L: Pours brilliant chestnut with a slight red tint. Produces a rocky 2” cream colored foam collar that leaves minimal lace.
S: Smoky with a hint of maple bacon
T: Bold smoke, sweet dark sugars, a touch of banana.
F: Chewy with below average carbonation and alcohol warming on the finish.
O: A sweet, big flavor packed beer.

Enjoyed in snifter, this smoked bock pours a brilliant hazy copper with a firm white head and nice lacing. Nose of smoked malts, caramel, raisins, and more smoke. Flavors of sweet caramel up front, very rich, moderate smoke to the aftertaste with figs and raisins. Alcoholic warming and lots of smoke. With age the smoke dissipates, but still pretty strong with a goodly mouth feel, very wet but coating. Decent, big, but decent.

Brilliant clarity, amber, with a frothy cream head that lingers. Aroma is malt dominant, fairly caramelly, almost buttery. I don't get much smoke.

Flavor is much more phenolic and smoke, with deeply caramelly notes. Nice and bready, toasted, caramel malt. On the sweet and smoky side, would go great with bbq.

Body is full, lighter carbonation.

A- pours a dark murky brown with a small creamy off-white head that has good retention after settling

S- smoked sausage, campfire ash, charred wood, birch, caramel & raisin. Pretty much pure smoke with a hint of caramel sweetness

T- big smoky flavors up front; charred woodsy notes, earthy and herbal, spicy. There's a caramel malty sweetness that adds some balance mid-palate. The finish brings more smoke with some peaty flavor

M- medium body and carbonation, creamy mouthfeel leads to a smooth and creamy finish. ABV is brilliantly hidden

O- the smoke is big throughout, making it hard to drink the entire bomber. However it paired nicely with some brick cheese and summer sausage. I think this style is better tackled with some food. Overall, worth a try!

A first batch bottle I'm just now getting around to drink. I'll try to not knock it for any age related issues.
Still an attractive beer. Nice tan head. Cloudy amber browns, pale red body. Sticky dripping lacing
Nice caramel with some smoke, but not excessive. Some oxidation (I at least need to note it). But nice bock aroma's.
Pretty big mouthfeel. Sticky and chewy in a nice lager like way. Good balance of flavors with the bock clearly there and a forthright but not excessive smoke stream. Very rich beer, it will be a little tough to drink the whole thing alone without something to eat to help cut it a bit. Gets all sticky on my teeth.
Enjoyable. Probably best with food.

Poured form a 650 ml bottle into a mug.

A: Medium brown. Pours a 1 finger, foamy, brown-white head. Dissipates fairly quickly, leaving a smattering of bubbles on the surface. No real lacing.

S: Roasted malt, liquid smoke, and bacon.

T: Smoked malt grains, licorice, peat, and some indistinct sweet component I just can't place.

M: Hearty, but shallow feeling. Has kind of synthetic, made in a lab, sweet/bitter thing going on. Peaty aftertaste. Kind of off-putting.

D: Sipping experience. Mine was, it was decent enough, but a 12 ounce serving would have been plenty.

Atmosphere is okay. Nice foamy head, but no real lacing. Nose is roasty and bacony. Malt grains, smoked in peat, balanced with bitter and some odd sweetness. Overall, this is an okay quaff.

bomber 22 oz. bottle poured into 22 oz. glass, head meant not enough room for entire serving.

appearance - dark brown, little light passed through the poured clear glass. A mildly careful but fast angled pour yielded a 3/4 inch tan (very light at top, medium khaki at the bottom) head, a little lace as the beer was drank. Most beers would have yielded more head if I were to pour them this fast.

smell - I could get technical, but really, it smells like a bock, or more like a doppelbock/doublebock.

taste - see smell notes. It tastes like other good bocks and doppelbocks/doublebocks. The high alcohol content wasn't tasted though; it went down easily enough that I thought it was weaker.

mouthfeel - thick, but not real heavy. To say silky would be too light, to say more like satin would still be light. People think of fabrics for some reason... Imagine a gel-filled computer keyboard wrist rest with a satin outer surface. In other words, smooth with some but not a lot of weight. My beer vocabulary sucks, but this is what's in my head when I think of this beer's mouthfeel.

overall - This is a good bock that tastes like a good doppelbock/doublebock. The large bottle and high abv got me buzzed. I am incapable of dazzling you with expert tasting notes, but I can at least say, it's a really good bock, and worth the price I paid.

great brew. High ABV and you can definetely taste it. I have not had any true Rauchbiers but this one tastes like a great cross betweens SA doublebock and Wee Heavy, which I freaking love. The smoke is there, not overpowering like in a wee heavy but enough to give the beer a nice flavor. I let this brew sit out 1 hour before I drank it and it was very tasty.

22 oz bottle poured into pilsener glass. This was my first rauchbier, and was excited to try it. In actuality, it's more of a hybrid, I guess it's considered a "smoked doppelbock". Am a huge doppelbock fan, so I happily grabbed some.

A - Pours almost entirely brown, with just a shade of red. Shines a deep red-brown in the light. Thick, 3-finger head developed, was a tannish color. Excellent looking beer.

S - Lot's of malt up front, as well as roasted characters. A strong aroma of cocoa is present, and just a hint of smokiness.

T - Great tasting beer. All the aromas are noted in the taste, especially the malt and cocoa. The smoky taste is definitely noticeable, but not in an overpowering way. I think it really compliments the strong bock taste. This beast is 9.5% ABV, so a small amount of alcohol heat was noticed in the aftertaste. Not unpleasant, and actually went well with the wings I was eating.

F - It's a bock, so it's thick and can be tough on the stomach. Not a bad feeling beer, and it paired well with wings, and I'd imagine with most good flavored food. Not something I'd want to chug, but that's how it is w/ bock's.

O - A pretty darn good beer. I really view this more as a doppelbock w/ some smoke rather than a Rauch. Very suprised it's ranked as low as it is. Not quite as good as Sam Adams' Double Bock, but it's still a quality beer. Lot's of taste, lot's of power, and pairs well with food. Highly recommend for any fans of bocks/doppelbocks or extreme beers.

Poured from a 1pt, 6oz standard pressure-cap bottle into a conic pint glass in high elevation Kalispell, Mont. Quite a big bottle. Reviewed live.

A- Three finger cream-colored head with rapidly eroding retention. Lasts about a minute and a half. Sinks down to a half-finger floater with some creamy lacing. Dark orange color with low clarity. Semi-hazy.

S- Bacon, smoke. Smells like breakfast. Typical Rauch smell.

T- Smoky, caramel malts. Some booze. Not bad. Not good.

M- Wet and thicker bodied.

O- Kind of a miss on this one. Not special.

Looking great with three fingers of tan head on a cloudy, reddish brown colored body.
The aroma has a lot of smoke and a little anise and black licorice. Nice if you like that.
The taste is quite sweet all the way through, a touch of smoke with burnt wood middle to end, fairly complex with good balance.
The texture is soft, slightly sticky with low to moderate carbonation.
Pretty good overall, but a bit too sweet for my taste. I enjoyed the smoke though.

smell - smokey, bacon-y, leathery, skin of the potato....y

apearence, red/brownish, almost like a killian

taste - sweet, like alot of bocks to me

mouthfeel - too sweet, smooth, smokey

overall - not bad, but one and done. Not a session beer to me.

Its my first beer into the drinking session. Its great starter. Possibly even better with food like a salty cheese or a salty meat, like pepporoni or salami. Overall its sweetness kills me for making me drink more than one in a session. Would buy again.

Poured into ceramic stein. Allowed head to develop and stayed for a good while.

Pours a ruddy, cloudy red. Huge head of off-white bubbles. Stunning, detailed, frilly lace.

Nose is lively smoky bacon, with notes of salted meat and woody goodness. Wow.

Taste is similar, but heavier on the malty bock side. I get some of the woody, cured-meat flavor, but with a heftier sweetness on the palate than I was hoping for. Finishes woody and warming.

Overall, a curious and unique melding of styles, but not of the caliber as the Schlenkerla rauchbiers.

Purchased in 2012 - pours a brown light coffee color with not much of a head. Tastes nutty and toffee flavors with thick coating aftertaste. Not the most pleasant on smell, taste or aftertaste.
Overall: I probably wouldn't buy it again but sometimes the Sam single bottles are surprisingly good. Just not this one

Samuel Adams Cinder Bock is a very clear, dense, copper beer with a soft, fluffy, yellowed foam that has great staying power. It's mostly smoke in the aroma, but a tart malt is detected as well. It smells a touch sweet. It's very full bodied and smooth with a creamy, chewy finish. The flavor is much like the the aroma: smoke and tart malt. There's a slightly sweet, herbal flavor that's somewhere between cola and a cough drop. Smoke is the dominant flavor here. When combined with the malt, it comes off as umami. There's a sort of salmiakki aftertaste. This is reasonably bold and complex. It's a sipping beer with a lot of character. There are subtleties to it, but the overall flavor is quite bold.

22oz bottle served in a Allagash cervoise glass

Batch - 1

A - Dark brown tea colored body with 2 fingers of yellowish tan head. Bubbles are fine and stick to the glass quite well. Excellent retention for such a high abv.

S - Toasted bread, faint smokiness in the background, some fruity yeast wrapped in a hefty malt bill, toasted caramel, smokey molasses, candied bacon

T - Sweet upfront followed by salty caramel, molasses, brown bread, sticky dried dark fruits, smoke is very faint is only an accent to the strong malt base. Finishes sticky, nutty, and sweet.

M - Full bodied, creamy carbonation, sweet rich finish.

Sweeter than expected. Wish the smoke showed up a bit more. It needed another balancing component to combat the malts. Drinks very easy for such a high ABV. I would have never have guessed his to be ABV 9.4.
Not sure how old this is but I think batch - 1's smoke has faded.

A- This beer pours a dense light caramel hued body with a raging carbonation of big bubbles supporting a rocky head of light tan.

S- The mellow cloth band aid aroma has some brown sweet malt notes to follow.

T- The big band aid and salty bacon flavored smoke taste stains the tongue with some slight sweetness in the finish taking on some salty sweet brown malt notes as it opens.

M- The medium mouthfeel has a gentle carbonation and no real alcohol

O- If I have to taste band aids this is the least offensive of the kinds but it grows stronger and stronger with each sip. I think there is a tasty beer in this bottle with nice hints of malt sweetness but it is well hidden in the loud salty bacon, band aid flavors. It was a bit to rough to finish.

A: Pours a clear mahogany color with a fair amount of tan head. A spotty thin layer retains, which is enough to leave reasonable walls of lacing.

S: Smoky resin sweetness; it's deeply sweet, hinting at the ABV, but is nowhere near boozy.

T: Not much smoke. Sweet, and full flavored, with nice complexity. There's enough smoke and hop flavors to keep the sweetness from going out of control.

M: Full body, medium carbonation.

Overall, pretty good. It's also dangerously drinkable for nearly 10%.

Appearance: dark red glow, one finger width head, good carbonation

Smell: dark caramel, smoked peat

taste: strong peat with roasted caramel and even slight floral hop with bite.

Mouthfeel: nice malt aroma with peat

Overall: I really liked this beer. I actually happen to like peat smoked beer and it is very hard to find and this beer has a good balance of smoked peat and a caramelized malt that I love. I would buy again if I can find it.

Poured from bomber into a strange glass

Appearance- Pours a lightly hazed light brown/copper color with a thick three finger cream colored head. The head has a great level of retention, slowly fading to leave a medium level of lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell- The smell is smoky and roasty with notes of sweetness. A roasted malt and lightly burnt aroma is mixed with smoke and nuts and a sweet smell of molasses and caramel.

Taste – The taste begins with a bready and roasted malt flavor. It initially has only a light caramel sweetness, but toward the middle and the end the caramel grows stronger in nature with it being joined by some brown sugar flavors as well. A smoke flavor starts out the taste quite strong only to fade in the middle of the taste and reemerge later at the end of the taste with greater intensity. With the increase in sweetness and smoke toward the end of the taste so too comes a light nutty flavor and a slight warming alcohol flavor. When all flavors are combined in the end, they leaves a pleasant warming toasty sweet flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel- The body of the beer is quite chewy and thick complimenting quite nicely all the roasted, smoke, and nut flavors of the brew. The carbonation level also suited most of the flavors quite nicely as it was on the lower side with it enhanced both the thickness of the body as well as created a more warming feel when combined with the alcohol flavors of the brew.

Overall – This is a rather enjoyable brew. It has a good blend of toast, smoke, sweet, nut and booze with a chewy and thick body that suits the flavors rather nicely.

I poured this beer into a glass, it has a red amber color body with a 2' tan creamy head to it. The aroma is of a smoky, malty ness to it. The taste has a rich deep smoke flavor followed by a sweetness malt on the back of the tongue. The mouth feel is bold and full, it grips the taste bud very well with the smokyness and sweetness. Overall this is a really good beer, great flavor and balance. Great job Saumel adams.

A: The beer is dark reddish amber in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a finger high beige colored head that died down and left a thin film of bubbles covering the surface and a collar of large bubbles around the edge of the glass.
S: There are light to moderately aromas of smoked malts in the nose.
T: Similar to the smell, the taste has lots of smoky flavors along with some hints of the underlying caramel malts. There are some hints of sweetness.
M: It feels medium- to full-bodied and a little thick on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer definitely feels somewhat filling (like a doppelbock) but manages to hide its alcohol extremely well. It's a good selection if you want something that is like a meal in itself but isn't too smoky.

Boston Beer has an interesting brew with Cinder Bock, a heavily smoked lager of nearly triple bock strength. The smoke, fire, and caramel malt elements are strong in the beer, but so is the ethanol, limiting the enjoyment of this beer. While I enjoyed the Cinder Bock, I found the ethanol too dominant in the taste, despite being remarkably absent from the aroma. If this were toned down a bit, I would happily check this beer out again; as it stands, I'm glad I tried it, but would probably return to something more balanced from Schlenkerla for a rauchbier fix.

Pours a substantial 2.5cm tall head of beige to light tan foam, composed of small bubbles that make up a fairly dense-looking combination. Head retention is about average, lasting a minute or slightly longer, fading to a thick ring around the glass with a large island of wispy foam capping the body on the center of the glass. The lacing left is good, if a bit patchy, with thick lines and dots left sporadically along the walls of the glass. Body is a dark brown to very dark copper, with light bringing out orange-brown hues. Body is hazy, nearly opaque from suspended yeast, with carbonation visible streaming along the center and sides of the glass.

Aroma is of beechwood-smoked malt, substantial caramel-like malt sweetness, with a bit of barbecue sauce and very slight hints of chocolate. Very deep, rich, and rather pleasing, the hearty bock components of this beer work well with the complex smokiness.

Front of palate is gently smoky, with rich caramel malts and a touch of milk chocolate. Mid-palate is substantially smoky from the malts, which is richly enhanced by the deep caramel-like malt sweetness. Barbecue sauce aspect adds some tanginess from molasses-vinegar analogues. As the beer warms, ethanol becomes somewhat apparent here, detracting from the other flavors. Back of palate notices spicy ethanol, particularly when the beer is warmer, along with a bit of pepperiness, more modest smoked malt, campfire/smoke, and barbecue sauce-like tanginess. Aftertaste is of barbecue sauce tanginess with smoked malt, campfire, lingering sweetness, and ethanol.

Beer is heavy in body, with carbonation of medium intensity, leading to a slightly fizzy mouthfeel that foams up quickly, leading to a latter-half feel that is smooth and somewhat creamy. Ethanol can be felt in the nostrils and back of throat, which is somewhat disappointing given the malt intensity in this beer.

Sweet smokiness all the way through from the nose through the taste, like backyard barbeque brisket that’s been smoking under coats of sauce all day. Nice creamy head, deep red color. Not a taste I’d want all the time but a good beer in that style. Sweetens dramatically as it warms.

A clear red colored beer with a medium sized tan colored head.

Sweet and nutty bock with some smoke and medicine aromas. Reminds me a bit of smoked almonds. Good but not overpowering smoke aroma.

Starts out sweet and smoky. Slight sourness and a decent amount of bitterness. Sweetness is almost too much, but there is enough hop and smoke to keep it in check. Alcohol is well hidden but you can feel it in your chest..

Mouthfeel is very full.

Overall, good beer but it could be a little less sweet.
