The brown in this brown ale is clear and watery in appearance, weak and absent of a needed richness. The head though is thick, foamy, massed well and laced tremendously.

The color may have had a weakness but the rich, robust tones are definitely in the aroma. Huge hazelnut presence is coupled to a thick, rich caramel and toffee scent. Very creamy in the nose there's a hint of marshmallow.

This is really good! Maybe it's just up my beer alley but I get loads of chocolate, caramel, toffee, creamy marshmallow and a hint of hazelnut. It almost seems artificial the tastes are so strong.

One complaint is the feel. With the rich creamy tones in scent and taste I have an expectation of a similar feel but instead get a loose carbonated tone. Very interesting experience from AS, but taste rules out here.

Not a huge SA fan, bought the mixed twelve pack on a whim. This was the highlight of the pack. The nuttiness was just right and blended with the other flavors perfectly. The octoberfest was ok, as was the ipa, but this one was just right. Would buy a sixer of this for sure. Solid brew.

Purchased in the fall combo pack. Poured a thick, but not cloudy, very nice and dark brown. The head is tan-ish white and the small bubble head, about 1/32 inch, stayed there for five minutes.

The smell is malt and hazel. I could not smell hops, but I know other reviewers did. The hazel did not smell overpowering, but it bordered on strong.

The taste is malt at the tip of the tongue, with hazel rolling over the rest of the tongue. I did not get any hop/bitter until I swallowed, and then it was a faint bitter.

The overall effect after you swallow is meh. It just wasn't the good where you keep the glass in your hand for the next taste.

The look is great, the smell is pretty good, and it is down hill from there.

Thinking as I finish this, has anyone tried eating it with chocolate bars or chocolate cream pie? Just an idea, I have not because I thought of it too late.

Poured from a bottle into a Sam Adams glass

A: Bownish Amber, started off with a pinky sized head that diminished into about a quarter of that size. Beer is clear with moderate carbonation.

S: Malty, roasted nuts, caramel, toffee, sweet. A very pleasant and subtle smelling beer.

T: Well balanced. No bitter aftertaste, malty, hint of sugar, toffee, caramel, and has a nutty aftertaste.

M: Clean, no strong aftertaste, smooth, minimal alcohol taste.

O: Very smooth and tasty beer. Easy to drink and has enough flavor to drink several at once. Definitely enjoyed this one.

Dark chestnut-brown. A couple fingers of foam cap it. Pretty nice head retention, while the clingy foam leaves some nice lacing. Nutty aroma of hazelnut is immediately apparent. Otherwise, this is generally malty on the nose with a trace of roast character. As long as you're a fan of hazelnuts, you'll probably find this to be nicely aromatic.

Flavor features a strong note of hazelnut upfront then segues into a mild bitterness. Hop bitterness holds up well amidst an otherwise malty flavor profile. Kind of lifeless toward the finish, as the initial rush of flavor fades to black. Mouthfeel takes a hit due to carbonation that's somewhat harsh, taking a while to settle down.

Broadly similar to Rogue's Hazelnut Brown Nectar. If this were offered in six-packs, I'd probably pick it up every once in a while, and it would be a solid value alternative to the aforementioned Rogue offering. As it stands, it's a worthy addition to the Fall seasonal pack.
