12oz bottle 1 of 3 different beers from the Sam Adams Longshot American Homebrew Contest 6-pack. Poured into my Sam Adams glass.

A- Pours an opague pitch black like motor oil. About two and half fingers of foamy mocha colored head that leaves nice layered mocha lacing and fades to about a finger of head. No visible carbonation bubbles, just a black hole of pitch blackness.

S- Dark chocolate, a little bit of Espresso, hints of vanilla and roasted malts, maybe a tiny bit of hops mixed in there.

T- Creamy milk chocolate, hints of roasted malts, finishes with a milky sweetness with a hint of a bitter hop taste.

M- Creamy and velvety, milky smooth, a little bit on the heavy side, alcohol very hard to detect, well balanced.

O- This was the first beer that I tried from the Sam Adams Longshot Home Brewing Contest 6-pack. I bought this last year and in my opinion it is one of the best deals you can get- for $8.99 for a 6-pack of 3 different great beers. In my opinion this beer definitely lived up to my expectations of the beers from last year.

This beer looked great from the first pour. I loved the smooth velvety mouthfeel mixed with a great balance of milky/dark chocolate and slight taste of bitter hops mixed in the background. The abv is perfectly mixed in and is tough to detect at it's hefty 8.9%. Out of all the imperial stouts I've had this probably ranks among the best of them. I definitely recommend picking up some, I wish they made 6-packs of this stuff. I probably like it better then just about anything else Sam Adams makes. Not sure why the other reviewers didn't rate this higher. Sure it's not the most complex beer, but sometimes in my opinion simpler is better.

2013 longshots,
I poured this beer into a glass, it has black body with a small tanbb head. The aroma has a roasty, chocolate smell. The taste is of roasted, chocolate, malt. As it warms up i get some dark fruit notes also. The mouthfeel is good and overall a good ris.

Appearance - impressive pour, inky and oily. A fat finger of dark mocha foam sets up and hangs around a while, hanging some thick lace on the glass. Melts back a little fast but still holding on a solid cover.

Aroma - darkly roasted malt, bittersweet chocolate. maybe not as layered as some others but an excellent presentation of the primary I.S. elements.

Taste - big and roasty, dark and delicious. Notes of currant, fig, espresso, black cherry skins. The abv is melded without coming across hot or intrusive.Finishes with dry, gritty cocoa powder and drying sweetness.

Mouthfeel - not as heavy as some, but enough heft to hold its own. Carbonation is lively but a little overwhelmed by the smooth body.

Overall - one of the best Longshots yet. One more bottle, at least a year or two until that one pops.

Black. One of the darkest heads I've ever seen on a beer. Excellent retention with thick foam clinging to the glass. Aromas of sweet milk chocolate and roast, caramel and bittersweet chocolate, faint alcohol and light hops. Moderate citrusy bitterness, sort of sweet with chocolate and caramel, licorice and roast, lingering bittersweet character. Full to heavy in body, kind of thick, lowish carbonation, creamy and a bit warm with mild astringency. Pretty good overall. There were a lot of nice flavours here, but left the impression that there could have been more depth.

Vintage 2012 bottle. Poured into a balloon glass.
Inky black color, with a big head of chocolate milkshake foam.
Aroma-Coffee, dark chocolate
Taste-Roasty, dark malt, rich chocolate notes. Very smooth for 8.9ABV. Complex. Very enjoyable, and a fine effort. A nice match for BBQ or as a dessert brew.

LOOK: Pours a midnight black with a tan silky froth that leaves plenty of lace on the snifter. No sediment, this bottle has been fridge aged for over a year now. Appears like an imperial stout.

SMELL: Big and roasty, with a woodsy aroma that is intriguing and expressive.

TASTE: Smooth and surprisingly mild flavors of roast, oats, coffee and some fruity notes. Has some earthy, dirty flavor to it as well as alluding to suggestions of wood, though I don't believe this is an oak aged brew. As it warms notes of chocolate dial in.

FEEL: Full bodied, very smooth, velvety feel.

OVERALL: A good American Double Stout, pleasing to sip on, and gets better as it warms slightly. This makes for a nice sipper on a rainy spring evening.

(Served in a snifter)
A- The inky jet black body supports a cocoa tan head of cream that takes on an espresso crema being thick and lasting.

S- The earthy slightly fruity dark chocolate malt aroma has some leather notes mixed in and gives is a good depth.

T- The big roasted coco notes has a natural tootsie roll malt flavor with a prune hint in the finish. There are some dark mellow roasted malt flavors that linger just a moment without any bitterness.

M- The medium mouthfeel has a spicy little carbonation but no real alcohol heat.

O- This beer has a well-blended depth of dark malt and some good yeast character making it a very nice beer to sip several in a row.

I've had 2 bottles of this sitting in my beer cellar for almost a year now, as I got 2 bottles as part of the 6 pack of last year's Longshot series that I picked up. So I figured it was time to crack one open. A 12 oz. bottle poured into my snifter, this beer pours a very dark brown color with a mocha brown creamy looking head that is about an inch thick when poured. Head settles to a nice surface coating of foam that sits on the surface of the beer along with a nice medium to thick size ring lining the inside of the glass. Excellent lacing here too! Aromas of cocoa nibs, roasted nuttyness, a hint of coffee, and bits of dark fruity esters. Has a nice sweetness of cocoa nibs upfront that gives way to some roasted nuttyness and coffee, hints of vanilla, bits of dark fruityness, and is all rounded out with a slight touch of hop bitterness. Excellent mix of different flavors and a good balance of the different flavors. Has a creamy, smooth, frothy, velvety medium to full bodied mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. An excellent beer! One of the best from the Longshot series I have had so far!

Eric
