A-Lighter brown with a thin cap. Head is sandy tan. Head leaves very mild lacing freckles. Body of the beer is clear.

S-Yeah! Clear hazelnut component in the nose. Molasses and brown sugar sweep in. A little coffee too which of course comes out as hazelnut coffee. Maybe some other mixed nuts too.

T-Hazelnut again. Deep sweetness and light breadiness. Nuts are a bit more broad here. It actually tastes pretty nice. I greedily want more hazelnut however. Again, some light nutted coffee and a touch of chocolate.

M-Medium bodied that feels watery sometimes but then it feels chewy right after. The feel varies on my palate. Softer carbonation.

O/D-I love all things Hazelnut. Still waiting for a beer that I can describe as "Nutella Beer". This was kinda close. I enjoyed this more than Sam Smith's Nut Brown Ale (which I had very recently). This was also kinda like a milder version of Founders' Frangelic Mountain Brown. Anyway, I liked this; one of Sam Adams' better recent variety brews.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a Samuel Adams Boston Lager glass. Taken from Sam Adams's "Harvest Collection" seasonal variety pack.

Appearance: Pours a translucent, dark brown color. Has a thick, foamy head that dissipates slowly, leaving considerable lacing on the glass.

Smell: Smells strongly of hazelnuts and caramel malts. The hazelnut might be a bit overpowering for my tastes.

Taste: Starts with a nice hoppy bitterness backed by caramel sweetness. Finishes with a well-balanced flavor of hazelnut, caramel malt, and bitter hops. Surprisingly delicious.

Mouthfeel: A little on the thin side for something of this style and for a fall seasonal.

Overall: A great addition to the Sam Adams lineup. A faithful interpretation of the brown ale with a great hazelnut flavor. A perfect fall seasonal. Here's hoping that they keep this one around.

Aroma: This beer comes as advertised. All hazelnut. "It's a bit nutty" to quote Austin Powers. I get a little earthy background hop aroma and some peanut-like aromas but hazelnut is what dominates.

Appearance: Shoe leather brown pour with ruby edges. A lot off-white head that fades and leaves a sticky film on the surface.

Flavor: More hazelnut! The flavor reminds me of Nutella on wheat toast. A little bit of sweetness but fades to some bready and chewy flavors that round out the palate. There is a bit of background hop bitterness and it's dry enough that it's not overly sweet. But the nutty and bready flavors dominate. Balance is to the malt. Finish is dry.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with medium-high carbonation. The carbonation helps improve the perception of dryness.

Overall impression: A drinkable novelty. I wouldn't want it all the time but perfect for the time of year and it lives up to the label. Worth a try.

A - Clear, dark amber/light brownish, raisiny looking. Decent head retention (consistent with the rest of Sam's beers). Decent lacing.
S - Light hazelnut aroma, coffee, nutty, malts. Not an overwhelming aroma. Also consistent with Sam's beers.
T - Taste similar to aroma, light hazelnut flavor at the start, finishing with caramel sweet malts and some hop bitterness. I am wishing the hazelnut flavor in the front stayed around for a while. A fairly long finish from the malts. A bit cloying. Besides the initial hazelnut flavor, the rest is similar to many of Sam's ales. Not bad, not great either.
M - Medium mouthfeel, medium carbonation. Nothing special.
O - Not a bad beer, I really wouldn't recommend it or recommend against it. Newer beer drinkers may have a better appreciation for this.

Pours a nice clear red with a decent tan head that dissipates over a few minutes. Nice looking beer to me.

Nutty smell with hints of caramel and toffee, bit of spice as well.

Can taste the hazelnuts right up front. I am also picking up coffee flavors, as well as a hint of toffee and caramel.

Nothing really stands out on the feel, but the carbonation does stand out a bit.

Pretty decent beer, one of the better ones I've had from the seasonal packs. Goes down easy, and has a nice mix of flavors. Really nice beer for fall.

12 oz from fall 12 mix pack- frugle's

A - dark brown, black, one finger head, not much retention goes down to a thin head pretty quickly

S - cocoa, chocolate

T - chocolate. Heavy chocolate for a brown. Almost too sweet, it is a borderline "natural" chocolate taste. Hazelnut and vanilla. Maltiness and some maple syrup. Not much in the way of hops, but there is some bitterness on the finish. And a tinge of alcohol.

M - pretty solid. Carb is slightly low, but in a good way. Gets a little sticky as it warms.

O - solid brown, recommended.

Great looking brown ale here. Color is just perfect, plus it’s clear, and there’s a solid head formation.

They nailed the aroma. Such an inviting nutty scent. Never had a beer with hazlenut before, and this makes me wonder why. I’m really enjoying the smell of this. Chocolate notes are also present.

Flavor has toasted malts, hazelnut, and then a slight hop spice in the finish. Terrifically balanced. I can’t stand a brown ale to be too sweet, and thankfully this one isn’t. Body is on the lighter side of medium, with ample carbonation, allowing this beer to be enjoyed in multiples. This really is a fantastic fall beer. The hazle nut flavor is always present but never overbearing; they dialed it in nicely. And I really like the bitterness found in the finish. Again, this is just really well balanced.

Glad I got to try this and I’m excited there’s still one more in my fridge. Would definitely buy more of this given the chance. Hazel Brown: recommended!

12oz bottle from the Fall Harvest Collection
Pours a ruby-brown color with a frothy beige head, good retention and lacing. Aromas are nutty, malty, caramel, toffee, earthy, spicy. Tastes - whoa hazelnut! Nutty, toasted hazelnut, toffee, caramel, spicy. At first the hazelnut is over the top but the other malty tones help to tame it down and the flavors actually all meld pretty well. Mouth-feel is thin-to-medium bodied, creamy. Overall, for the style this needs to be more sessionable. The hazelnut is definitely showcased here, but for me it's a one & done - too much hazelnut.
