Poured from a 12oz bottle

A - Very dark red, ruby with a nice thick head that hangs around for a looong time. Nice tight bubbles and off-white

S - Caramel and light hops. I think I actually smell swedish fish.

T&M - Very smooth and creamy with a moderate hop bitterness upfront with light toffee in the background. More hops than I expected but a nice balance of hops and sweetness.

Very good overall. Doesn't touch Belhaven Wee Heavy in my view, but very good still.

Poured a dark amber with a frothy white head. Smell slightly smoky, malty and sweet with caramel and molasses. Taste was malty up front, going to sweet then smoky, slightly hoppy finish. Good beer very drinkable, nothing special, just a good beer. Southampton Scotch Ale is a more extreme interpretation of this style, much more interesting though this is more drinkable.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a medium purplish brown color with a thick, off-white head that fades quickly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: Vanilla malty aroma and a little bit of smokiness in the background.

T: The smokiness is much stronger in the taste, which overall is malty but bitter, with flavors of vanilla & caramel.

M: Very smooth, with a medium body, light-to-medium carbonation, dry finish and leaves some stickiness behind.

D: Tasty and goes down easy, although it’s just a little bit filling, it’s a beer I could stay with for a while.

I haven’t had any other beers of this style, but I certainly wasn’t expecting the smoky flavor. However, the more I drink it, the better it enhances the overall drinking experience. I suppose if I smoked, this would be really good beer to have with a cigar.

All around a good scotch ale with a nice deep reddish-brown hue and a good head with a thin lace around the glass as it drains.

Smell is malty with a hint of smoke. Light citric twinge barely discernable above the thick malt.

Thick and chewy with a ton of malt and a hint of smoke and bitterness. Has a bit of a barleywine taste as well, finishes with a slightly sour twang.

A nice ale that is damn good I must say.

Appearance: Pours a dark amber/caramel color with a one finger white head. Minimal lacing.

Smell: Caramel malt scent. Very sweet yet not overpowering at all.

Taste: Smoky caramel with a hint of sweetness. Faint taste of scotch whisky which comes from the peat-smoking. Finishes with a nice, light hoppy bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied beer which goes down smooth. Fairly high carbonation.

Drinkability: Medium drinkability. I could have two or three of these without hesitation but would not want more than that in one sitting as it is fairly filling.

Overall: Try it. It's different, but I really enjoyed it.

One of my personal Sam Adams favorites. Tasted from a bottle poured into "perfect pint" glass
Beautiful amber color. nice full head lacing on glass. Sweet tones on first check then nice subtle smokey aroma. Wonderful full flavor sits on you palette. Not a great choice for a hot summer day, geat for cooking. (use as a marinade for BBQ)

12 oz brown longneck with a freshness “notch”. Note that I noticed that SA now best by dates their 12 packs on the lids, this is a nice touch.

Poured into a standard pint, the beer is a reddish brown with a thick beige head. Decent lacing.

The nose is of slightly roasted malts, dark fruit and brown sugar.

My first impression of the taste is slightly smoky and sweet. I get sugared plums and grains. This is tasty and the bit of smoke in the background adds a nice touch.

The mouth is just thick enough. I’m on the fence if this one is a session beer or not, but it sure is tasty.

Fairly dense, dark cream colored head leaves some nice. Aroma is nice and malty; kind of biscuity/doughy with a bit of caramel. Transparent, deep mahogany colored beer with a ruby hue. Body isn't too thick, but the mouthfeel is still soft and chewy. Flavor is just sweet enough. Tastes like a bit of caramel and some toasted bready goodness. The finish is slightly bitter and just a tad tangy. A good scotch ale that would probably go over well with a wide variety of beer drinkers.
