Poured a clear , darker reddish brown , with a small offwhite head which left a bit of lace. The aroma is of fairly rich and sweet malt , bit of dark fruit , and some chocolate. Taste is nice and smooth with a fair amount of roasty and sweet malt , a light smoky character , brown bread ,slight chocolate , caramel , brown sugar, hint at a dark fruit , balancing bitterness , and dryer finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a slightly slick quality. Not a bad scotch ale at all , very quaffable and i liked the peaty/smoked quality. Definatly worth a try , a bit like a smoky doppelbock.

Poured pint (from throwback pack) can into Sam glass. Always found this beer flat and underwhelming. The peaty sweetness gives it a lingering syrupy mouth. Not terrible but nothing I would buy regularly.

"Best by 4/4/24"; drank 11/18/23 @ the Yarchives.

Semi-opaque see-through orange/brown appearance.

A rough pour yielded a huge tan head; a thick curtain of tree-rung lacing remained.

Mild caramel & a hint of smoke notes in the nose.

Creamy medium mouthfeel.

Campfire smoke & mild caramel flavors.

Pretty tame, overall, with smoke being the dominate note. Not great, but it's drinkable.

Yes, I'm completely aware that this Sammy Scotch ale has been retired. So sad.

I remember years ago that you could buy full six packs of it. So damn good!

Anyway, as in most cases with the Boston Beer/Samuel Adams offerings, this old standard is still tough to beat.

I have BEGGED President Jim to bring it back. Maybe someday?

Yet another classic to be added to my Favorite Beer Hall of Fame.

It's still fun and good beer just makes things just a little bit better.

12 oz. bottle into tulip

A- Pours a mahogany amber. Lumpy light tan head leaves great lacing, and nice clarity.

S- Caramel, a bit smoky and woody, with a faint dark fruit note.

T- More smoky in the flavor, but an underlying sweet caramel character.

M- Body is medium, with a smooth finish. Yet, has a mild tannic aftertaste.

O- Well made. Smoky character is subtle but nice.
