glass: pint

clear amber/brown color with a 1 finger semi-creamy head. Lacing is nice. Aroma is rather mild. A little brown sugar, grapes and light bread.

Taste is very mild and subdued. A little butterscotch, grape, and a soft bread. A bit astringent on the finish. Mouthfeel is a soft medium, typical of many of SA beers, medium carbonation.

Nothing groundbreaking here, just a simple, plain, well-balanced red ale.

12oz brown bottle with a freshness date.

LOOK: Dark copper hue, sufficient amount of head

SMELL: Caramel, faint oak, browned apples, mild alcohol esters, vanilla, grassy hop

TASTE: Big smoothness, creamy, pull of oakiness, caramel, vanilla, soft hop resin, light biscuit, ripe apples and pears, semi-dry finish

A great stab at the whole fresh barrel aged beer movement, this direction I'd love to see from more brewers. As for Mighty Oak, its a good start. The oak does come around and the beer is pretty drinkable, a bit more dry would work for me.

The beer pours a hazy brownish color with a small off-white head. The aroma is full of toffee and toasted malt, with a little bit of oak and some lighter fruit notes mixed in. The flavor is more the same, with a small amount of oak, which is almost completely masked by the toffee and caramel malt notes. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Single bottle from my Sam Adams sampler mix pack. Poured into a nonic. The tree on the label looks like it would be marvelous to sit under on a June day. The fact that it's February and -10 is not helping.

Nice copper amber colour, with a sturdy half-inch of off-white head. Lacing sheets, decent retention.

Nose is quite bready. Caramel, sweet malt, a touch of oak I suppose (though I wouldn't have identified it as such without the label).

The beer is a fairly standard red ale with just a touch of oak to cut in to the sweetness. Lighter bodied, easy carbonation.

Not my favorite of the pack, but the oak makes this one more pleasant to sip than a classic red ale would have.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into pint-like glass.

Appearance: Rich amber without much head and no lacing. Looks flat a couple minutes after pouring.

Smell: Cherry, caramel and vanilla. Very mild.

Taste: Tastes like a too sweet amber ale with a hint of vanilla. Virtually no hops.

Feel: Moderate carbonation, medium light body, very little dryness on the finish.

Overall: Maybe someone else can make a low abv oaked ale, because this is not really any better than a macro such as Michelob Amber Bock. Actually, I would rather have Amber Bock.

I'm not a fan of ambers and this reminded me of one except for the slightly oak'd taste. Nothing special with this beer. Quality is typical of a Samuel Adams beer. Good packaging and labeling. I'd would have preferred a stronger oak taste. Worth a try but I'd limit it to a six pack.

Poured from 12 oz. bottle into a Sam Adams perfect pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a deep and clear amber orange with lots of rising bubbles. Solid three fingers of off white head with very good retention. Lots of lace sticking to the glass.

Smell: Deep aroma of sweet caramel malts with notes of toffee and brown sugar. Oak and vanilla are fairly subtle but there. Also some light hints of dark fruit and some earthy hops in the background. Kind of smells like an oaked bock.

Taste: Sweet bready malts with lots of caramel and toffee. A little sugar and hints of dark fruit. Subtle hints of oak and vanilla towards the middle with a light hint of wood lingering into the aftertaste. Finishes with some hints of earthy hops. A good malty taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a medium to high level of carbonation. Creamy, slightly syrupy, and very smooth.

Overall: A nice tasting beer. Good use of malts although the oak could of been a little stronger.

Pours a pretty red color with great clarity and a thin 1/4" ring of white head. The aroma wasn't mighty. It was fair. There was a small amount of oak, nothing mighty. No hops.

Taste, ok, still a small amount of oak, and that's about it, a bland red ale with oak chips I guess. They started with a good premise. Bruery's Loakal Red is a red ale aged on oak. But what makes that beer great is that there is a great amount of Centennial hops in it. There's like, maybe 18 ibu in this beer. And the oak, is barely there. And any nuances of vanilla, citrus and whatnot is nonexistant here.

So, it is better than your averagee bland red ale, simply because of the nice small addition of oak in the flavor department. Next time, hop this guy up, add some vanilla, do something more, I think this is a good start, but far from complete.

Pours a bright clear red hue with a light tan khaki head forming thick and dwindling slow down the sides of my glass, the head is big bubbled with chunks of sporadic lacing left behind. Aroma has a nice caramel malt presence with a touch of oak/vanilla notes somewhat earthy blended notes but nothing as extreme in the oak character as most beergeeks are used to. Flavor is upfront with malt sweetness with a touch of toasted oak notes with a big fruity cherry note coming through and ending with a more caramelized malt presence. Drinking extremely effortlessly or I'm just really thirsty for a beer after work nothing extreme about the oak presence here. Just a nicely constructed red ale with a hint of something more complex than your typical red. Carbonation is sturdy really flows well, not cloyiing in anyway unless you're really sensitive to a maltier beer. Overall I would drink this again as part of a sampler but I couldn't honestly want to reach for just this in a sixer of it's own.

Appearance - Pours a deep, dark amber with a tinge of red. Almost no head to speak of.

Smell - This is an ale? Smells like a "Big 3" lager, with maybe a hint of caramel. This isn't boding well.

Taste - Generic beer taste. Subtle hints of caramel, but mostly it just tastes cheap. Finishes like it came out of an AB can... a lot of alkalinity with this one.

Mouthfeel - Light, and almost no carbonation to speak of... I've awoken to half empty beers with more carbonation than this.

Overall - Severely disappointed. This may be the worst beer I've ever had from Sam Adams. If you put me up in a blind taste test between this and Budweiser American Ale, it'd be blind luck if I got it right.

Found this in a Sam Adams brewmasters sampler 12 pack at Target, of all places. Hard to pass up as the sampler included three new varieties I hadn't yet tried. Poured into pint glass, with a perfect dark amber. Not much head, but decent lacing on the side of the glass. Mouthfeel was the low point for me, as there was no substance, just watery. Flavor was quite the opposite, though. Strong oak flavor, highlighted with a perfect blend of caramel and vanilla. This might be the driest finish of any beer I can recall. Decent beer that I would purchase on its own, away from the sampler. I want to prefer other breweries to Sam Adams, because I feel they are almost too mainstream. However, I can't deny that Jim Koch and crew put out some quality beverages. I'd rate it overall as an 89.

Pours a dark amber with a quarter inch of loose foamy head that has good retention. The nose has caramel and vanilla aromas. The flavor is heavy caramel up front with vanilla and oak in the finish. There is a strong hop bitterness in the finish as well. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and smooth with a decent amount of carbonation.

This is a decent beer but the caramel and vanilla are a little intense and sweet. It's one of the better beers in the mix pack however.

Attractive and clean/clear amber complexion, with an average head. Light, but frilly lacework.

Nose is malty. I get an earthy, almost Scottish peatiness in the aroma, somehow.

Taste is mild up front, with a malty sweetness on the palate following. The oak flavor is subtle, very subtle. Overall, not bad at all, but not one I'd pursue further, either.

Appearance: Great carbonation with a nice thin layer of foam on top. A fairly light red amber.

Smell: Good roasted and nutty toffee. Very candy-like. Hints of vanilla as well.

Taste/Mouthfeel: Pretty average in the flavor category. Roasted nuts that's a bit too burned. Some nice vanilla flavors here though, but they get watered down a bit.

Drinkability: Pretty average overall.

The Mightly Oak ale from Sammy A is a nice offering but not spectacular. It is ruby red with foamy white head that is lacing nicely. The smell is typical of most ambers....neat and malty. There is a slight woody/oak twang to the amber. The mouthfeel is medium body with big carbonation. Overall it is decent.

A- Pours a dark brownish amber color with an off-white head.

S- The aroma is very faint. There is some caramel and maybe a hint of vanilla. Not impressed with the aroma.

T- The taste is malty up front with some caramel sweetness and a touch of oak in the finish.

M- The mouthfeel is between light and medium bodied with a good amount of carbonation.

O- Overall, this one didn't do anything for me, it was just kind of bland.  I wouldn't purchase it again.

My bottle poured a clear, ruby red with an off-white head. In short, this tastes like an adjunct-free Yuengling. That is to say, it's a smoother red ale with nothing but pale and caramel barley character. If you're used to mass-produced red lagers, this is a treat. But I find it kind of simple for a craft beer. There's no real hops character, but the malt is clean and clear.

Pours a ruby amber color, so many things are ruby colored these days. But it is still good looking.

Very fragrant beer, not so much oak, but a lot of grain and some floral aromas.

Good flavor. There are some characteristics of a red ale mixed with a softer, tart malt character.

Creamy and tingly.

This beer tastes like someone blended a red ale with Franziskaner Hefe-Weisse Dunkel.

Pouts amber/orange with 2+ fingers of cream colored head. Average head retention & lacing

S: Butterscotch & oakyness, a bit of vanilla

T: Butterscotch oaky dryness, pears & dry bready notes up front. Vanilla & serious dryness mix with some sweet apple juice & oak chip notes. Finishes dry & sweet & with a touch of sweet & acidic apple

Medium bodied, skewing sweet, firm carbonation

I don't really care for this, the flavor mix & overall presentation are just very bland with cloying sweetness really bringing this down. Not one I would buy again. The flavors seem fake to me

Poured a crystal clear dark red with a nice long lasting creamy head.

The smell is light and malty with a touch of oak.

The flavor is a nice deep caramel malt with a touch of sweetness and some nice oak flavors, very light bit of earthy hops.

The mouthfeel is where the oak qualities really shine, giving it a nice dry finish.

Very drinkable yet interesting amber.

A: A dark, but clear red color with a very thin white head that doesn't leave much lace.
S: Caramel sweetness and not much else
T: Not as sweet as I expected from the nose, the oak definitely helps keep things in line. The oak is interesting here, it doesn't dominate, but it is very apparent. I think the underlying beer could use a little more malt character, it comes across as one dimensional.
M: I think this would come across as watery if not for the oak. The woodiness seems to add a little body although it is not overwhelming. Is it the tongue-coatingness of the tannins? Don't really know.
O: The oak is the most interesting thing here, the underlying beer seems to be on the simple side. I appreciate that this is just oak and not bourbon soaked oak, but it needs something else. Glad I tried it, but I won't go looking for it. Hopefully, the recipe can be tweaked and we can see Mighty Oak version 2 in the future from either Sam Adams or another brewery. More oaked beers please.

Pours a crystal clear copper color with a short dense off white head that settled into a sparse cap.

The aroma is quite malty sweet. Notes of toffee and caramel dominate the profile. There is a candied raisin scent as well as a good shot of vanilla. Not much wood notes from the oak.

The taste is of an amber base with some lemony tea flavors. Again big toffee, caramel, and vanilla sweetness. Vanilla almost tastes artifical, cloying. A bit of a grassy hop.

Moderate body with tingly carbonation. Sweet on the palate but does dry towards the finish.

Really no personality to this beer. A bit too sweet and no noticable oak flavor.

Pours a nice dark reddish hue with a creamy beige head on top that unfortunately dissipated all too quickly.

Malty sweet aroma with a nice helping of caramel and fruit. Faint hint of wood and vanilla.

Oak character becomes more apparent on the palate with a nice slightly sweet vanilla note. Lots of caramel sweetness from the malts.

Mouthfeel has a wonderfully creamy smooth texture. Really something to be enjoyed.

A coppery amber with a decent off white head. Bits of lacing here and there and good retention. Mild carbonation visible. Smell is full of sweet malt with vanilla and cherries in the back. Oak wafts in and out. Love the big, smooth, amber ale malt taste with a longish wooden dryness. Bitterness is English tea leaf hoppiness with oak and cherry-vanilla notes. A mild sourness faintly lingering as the mild biscuity malt blooms. Crisp carbonation and medium light weight make for excellent drinkability. A creative twist on a standard that is not gimmicky or tricked out. This makes me think about what was available in the days of wooden casks. This may be a resurrection of the flavors of old. I wish this one was on the shelves year round. Nicely done Jim!

Poured from a twelve ounce bottle into a pint glass.

Pours medium dark reddish amber, good foaming, some residual. Sweet malty caramel smell. Strong vanilla smell, woody sweet taste with a smooth gradual finish. The beer trusts the oak to hold the sweetness in check rather than any hop. Finish has a lot of vanilla. Nice blend, good taste, perhaps a bit too sweet - can get cloying.
