Batch #1, poured into a Kirta Halbe stange.
The beer is a bright and clear cherrywood color. The head (under a controlled pour) still reached over a finger in height and threatened much more if desired. A nice wall of lace plasters the glass. Overall a very nice beer to sit and admire from afar.
The aroma is thankfully restrained for a Rauchbier. So few breweries can manage to properly harness a strong smoke flavor/aroma I am happier to see balance than get a nose full of dirty campfire smoke that chokes and stings and hurts the stomach.
White oak and toasty wheat greet you first, and then the aroma turns to a modest helping of caramel and Vienna-esque maltiness. Smooth.
As you take your first sip the beer is at first disappointingly non-smokey. A faint bitterness and odd soapy flavor are the first thing you notice. I sat back and let this guy warm up for ten minutes before going back for more. Now, the flavor has opened up somewhat, showcasing chewy grainy malts and an earthy woody smoke flavor. No meat or gut-wrenching ash here - again Sam Adams has demonstrated their knack for balance. And while this is a quality that is often detrimental in their IPAs, here it is most welcome.
The back of the label calls this a double bock - I'm not sure if the intent was to brew a smokey doppelbock or to just double up on a bock creating a stronger beer (and at 9.45% I'd say they achieved a definite heaftiness). I'd be inclined to assume the later, but the smoke is potent enough to mask some of the nuance that one usually looks for in a true doppelbock. What you are left with is a nice balanced toasty bread flavor along with some caramel and balancing bitterness.
The mouthfeel is smooth and chewy, and the alcohol is very well hidden. The texture of the beer on the palate is a lingering sticky smoked wort flavor.
Overall I am pretty impressed here. I really wanted to like this but after the Baltic IPA I was feeling disenfranchised with the series. What I really wish though is that Sam Adams bottle dated these beers, because I want more Tasman Red but hesitate to fall prey to a months-old bottle with faded hops.
Either way, at $4.99 this is a really affordable bomber and well worth the money spent.

A- pours a dark murky brown with a small creamy off-white head that has good retention after settling
S- smoked sausage, campfire ash, charred wood, birch, caramel & raisin. Pretty much pure smoke with a hint of caramel sweetness
T- big smoky flavors up front; charred woodsy notes, earthy and herbal, spicy. There's a caramel malty sweetness that adds some balance mid-palate. The finish brings more smoke with some peaty flavor
M- medium body and carbonation, creamy mouthfeel leads to a smooth and creamy finish. ABV is brilliantly hidden
O- the smoke is big throughout, making it hard to drink the entire bomber. However it paired nicely with some brick cheese and summer sausage. I think this style is better tackled with some food. Overall, worth a try!

A first batch bottle I'm just now getting around to drink. I'll try to not knock it for any age related issues.
Still an attractive beer. Nice tan head. Cloudy amber browns, pale red body. Sticky dripping lacing
Nice caramel with some smoke, but not excessive. Some oxidation (I at least need to note it). But nice bock aroma's.
Pretty big mouthfeel. Sticky and chewy in a nice lager like way. Good balance of flavors with the bock clearly there and a forthright but not excessive smoke stream. Very rich beer, it will be a little tough to drink the whole thing alone without something to eat to help cut it a bit. Gets all sticky on my teeth.
Enjoyable. Probably best with food.
