A: deep burgundy brown with frothy head that retreats into ample lacing - I believe a traditional sahti has such a color

S: malts and herb - predictably, the juniper, and maybe some woodsy notes

T: makes me think of a barleywine with the sweetness replaced by an herbal, earthy flavor - aspects of it are medicinal, with some flavors I associate with yeast and hops, but darker and with a nice bitterness

M: medium body, nice carbonation, teensy bit of astringency, but it suits the herbal nature of the brew

O: look, I've only tried 2 sahtis - this one and Dogfish Head's, and both admittedly took some liberties with the traditional formulation - I really liked the bright, light craft of the DFH Sah'tea, and was ready for this to fall short, but it doesn't - it's clearly just a darker take on the same idea, and not-for-nothing, I think this may be more representative of a traditional sahti. I would definitely buy this again, and would love to do a side-by-side.

Batch No. 1: Pours a hazy red amber color with a foamy 1 finger light tan head that was full of bubbles and faded about average to on the slower side, leaving OK spotty lacing and rings as it went down. The second half of the bottle pored much darker and was chestnut brown in color.

Smells of caramel, dark fruit like a cherry, sweet candy or brown sugar, malt, orange peel, toffee and light funk. There are earthy notes that smell like a twig or pine cone, but the nose is basically sweet and malty with the caramel really showing through.

Tastes like it smells, but with a lot more floral and herbal notes, almost like a blast of pine cone or Pine-Sol and dry flower petals or thyme. The flavor is sweet, but also earthy and slightly bitter like dry hops and spruce tips were floating in the brew. An odd mix of caramel, dark fruit, candy sugar, malt, orange peel, yeast funk, sour apple, pine cone, tree bark and herbs; I assume the Juniper berry tastes like the smell, so I guess that is noticeable having never tasted a Juniper berry. Seems like a traditional Scottish beer with the heavy pine cone and spruce earthy notes which took away from the initial sweetness.

Mouthfeel is chewy and thick, with a sugary sweetness that gives way to an herbal earthy dryness, with very mild and almost flat carbonation. Too strange to drink as a session beer, it is a nice nostalgic experiment that hides the ABV well but just doesn’t taste very good.

Sahti is a style I don’t know much about, but if this is a good representation then I may avoid it as I’d much rather be drinking a stout or IPA. The Vikings may have enjoyed it, but with the current craft beer movement I’d rather spend my time on better styles.

Me and my friend were required to brew a Sahti for a home brew competition we were entering, so we saw this on the shelf and decided to give it a try. I must say I was pleasantly surprised as I thought this beer was going to be awful. It pours in a dark gold murky color that is somewhere in between good and ugly. I really did not like the smell it was funky as hell. Medium-low head which is actually too much head for this style which is supposed to be served flat. Taste was of malty juniper with maybe a little spice from some rye grain. It was surprisingly refreshing and left a clean feeling in your mouth. This beer goes down super easy for something with a 7% ABV. There are some subtle hops detected, i think a noble verity, which I enjoyed and obviously increased the shelf life but again traditionally there is supposed to be no hops and the beer drank within a month after it is brewed, but I realize that would be a money losing endeavor for anywhere outside Finland. Also I think the flavor got better as the beer warmed. Give this beer a try it is totally different and pretty good.
