Appearance: Deep amber in color, verging on black, with a fairly large tan head, which retains well, and scattered patchy lacing.

Aroma: Bitter cocoa, maple syrup, and to an altogether surprising degree, pecans dominate the aroma. The pecan notes are more prominent than in any other beer I have had.

Taste: Opens strong, with lots of maple and pecans, atop a classic porter base. AS the taste progresses, the pecans and maple dominate, wit the porter offering roasted coffee and smoke notes., and bitter chocolate Towards the finish, the maple rises to dominate the close of the taste.

Mouth feel: Smooth, soft, and fairly full, with a hint of carbonation.

Drinkability/notes: A really creative take on the American Porter style. Although this is a Spring seasonal, it seems very appropriate for Autumn, with its superb use of maple and pecans.

Presentation: Packaged in a custom twelve-ounce brown glass long neck bottle with a pry-off crown, served in a New Belgium Brewing chalice.

A-Prune in color, very dark brown with ruby highlights. One finger of sandy head that dissipates fast. Spotty lacing that slides down slow like syrup does. A bit opaque in color, flat and dull. Could use some lighter brown swirled in there to contrast the dark. But the ruby highlights give the body some life. The head also stays until the last drop so more bonus points.

S-Expected maple syrup and pecans. More roasted nuts like cashew, Brazilian, etc. Oaky subtleties. Slight lactose. Cinnamon ice cream. Great smells but I wish they were more pungent and evident.

T-Brown sugar. Nutty. Syrupy. Slight smoke. Toffee. Hints of coffee & milk chocolate. Coffee roll. Like the smell, taste could benefit from being more of itself, bolder. I want more smoke, bitterness and sweetness.

M-Medium body. Low-high carbonation. Carbonation is below average leaving the body to fend for itself with a thin inky feel. But the touch of syrup helps, giving that ink an oily, slightly viscous feel on the aftertaste/after-feel. Gets a tad creamy with time so that's good. Tad more bitter & boozy too with warming.

O-Tasty enough. Needs more hops and malt even. Not enough bitters and sweets. Sips more like a Black Lager than Porter. Just build upon what is currently here and there you go. But nonetheless, a tasty beer you have to sip quick before flavor dies. Not a bad sampler to have two of in a 12-pack seasonal box.

Pours a dark brown with a slightly creamy beige head, slowly fading and some lacing. Aroma and taste of sweet malt, roasted caramel and some pleasant maple syrup flavor. Palate is a medium body, slightly creamy with mild carbonation and a bit sticky. Finishes with a sweet lightly roasted caramel and a bit of nutty pecan maple syrup ending. Overall a good drinking and flavorful brew.

A: Reddish-brown pour with a healthy lasting khaki colored head that had a firm, whipped consistency. Good rush of visible carbonation climbs along the vessel walls. Thick, meaty deposits of lace adore the glass.

S: Fresh wet coffee grounds, dark fruit (black cherry skin), dry maple syrup, earthy tree bark and pecans.

T: Sweet, dried maple syrup and coffee for flavor. Toffee and caramel sweetness chimes in with some smoked earthy, lightly burnt bitterness. Pecan and chocolate malts combine with a rich coffee presence along with some dark fruit skin. Earthy bitterness, soil, roasty fade off the tongue.

M: Chewy, oats, lush body, mid-range carbonation with an lingering earthy bitterness.

O: Overall nice flavor, sweet dried maple-coffee really hits the intended mark. Easy drinkability. Intriquing and different.

Samuel Adam's Maple Pecan Porter 6pk bottles $9.99(OH)

12 oz brown bottle poured into a stemless white wine glass. freshness date marked as a notch. i prefer a printed date.

pours a very dark red brown almost black. i can see light through the glass. a two finger tan-white creamy head. gives way to decent lacing. not great but good.

smells like a porter should. with hints of maple and pecan. coffee and chocolate linger behind the foreground.

the taste is surprisingly good. kind of bitter at first with coffee and chocolate. finishes with a bitter-sweet maple pecan taste.

mouth feel is pretty light. but most porters are. carbonation is great. the carmel feeling clings to your mouth and grabs a hold. again SA brews towards the low ABV side, but i have no complaints.

overall a good porter. the maple and pecan are unique. but are very subtle and pick up at the end. the coffee over powers the chocolate which is out of balance. but i was impressed with SA and this porter. its no game changer, but a good quality porter. i would buy it again but, my go to porter is and always will be Edmund Fitzgerald. cheers!
