Clear, deep mahogany body allows the active carbonation levels to take center stage. Respectable beige head hangs around for awhile before fading to a thin ring and leaving light lacing behind.
Hazelnut through and through. Light chocolate and english toffee notes sneak in. It's simple and effective.
Honestly, you really need look no further than the aroma notes... Clean hazelnut, with light toasted peaty character. Chocolate is noticeable, but just barely.
A bit thin, but creamy and easy to drink. Clean finish even a bit zesty.
I was caught completely caught off guard with this one. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Easy to drink, tasty (so long as you enjoy hazelnut), and a super smooth body make this a fantastic. I found this in a sampler and have not seen it in its own sixer which is a bit disappointing - this deserves a slot on the shelf all to itself. At this point, I should probably mention the enjoy by date on the botte is January. I'm reviewing in Febuary. I can't wait to get my hands on this and see hw much better it will be "brewery fresh!"

12 ounce bottle with best before dating notched on the side of the label.
Pours typical brownish amber, khaki head, stays a bit and leaves spotty lace.
Caramel and nuts all over the sniff.
Nutty, malty and quite tasty brown ale. Lots of carramel on the tongue and well into the finish. Malts carry the weight. Nice rounded mouthfeel. Enjoyable ABA

Appearance: 3/4 inch head, brown in color, clear, high carbonation
Smell: hazelnut and toasted malt
Taste: cocoa powder, hazelnut, and light toffee
Mouthfeel: sweet with light earthiness, medium carbonation, medium-light bodied
Overall: Solid brown ale. I love the taste of the cocoa, although I wish there was more hazelnut. I think this is my favorite of the current fall pack.

The beer pours a clear, dark brown color with an off-white head. The aroma is full of toffee and some hazelnut character. The flavor is very similar. There is a good amount of sweet chocolate and toasted nuts, as well as a hint of toffee and caramel. The beer is very sweet and has no real hop character to it. I also get a light hint of mint, but that may be my imagination. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Purchased in the fall combo pack. Poured a thick, but not cloudy, very nice and dark brown. The head is tan-ish white and the small bubble head, about 1/32 inch, stayed there for five minutes.
The smell is malt and hazel. I could not smell hops, but I know other reviewers did. The hazel did not smell overpowering, but it bordered on strong.
The taste is malt at the tip of the tongue, with hazel rolling over the rest of the tongue. I did not get any hop/bitter until I swallowed, and then it was a faint bitter.
The overall effect after you swallow is meh. It just wasn't the good where you keep the glass in your hand for the next taste.
The look is great, the smell is pretty good, and it is down hill from there.
Thinking as I finish this, has anyone tried eating it with chocolate bars or chocolate cream pie? Just an idea, I have not because I thought of it too late.

Poured from a bottle into a Sam Adams Glass.
Appearance: Brown, with a beige head of about two fingers.
Smell: Nutty, malts, hazel nuts, maybe some coffee??
Mouthfeel/Taste: Smooth, almost creamy texture, medium bodied. Taste of a heavy brown ale with hazel nuts and other nuts, roasted malts and again maybe some coffee?
Overall: Almost drank more like a porter or stout, not really my type of beer, did not care for this one at all. Although I can see how other would enjoy this brew.

A - nice opaque brown. Small bubbly head, decent lacing, attractive enough but doesn't scream drink me.
S - oh the smell. Oh my God the smell. It smells like hazelnut
Lots of hazel nut. I got some good coffee and toffee aromas mixed in there. I could smell this all day long.
T - this is hazelnut coffee in beers clothing. Good sweet hazelnut flavor mixed with a balance of bitterness and solid malt flavors. The hazelnut tastes so good that I honestly didn't care what else was in here. Hazelnut. Yes. I found no offensive flavors in this beer.
M - the body wasn't too full or too light, nice and easy on the palate. Medium carbonation. Just right.
O - I really love Sam Adams beer. But I do often get dissapointed with some of the beer choices in the seasonal collections. Not this fall. The 2012 harvest collection trumps the 2011 collection hands down. This is a perfect addition to their fall lineup and I hope it stays for years to come.

12oz bottle at fridge temp poured into a snifter. best before FEB.
pours out a nice clear deep chestnut brown color with a nice off white to light tan head, good retention with a little lacing.
wow, very nice aroma, roasted hazelnuts, pecans, very aromatic. some caramel and maybe even a bit of chocolate creeps in there.
again, very nice roasted nut flavors, reminiscent of all kinds of different nuts, especially pecans and hazelnuts. some bready caramel malt really brings things home.
the only flaw i find is maybe too light off a mouthfeel, but thats maybe expected considering its just a brown ale and one from sam adams non the less.
a solid beer, good nutty flavors without going overboard. hard to tell if the flavors come from authentic ingredients or not, but still... kudos to sam adams.

Poured from 12 oz. bottle into a Sam Adams "Perfect Pint" glass.
Appearance: Pours a dark brown with some hints of amber orange. Lots of rising bubbles and a huge five finger off white head with good retention. Leaves a lot of creamy lacing around the glass.
Smell: A sweet aroma that is fairly roasted and nutty. Toasted malts with hints of toffee, burnt caramel, hazelnuts, roast chocolate, coffee, and biscuit. Some brown sugar and hints of cream. Some earthy noble hops add some spice in the background. A pretty sweet smell with a lot of roasted and toasted elements.
Taste: Like the smell, a sweet taste of dark malts and nuts. Toasted and roasted malts with a taste of toffee, caramel, chocolate, hazelnuts, creamy lactose, coffee, oat, and bready biscuit. A fair amount of brown sugar. A little spicy bitterness in the back end from some noble hops. Tastes on the sweet side but not too syrupy. Pretty tasty.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate level of carbonation. Very creamy. Somewhat slick. Very smooth.
Overall: A pretty nice version of a brown ale. The hazelnuts add a nice kick and the sweetness is kept well in balance.
