Drink by September 2013. Poured into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint.
Appearance: A beautiful beer. Crystal clear copper with a soft sand colored, three finger head on top. The head sticks around for awhile, and the lacing, at least at the start, as ridiculous.
Smell: Damn, I love hops. Serious amounts of pine and resin. The label also mentions grapefruit, but I don't really get that ... there is a sweetness in there, though.
Taste/feel: Hard for me to pick this one. As dark as this IPA is, I figured it'd maybe be pretty sweet or at least be balanced, but it's not -- this beer is definitely on the bitter side, at least after the first few sips, and tastes pretty much nothing like it smells. I get almost a roasty-sweet sort of malt flavor on the start of the sip, followed by a fairly brief parade of piney hops, and then it finishes with a dusty/gritty sort of malt flavor. It's not bad at all, but the smell had me expecting something entirely different. In that way, it almost reminds me of Alpha King by Three Floyds, which is a darker APA that bursts with hops in the aroma, but then has a maltier taste. This almost drinks like some sort of amber or something more than an IPA... ALMOST. It's good, but I didn't see it coming. The feel is quite smooth with a medium carbonation -- it lets the hops do the work on your tongue rather than the prickly carbonation, which is good. Just a note: This beer becomes almost TOO SWEET once it warms up.
Has to be the best in the 2013 LongShot contest, but not by too significant of a margin. It looks awesome, it smells great, and it has a solid flavor.

Pours a deep orange amber with a long lasting medium beige head, good lacing throughout. Aroma and Taste of floral pine hops and caramel malt which becomes more notable as it warms up, also some notes of brown sugar. Palate is a medium body with a smooth texture and good carbonation. Finishes with floral pine hops, some mild orange peel notes, caramel malt and some mild brown sugar on the end. Overall seems to have a good balance, smooth and nice flavor, a good brew.

I have had this and its two companions sitting in my reefer for over a year! It just seemed like they would get shunted to the side in favor of CANs or any other bright, shiny objects that came into my view. I have now dedicated myself to eradicating the backlog of bottles in my life and these suddenly came due.
From the bottle: "Zack and his friend Pat decided to create a brew loaded with their seven favorite hops. A showcase of US hop [...] varieties and true to an Imperial American IPA, this beer has big grapefruit, pine & resinous notes."
I employed a gentle pour, then swirled the beer in the glass to produce a brief finger of tawny head that quickly fell to wisps. Color was a deep-amber/copper (SRM = > 13, < 17) with NE-quality clarity. The hops had reduced over the elapsed time, but the pine resinousness was still there, accompanied by a caramel malt sweetness. Mouthfeel was medium and incredibly, still bringing the fusel alchol heat! The grapefruit notes had faded, but the pine and resin was prevalent and it was licking a pine tree. I like the way that this had mellowed to become a very pleasant DIPA, where I find them to be very sharp when they are fresh. Finish was dry, between the alcohol heat and the prevalent hops. I was tasting caramel malt, but overall, it was dry, plain and simple.

"Zach and his friend Pat decided to create a brew loaded with their seven favorite hops. A showcase of US hop varieties and true to an Imperial American IPA, this beer has big grapefruit, pine & resinous notes." Brewed in the style of an American Imperial IPA. This is one of the winning entries in the 2013 Longshot American Homebrew Contest. Available in 12 oz. bottles and on limited draft.
Poured from a 12 oz. bottle to a tulip glass. Served above 59º Fahrenheit.
(Appearance) Pours a golden white creamy head over a deep copper body. Clarity is marred by dense haziness. Retention is good, lacing is light but solid. 4
(Smell) Bready caramel malt sweetness, biscuity grain malt and a combination of peppery, herbal, piney, resinous and fruity hop aromas generate a bold bitterness. 4
(Taste) The malt profile is moderately bodied with a mild biscuity grain malt and a light caramel malt sweetness. Peppery, herbal and fruity hop notes come through most in the flavor, fairly mild in presentation with the fruity hop prevailing in the finish. Bitterness is above average, neither brutal nor reserved, it makes for a highly drinkable and well-balanced DIPA. 4
(Mouthfeel) Texture is smooth, clean and slightly sticky. Carbonation generates a soft frothiness for a smooth, silky mouthfeel. Body is medium for the style and medium/high overall. Balance is equally sweet to bitter. Alcohol presence is light and there are no discernible off characters. 3.75
(Overall) A very nice, if not too ordinary American Double IPA with lots of hop flavor and bitterness. Drinkability is very high and the balance is even with neither sweetness nor hop bitterness prevailing. This is a very good introduction to the style because of its accessibility. I found this the single standout beer in the variety pack. 4
