12 oz.

Pours a reddish brown with an eggshell inch head, slow dissipation.

Smells of lightly toasted grains, caramel, buttered bread and nuts.

Slightly toasty and brown sugar sweet with a whisper of hazelnut and some mildly bitter dry hoppiness. Cocoa in the finish.

Medium body with soft carbonation over the tongue.

A drinkable and enjoyable brown ale with just a hint of hazelnut, this is pretty good and enjoyable. Though its not groundbreaking, I can't think of another brown ale that is really leaps and bounds ahead of it. Certainly worth having.

12oz bottle served in a glass beer mug.

L - clear amber color with a off-white head that thinned to a ring.

S - hazelnut with sweet toffee.

T - sweeter tasting brown ale with lots of hazelnut flavor.

F - medium bodied, crisp and refreshing.

O - good fall beer.

12oz bottle poured into a snifter.

A: Dark mahogany brown with a half a finger of white head. Lacing is minimal and carbonation is medium by the looks of it.

S: Freshly brewed hazelnut coffee with a slightly spicy side to it. They definitely hit the nail on the head with the aroma for this one, it smells awesome.

T: The hazelnuts hit the palette first followed by a dark coffee roast flavor. Slightly sweet malts play backup and don't overpower the brew. Just enough hop bitterness to keep it interesting. Not picking up the spiciness that I got on the nose, but I'm not deducting points for that. This is pretty solid.

M: Medium carbonation with a long and lingering hazelnut coffee finish.

O: I've always had a problem with SA, but I'm starting to respect them more in recent times. This is definitely the best one I've ever had by them (followed by Norse Legend, which is also very solid) and I would love to see six packs or bombers of this, but that's probably not going to happen. The one gripe I have with SA is that I HATE buying their variety packs just to get two beers of a style I want to try. Fucking take out the Boston Lager and the other year round and keep it to the seasonal varieties!

I just ripped Samuel Adams for their Pumpkin Beers and their safe approach with a lack of flavors in recent years. This also is a quiet beer, but Hazel Brown has a nice smooth sweet nutty flavor and texture that some may love. I merely like. This is a subtle beer. The flavor will not overwhelm you.

This is a good fall beer. Nice job Sam. Hey guys maybe a little less in the number of varieties and a little more quality. You're starting to behave like a macro beer company throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks.

So what goes with Hazel Brown? I recommend a dose of Bach's music.

Pours a dark amber color, approaching brown, about a finger of head that fades rather quickly, bubbles slightly larger than normal, no lacing on the glass.

Smell has a huge aroma of toffee and nuttiness, the hazelnut does come through rather well to make the aroma more complex than your typical brown ale, hops are unsurprisingly lacking.

Taste is big on the roasted malt front, the hazelnut is still well represented yet not as big as it was on the nose, toffee, bit of a burnt malt bitterness in the aftertaste, body is thin but a fairly assertive carbonation distracts from it.
