Picked this beer up in a "brewmasters selection" variety box at the 1960 and Cutten Spec's. I have never tried a couple of the beers in this series, so I picked it up. Here is the first one:

Appearance: The beer pours a clear amber color with a small tan head of small bubbles that were pretty active and ended up fading back into the beer within about 30 seconds. There was a persistent small ring of foam where the beer meets the glass. There is no lacing left on the glass after drinking.

Aroma: I initially got a nice fresh floral hop aroma that was mixing with some sweet toasty malts that reminded me of an Oktoberfest, so there is quite a bit of Munich malt in this beer. The aroma is moving more toward cara-vienna malt as it is warming up some. The hops are mildly floral, but pretty reserved overall.

Taste: The flavor is much different than the aroma alluded to. The overall mouthfeel is dry and that hits you immediately, and the beer is way more attenuated than the sweetness in the aroma let on. There is hops present in the flavor, in that they give you a pretty good dose of flowers in the beginning of the taste, and end up bittering up the finish quite a bit. Overall the malt is the dominant force in the finish, but not by too much. The carbonation is adequate for what this beer is. It is slightly low, but the beer is pretty dry overall, so this is a good thing.

Opinion: This is an alright beer. I was a bit disappointed between the aroma and the flavor. I was expecting quite a bit more deliverance in the flavor, but it ended up being a well attenuated version of what I was expecting. Overall the beer is pretty light on the palate and pretty drinkable, but not one I would come back to unless it was like the only beer on tap at a pizza joint...then I would probably take it over iced tea or something non-beer like.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a dimpled mug.

The color is a deep orange/gold with a finger of foamy brownish head and some thick lacing left on the glass.

The smell is oaky with some sweet malt flavor that is right behind that nice woody aroma that is right in the nose first. There is a spicy bit of aroma as well and it has a slight caramel flavor.

The taste is big butterscotch and is almost like candy as it comes down. There is some nice sweet honey flavor as well that seems to lay down on the tongue and helps the oak flavor slide down and makes this taste just delicious.

This beer has such a smooth feel that is goes down easy even thought there is a bit of a punch that was not expected. A real jem from Boston Beer.

Pours a nice red/auburn color with a semi-thick head. Nose leaves a bit to be desired, oak is notable, but little else is present. Mouthfeel is somewhat creamy and dries out toward the end. First sip is big malty oak, a little sweet for my taste. Reminiscent in some ways of a pumpkin ale. I tasted touches of vanilla and allspice, but malty oak still dominates the palate. Nothing offensive but nothing inspiring, either. Not a beer I’d go out of my way for.
