours a deep copper, almost mohagany, body with a foamy 2-finger head that sticks around and shows some nice lace.

S- Resiny hop aroma up front, piney, slightly citrusy, some caramel/toffee to it. Almost a slight aroma of old coffee.

T- Not too bad, but not too great either. More bitterness than any real hop flavor. There is some sticky pine flavor which fits nicely with the touch of maltiness. Flavor is quick to leave once you swallow, not too much lingering flavor.

MF- Moderately bodied, not overly carbonated.

O- Not a bad shot at this, but I'd like to see them refine it just a bit more. For the price though, couldn't pass up trying this one.

Bottle labeled as "Batch No. 1"
Poured into chimay chalice glass.

A: Deep translucent copper color with a fizzing 1 finger head that receded into frothy islands of light tan foam. Good amount of sticky lacing.

S: Good amount of citrus fruit aroma, grapefruit comes to mind. Floral and earthy aromas are also noticeable. The malt is sweet and strong of toffee and caramel, almost reminds me of juicy fruit gum.

T: Strong mix of citrus and pine hop flavors clashing together. The malt comes through briefly, showing signs of sweetness and a decent amount of body. But the grapefruit hop flavor dominates soon after, finishing bitter and dry.

M/O: Solid medium body, light-medium carbonation. Bit of a creamy mouthfeel. It's pretty drinkable, although I am enjoying the second half of the bottle as a sipper. My hat's off to Sam Adams on this beer, it is pretty good. Not the most in your face beer, but definitely plenty of bittering hop flavor mixed with a solid amount of malt body.

A - Pours a dark ruby red with a tan frothy head. Quite a bit of lacing. Looks good.

S - Nose is weak. What I can detect are some citrus hops, some earthy hops and some toasty malts.

T - Taste is quite balanced between the rich malt and the clean bitter hops. Has a certain candyness to the bitter hops that actually makes it pretty drinkable.

M- Mouthfeel is somewhat smooth.

O - Overall a pretty decent brew although not enough nose or citrus hops to qualify as IPA in my book.
