Has to be the first pale hippy offering from Sam Adams that I've actually looked out for. Had to get some mix pack with a REALLY promising sounding maple pecan worst nightmare thing.

but on to this innovative India pale lager... Just like jacks abbey has been ding for a while now...

pours a clear light copper with a decent head. TOO clear though. Looks too thin and watery.

smell actually shows a lot of promise. All hops. Mostly sharp, bright citric notes... With a bit of resinous action in the background. Not really any hints of malt sweetness.

flavor... Is shocking, given the brewery. Big hop flavor, moderate bitterness, and only a bit of malt sweetness to distract. Hop character follows the nose- big sharp citrus in front, with some light earthy resins underneath. Bitterness only really kicks in near the middle, letting all the hop flavors jump out in front.

Crisp, clean and even on the palate. Plenty of flavor and a bit of sharpness on the finish. Super drinkable.

overall... A rather suprising one from Sam Adams. A solid ipa-ish brew with plenty of hop character and no real flaws. Impressive.

12 ounce bottle poured into a pint glass.

A - Pours a golden color with some haziness with a firm long lasting white head.

S - A burst of pine and citrus hops.

T - Citrus, particularly grapefruit as well as some pine with some malt in the background.

M - Very rich with excellent carbonation.

O - Really great hop flavor, especially in a beer with such moderate ABV. This is a great thirst quencher and I intend to use it as such.

Best by Aug 2014 at 45 degrees into standard pint glass
Aroma of faint citrus
Head small (2 cm), white, creamy with small rocks, mostly diminishing into 3 mm layer
Lacing good – nearly complete rings
Body yellow with slight haze
Flavor starts as a typical lager, with the white grapefruit bitterness overriding the malt backbone. However, the hop presence is more marked than in the standard lager, ending in an astringent chalkiness.
Palate light to medium, watery, carbonation lively

A solid “meh”, not too exciting lager with a little more hops than most, but still not close to an IPA.
