Appearance: Dark, slightly hazy, ruby brown with a thin, fizzy head that settles quickly. Lacing appears but sluggishly slides back down the glass.

Aroma: Spicy, grainy aroma of wheat, overripe banana and holiday spices.

Taste & Mouthfeel: Flavor on the tongue is spicy, with earthy clove, and bitter cinnamon bark. Sweet notes of red raisin, overripe banana, and molasses mingle with the woody spice, and blend well with the smooth texture. The finish sees the malt flavors appearing with a biscuity, toasted character, and a bit of bite makes the alcohol presence known.

Final Word: Very rich, complex, and satisfying! The earthy spices, sweet, dark fruit, and buttery, bready malts all sit in great balance with each other, and present an experience similar to eating a refined, spice cake dessert. My only complaint with this brew is that the alcohol comes through a bit too much, and makes the finish a little boozy. This isn’t completely unexpected, as it is a Quad with 10.2% ABV, but masking that flavor would have made for a near perfect brew! Only avoid this one if you just absolutely can’t stand a strong boozy character; everyone else should snatch it up, especially if you love banana bread or holiday fruit cake.

Presentation: It was poured from an odd shaped brown 1pt. 9.4oz bottle into a tulip glass. The lable lists the abv at 10.2%.

Appearance: The body has a dark orange amber color with good clarity and visible carbonation. This is topped off with a tall light tan head. It’s head fades slowly to just a thin creamy film covering. Lacing coats the glass as I tip the beer to my lips then slowly slides down the sides of the glass.

Smell: The aroma has loads of dark fruit, holiday fruitcake and sweet maltiness.

Taste / Palate: There are nice sweet malt notes throughout. It has notes of dates, raisins, black currants and sweet bready/fruitcake like goodness. It’s hops add a touch of spice and herbal bitterness on the back end. The solid 10.2% abv adds a mild boozy warming feel. This all comes on nice medium to full feeling body with smooth carbonation.

750 ml cork and caged bottle poured into a tulip.
10.2% ABV, "Enjoy this ale now or age it to further develop unique flavors."

A - Dark plum purple-ish in color, Tetravis has mahogany highlights underneath it's steady canvas-colored head that leaves little lacing on the glass.

S - Classic Belgian yeast imparts immediate authenticity into Tetravis as this rich and malty beer starts with a complex blend of moist banana bread, prune and figs, and earthy clay and wet rocks. Robust bready maltiness has a borderline toasted characteristic to it that works nicely with suggestions of molasses and the oak barrel it's aged in.

T - Tetravis is a deep brew, unfolding layers of complexity as it warms up while mirroring the aroma quite nicely. Sweet dribbles of molasses cover chunks of dark rock sugar while dark fruitiness pulls forth fig newton, prune pit, and sticky raisin. Hops are absent but the classic Belgian yeast spiciness balances the flavor well with an exclamation of white pepper, clay, and clove.

M - Despite being a darker, malty brew, Tetravis has a lively carbonation feel that keeps the stomach-warming brew from becoming a chore to drink. It's richness washes down wonderfully with balance making it disturbingly drinkable for it's alcohol content.

O - For a long time a particular Belgian quad was hailed as one of the world's greatest beers. It could have been partly due to it's limited availability but I'd contest that this style is one of the hardest to replicate for American brewers because of it's deep complexity and inherent yeast characteristics. Having said that, Samuel Adam's nails the quad style with Tetravis so well, it could have come straight from Belgium. Rich maltiness provides a sturdy base while dark fruit and spice notes co-mingle with absolutely certainty; a completely brilliant beer!
