DATE TASTED: September 21, 2013 ... GLASSWARE: Howard's Pub pint glass... OCCASION: first a strong PSU win...APPEARANCE: beautiful chestnut-red body with a creamy white head; laces sporadically and slickly... AROMA: sweet,, slightly toasted oat malts with sot hops--the citrus is secondary to the doughy malts--ESB in its scent...PALATE: medium-bodied, rewardingly smooth and just substantial enough to have a presence...TASTE: malty, mild and unobtrusively sweet... OVERALL: a rather straight-laced, straight-forward, functionally sessionable beer--not one I'd seek out or miss, but one I would enjoy over a variety of mouth-rinsing macros...

"Mild ales rose to popularity in the 1800s as the refreshing brew of choice for English railway laborers. This modern mild, a smooth, sweet, malty brew with a hint of ruby color, is still a satisfying choice for the end of a long day. Cheers!" Brewed in the style of an English Dark Mild Ale. A one-off beer brewed for the fall 2013 Variety sampler. Available in 12 oz. bottles and limited draft.
Poured from a 12 oz. bottle to a Samuel Adams Signature pint glass. Served above 58º Fahrenheit.
(Appearance) Pours a tan white head of a frothy crisp consistency over a caramel amber with very high clarity and minimal haze. Carbonation is plentiful and relaxed. Retention is average, lacing is light and spotty. 3.75
(Smell) Moderately sweet with nutty malts, some lightly toasted caramel, a pinch of dry graininess and little to no perceived hop aroma or presence. Aroma is very clean and decidedly light on the nose for it's focus on malt content. Fairly well balanced, although much of the bitterness that rounds out the sweetness is earthy and grainy character. Potency is medium. 3.25
(Taste) Big notes of toffee up front, finishing with a touch of roasted malt and a prolonged moist but light caramel candy sweetness. The little balance needed comes from a mild dry earthy grain. There isn't much else that defines the aroma, although the lightness of this beer makes the malt content very accessible and highly drinkable. 3.5
(Mouthfeel) Texture is light, slick, mildly chewy. Carbonation generates a very low fluffiness for a very soft, smooth and subtle mouthfeel. Body is medium for the style and light/medium overall. Balance is slightly sweet over bitter, although the lightness of the body keeps it in check. Alcohol presence is very light and there are no off flavors to speak of. 3.75
(Overall) A great sessionable ale with a surprisingly pleasant malt presentation, feels perfect for the season. One of the most satisfying new beers I've had from Samuel Adams in quite some time. 3.75
