12 oz. bottle poured into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint Glass. Liquid portion is brown, but not too dark brown like most porters, more like a slightly darker than average brown ale. When you hold up to the lights the whole thing is basically a hearty mahogany amber highlight. Light tan head with some pretty good lacing on it.

Smell is good, sweeter than your average porter. Very roasty, a little bit of coco, coffee, and pretty nutty. It's a little subtle, but there is certainly a natural maple sugar smell at the end, pretty good.

Taste is pretty much on par with the smell. A little more biscuity and doughy than in the smell. Certainly a earthy pecan nuttiness blended with a more generous maple flavor, way more so than the smell. The sweetness outweighs the normal roasty features of a porter, not bad, just a different take. I already know that Sam Adams knows how to brew a porter, HOliday Porter is probably my favorite.

Mouthfeel is pretty good, slightly thinner than I'd normally want in a porter. As thin at it is, it's still smooth. Lacks a the complexity to push it over the top to be great. Pretty drinkable though, I'm digging it. A good porter, could be great if it had just a little more.

Appearance nice and dark, little to no head or foam afloat.
Smells like a decent porter, faint, faint maple aroma. It is a fine touch. I am a fan of porters and stouts so this particular samuel adams has an advantage. It tastes wonderful. Again, the maple and pecan is quite faint in the taste, almost just a cane sugar note or something like this. Overall I rate this a 4.00

Slightly less than OK. I got it as part of a mixed seasonal 12- pack (I'm a sucker for mixed 12-packs to try out a few of a breweries' different offerings) , otherwise I tend to stick to IPA's and other hoppy types without really trying a broader range of a brewer's styles. So while I normally retch at the thought of a pecan/maple flavor beer, I tried it anyway. It turned out as bad as I had feared, with the taste being an artificial-flavor rendition of maple and (lesser) pecan. Turrible from Sam Adams. I still enjoy several of their other less bizarre flavors. It's very possible that I just don't appreciate this style of beer.

Color- dark brown with ruby tint. Head- mocha creamy medium head.

Aroma- complex including maple syrup, pecan pie, and hint of coffee.

Taste- Starts fairly sweet with maple syrup dominating, has good porter characteristics including deep roasted malt and touches of coffee and smoke, finishing with a lingering charcoal and pie taste. Like a pecan pie with a cup of espresso on the side.

Poured from 355 ml bottle into a Liefmans Goudenband glass (my preferred all purpose beer tasting glass). Tasted March 2013.
