This beer pours black...but wait!?! Hold the tumbler up to the day-lit window and what you see is an extremely dark, but transparent chestnut red. Beautiful. The head is a thick and frothy two finger beige, whose variation in bubble size reminds me of rapidly cooking pancake batter. The head fades quickly, but ultimately leaves exceptional lacing.
The nose is confronted by a bitter hop as the cap is removed. After settling into the glass smells of smokey malt, chocolate and coffee present themselves. With increased sniff work additional hop can be revealed.
Once tasted I nearly threw myself for a loop! Bitter grapefruit and floral flavors bombarded my taste buds with the ferocity of an Imperial IPA...wow! I did not expect that! A second sip and slight presence of malt and chocolate nibs reside in the finish.
Mouthfeel is smooth and mellow to the tongue, with a moderate dryness in the aftertaste.
Overall, if I were to attempt to explain this bizarre brew, I'd say it smells like a porter but tastes like an Imperial IPA. Strange, but intriguing. Although it wasn't my favorite ale from Boston Brewing, I certainly had no problem finishing off the full bomber. It was a good beer, and worthy of further investigation by any hop lover.

What a great beer. Very smooth creamy mouthfeel. Nice lacing in the glass. Lighter on carbonation which i prefer. Sweet malty caramel somewhat smokey taste. Usually reasonably priced too. I am not sure why this beer isn't rated higher but who cares? Its damn good and can drink this all day.
