One thing that has lingered since Sam Adams proved my gateway into craft beer has been my love for the Longshot Series. Super stoked to snag a six pack!

A: Pours a wonderfully clear, dark, ruby brown color. Two fingers of light brown head that recedes to a half finger but lingers nicely. Pretty good lacing. Really like the color on this one.

S: Not what I was expecting. Lots of green apple, citrus, bready malt, brown sugar, and hints of other dark fruit - cherry, plum.

T: Follows the nose exactly. Apple skin, biscuity malt, citrus zest, and molasses. Nice roasted quality on this one. Party foul on the finish though as booziness becomes very apparent. Hot finish.

M: Medium body, slightly thick and very sweet. Pretty nice balance between malt, hop, and residual sugar. A bit boozy, but good.

O: I'm liking it. A malty, hoppy, and sweet beer with all kinds of interesting spice notes. The drawback is that it is rather boozy, but not so bad for 9.3%. I enjoyed this and will definitely enjoy my second bottle soon.

Poured into a snifter.

A: Pours a Cola colored brown with ruby red highlights. Has a short tan head that leaves a creamy topping and spotty lacing. Moderate-heavy carbonation and excellent clarity.

N: Chocolate covered banana, caramelized brown sugar and honey.

T: Molasses, banana, caramelized brown sugar and fig upfront. Mid-palate brings in biscuity bread, chocolate banana, prune juice and sweet honey. Finishes with some earth, hints of bitter dark chocolate, a dab of pleasant booze and perhaps some hay.

M: Full bodied, velvety and incredibly smooth.

O: Big, sugary and candy-like with a lot of caramel, honey, banana and some dark fruit. The alcohol is well hidden in this one and surprisingly smooth for 9.3%. This is a nicely done Sticke Alt and a quality entree into the Longshot series.

A - Pours a dark garnet red color with a sticky lacing ring and barely to no carbonation.

S - Candied figs, plums, roasted toffee. The aroma reminds me of some barley wines that I've had in the past. Sweet, sugary, and malty in the nose with a little bit of booze effervescence.

T - Very malty throughout with dark fruit, mostly plums and candy figs. Mainly sweet throughout with a small amount of grapefruit bitterness and orange sweetness buried really down in there. The finish leaves a coating of toffee, grapefruit, and oranges in the mouth.

M - Thick and full bodied, sticky, viscous, and alcohol warming in the throat.

O - Always enjoyed the creativity of the Longshot series. If Sam Adams were to bottle this one outside of the Longshot competition, I would buy it.

Poured into a 13 oz tulip glass. Pours a ruby red, with a one inch off white head, that leaves plenty of lacing all over the place. Smell banana bread, clove, carmel, nutmeg, and a hint of pine. Taste is all of that with clove and banana bread dominant, with some piny hops blended in the finish. Body is medium large, nice amount of life, fairly lush, and for its large ABV amazingly approachable. This is nice and unique. Reminds me of Long Trail Triple Bag.

All dudes in this years Longshot pack. Thanks for the extra sausage with my beer.

Clear copper color, dark ruby when held to light. Creamy layer of ecru head. Consistent blanket of retention leaves a foamy slug trail.

Grapefruit hops and nutty, sticky sweet hard candy malt. A lil' dark bread.

Smooth and creamy. Nutty bread crust with earthy citrus in back and plenty of alcohol all over.

A sticke alt is one of my least favorite styles but a pretty good one based on previous encounters.

12oz bottle into a New Belgium goblet.

I love the Sticke Alt style--brewed it a few times myself and wish more American brewers would attempt it. Let's see how this Longshot fares. Great-looking pour. The head crackles as it dwindles to a thin veil of khaki foam and ring of bubbles. Beneath, the body is a vivid tawny red hue when held to the light. A deep chestnut brown otherwise. The aroma is...a bit like hop and alcohol perfume. Quite fragrant, with a sweet malty character that suggests molasses, while the hybrid ale yeast throws off some intense fruity notes of fig and plum. Maybe a quick whiff of nail polish, but it's not too noticeable.

Yum...that's tasty. I can see why this recipe won! Chewy, sticky-sweet malts add a backbone of sweetbread and caramel, while yeasty fruit esters of browned apple flesh and a leafy hop bitterness balance it all nicely. The alcohol is present, but not at all distracting, and warms the back of the palate nicely with each sip. Body is medium-thick, but finishes clean and crisp like an Altbier should. Overall, an excellent interpretation of the style. Prost!

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a Sam Adams pint.

A: Pours a deep, translucent copper color with 1/2 finger of pale tan head. Good retention and lace.

S: Bubblegum and a little banana. Bit of a doppelbock impression, though it's an ale.

T: More bubblegum and banana. Flavors are rich and deep. Bit of metal on the finish hurts the overall impression, but it fades somewhat after the first few sips.

M: Medium body, smooth and creamy.

O: A nice beer. Always like the creativity and variety of the Longshot series. I just wish the metal weren't there.
