a great great ipa with an even better idea behind it. taking cascade hops from three regions, the uk, new Zealand, and the pacific northwest and putting them into the same brew as ah homage to james cook, its brilliant. it pours dakrer than expected with quite a bit of amber tinted caramel malt color to it, active carbonation and a frothy white head that looks more like ocean foam than beer topping, just lovely. the beer is a little cloudy, and it emits aomas of zesty citrus rind, alpha acid, and sour patch kids. its mouthwatering and refreshing in one sniff. the malt contributes a lot more to the flavor than to the nose, with some sweetness and an almost graham crackery grain complex that supports the increasingly bitter hops very well. the beer is balanced well for being so aggressively hopped, and the alcohol is disguised expertly. I love the way I can twirl my glass just a little and awaken a massive new head on it. it is visual evidence of a very creamy mouthfeel, punctuated by sharp carbonation and a clean but very bitter finish. an excellent beer from an excellent series and a repeatable price.

Color- light red amber. Medium head.
Aroma- crisp winter night in the pine forest.
Taste- starts silky with a balance of butter and hops with grapefruit jolly rancher candy notes finishing with a Dogfishhead butteryness.
Poured from 355 ml bottle into a Liefmans Goudenband glass (my preferred all purpose beer tasting glass). Tasted March 2013.
