this is the beer flower wheat from the longshot contest brought to us by samuel adams. this beer has nice color- it reminds me of honey with a slight cloudiness. a very slight sweetness to the smell, but its not very potent at all. the taste is sweet with some mild hops lingering at the end. over all i think this is a very mild drinkable beer, nice for a warm afternoon.

I have had this and its two companions sitting in my reefer for over a year! It just seemed like they would get shunted to the side in favor of CANs or any other bright, shiny objects that came into my view. I have now dedicated myself to eradicating the backlog of bottles in my life and these suddenly came due.

From the bottle: "With the hoy summer months and fun gatherings in mind, James brewed a refreshing wheat [...] beer with an exotic kick. This beer is smooth and light bodied with the delicate flavors of hibiscus."

Once more, I employed a very gentle pour, but I still managed to produce a finger of fizzy, bone-white head with moderate retention. Color was solid gold (SRM = 5), which of course signaled the entrance of the Unholy Trio of Croesus, Midas and Mammon. nose had a flowery, perfume-y, honey-like sweetness. Mouthfeel was thin with a soda pop-like fizziness. The taste was light, perfume-like in its sweetness, but fairly innocuous. Finish was semi-dry, light, spritzy, Summer-like, but for me, a big ho-hum. Sorry, James. Congratulations on your win, but I just am not a fan.

"With the hot summer months and fun gatherings in mind, James brewed a refreshing wheat beer with an exotic kick. This beer is smooth and light bodied with the delicate flavors of hibiscus." Brewed in the style of an American Pale Wheat Ale with Hibiscus flowers. One of three beers produced for the 2012 Longshot American Homebrew Contest 6 pack. Available in 12 oz. bottles and on limited draft.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle to a Samuel Adams Signature glass. Served above 57º Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a frothy foamy head of a pearl white complexion over a pale amber body with a moderate haziness. Retention is average, lacing is light and streaked. 3.25

(Smell) Clean wheat malt alongside a thin cereal grain sweetness. A mild pinch of pepper spice and honey add a touch of complexity. The hibiscus generates a mildly herbaceous, slightly vegetal bitterness to pair, otherwise there is little hop aroma or perceived bitterness. Very clean and mildly potent. 3.25

(Taste) Half lightly toasted caramel grain, half malted wheat builds a soft, yet simple body with an appropriate level of sweetness. Subtly joined with a dash of coriander, it finishes clean with a mellow sweetness and a mildly bitter herbal, tea-like finish. 3.5

(Mouthfeel) Texture is soft, smooth, slightly fluffy. Carbonation generates a modest frothiness for a fuller body. Body is medium for the style, light/medium overall. Balance is slightly sweet over spicy and herbal bitterness. Alcohol presence is very low and there are very few off-characters. 3.25

(Overall) Beer Flower Wheat is fairly simple, borderline pedestrian which can be expected of the style. The hibiscus doesn't impact the flavor much aside from generating a slightly more tea-like herbal flavor, most notable in the finish. Perhaps decent by the style, but I found it too plain to be enjoyable. 3.25

Poured this beer and it has a pale orange color body with a very small head. The smell is kinda fruity like banana. The taste has a banana flavor to it, no hops and some malt but not much, also is kinda sour. I was hoping for more floral notes. The mouthfeel is kinda watery and overall ok.

The nose is perfect, but dissapates somewhat as you get near the bottom of the glass.
The mouthfeel is velvety and almost thin.
The bittering is not overdone and does not linger.
Great for spring, summer, fall, and Christmas!

I really wish I could have purchased this in a 6pack, because this brew is worth sampling at different temperatures... It is highly drinkable... far more very refreshing than even lemonade on a hot day.
It is the only "longshot" I would purchase over and over.

Poured into sam adams custom glass, color is gold to light copper, head is off white, 1/2 inch thick at first, then dissipates to a thin ring, no lacing.

Smell is light malt sweetness, some hints of bread, and maybe sour or fruity note. Hard to pinpoint the hibiscus.

Taste is pretty neutral, some very light malt flavors, not off or adjunct noted, wheat is thin, shows up more in the form of bread, hops are not strong in taste but noted in the bitterness; hibiscus may be showing as some lighter sour or fruitiness.

Mouthfeel is biting on the tongue, either overcarbonated or stronger but flavorless hops creating this sensation.

Overall, a neutral beer, i'd like a bit more wheat flavor. I understand hop flavors are most likely subdued or low for hibiscus flavoring to become apparent but I'm not finding it easily.

Purchased as part of the miexed 6-pack. No specs per the website or bottle other than this is a wheat ale brewed with hibiscus flowers and is 5.8% ABV.

Pours out to a slightly hazy pale golden forming a tall poofy off white head with very good retention and lacing in part due to it's brisk carbonation, ~3.0 carbs or so. The nose is on a very non-descript standard american wheat. No phenols, no DMS, no grain or hop aromas...just kinda a beer "smell" with hints of vanilla. Mouthfeel is really not that brisk, more smooth with a medium body. The taste is rather non-descript as well, one thinks "beer" and "fruit" and "grain" but that is about it. Subtle vanilla presence. Slight yeast bite. Very mild to non-existent bitterness. I've had hibiscus and this doesn't really taste like it to me. The finish is kinda blah and leaves a slick coating on the tongue...peculiar.

Rather boring and bland. I wouldn't choose to buy this again. This years longshot was a complete dud compared to prior years.
