Picked this up in a make your own 6 pack

The smell was kinda skunky did not appeal to me.

The taste was mild as advertised but nothing really jumped out at me just tasted like a plain old craft beer.

The aftertaste was not very good, kinda sour, made me want to brush my teeth.

Overall not a horrible beer but much better beers for less money out there. But if amber beers are your thing then give this one a try. (421 characters)

Appearance:high carbonation, 1/2 inch head, clear, copper/red in color

Smell: grain and toasted malt

Taste: caramel, grain, toasted malt, and slight woodsy hops

Mouthfeel: medium-light body, high carbonation, sweet with slight bitterness

Overall: I have liked a lot of Sam Adams seasonal specialty beers, but I find this one to be ok, or just short of it. It hits a bunch of what the style should be like. Not bad enough to turn away, but not overly memorable either. (471 characters)

Purchased as part of the 2013 fall pack. It pours a very nice reddish brown, and clear. Not ruby, but nice looking. An inch off white head that slowly fades over a few minutes.

The smell is malt and slight roast. The taste is malt, caramel, and nut. The nut is very light, and I can't pick up the hops other than a slight offset on the sweet of the caramel taste.

I am rating this highly, because it is a smoother, well balanced, very drinkable version of their red. I like their Irish red, and I would pay 25-50% per six more to have this available year round in place of that. Every facet is slightly better tasting and smoother than that already good beer. (661 characters)

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a deep brownish caramel ruby red with a lot of rising bubbles. Huge four finger off white head with decent retention. Leaves a lot of clingy lacing around the glass.

Smell: A sweet, bready, and toasty malt forward aroma with hints of caramel. Toasted malts upfront with hints of biscuit, caramel, toffee, toasted bread, grain, cracker, and tea. Also some hints of nuts and brown sugar. Mild hints of earthy hops. Fairly damp and earthy smelling. A pretty decent toasty malt driven aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a toasty, bready, and fairly sweet caramel malt driven taste that is fairly earthy. Bready toasted malts with notes of biscuit, toasted bread, sweet caramel, toffee, cracker, grains, nuts, and tea. Subtle brown sugar like sweetness. Some earthy hop bitterness comes through towards the finish. Nicely toasty and earthy. Decent taste.

Mouthfeel: Light to medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Very creamy and smooth.

Overall: A decent malt forward mild ale. Nice caramel malt taste. (1,095 characters)

DATE TASTED: September 21, 2013 ... GLASSWARE: Howard's Pub pint glass... OCCASION: first a strong PSU win...APPEARANCE: beautiful chestnut-red body with a creamy white head; laces sporadically and slickly... AROMA: sweet,, slightly toasted oat malts with sot hops--the citrus is secondary to the doughy malts--ESB in its scent...PALATE: medium-bodied, rewardingly smooth and just substantial enough to have a presence...TASTE: malty, mild and unobtrusively sweet... OVERALL: a rather straight-laced, straight-forward, functionally sessionable beer--not one I'd seek out or miss, but one I would enjoy over a variety of mouth-rinsing macros... (643 characters)

Burnt copper in color with a small head, some lace, an ok retention. Aroma is malty at the front with scents of molasses, brown bread, oatmeal cookie minus the raisins. Not hoppy. Pretty nice. Taste is crisp and clean with a little bit of light bitterness. Flavors match the aroma. This is pleasant to drink and certainly sessionable. A very appropriate fall seasonal beer. Texture is smooth with a hint of malty viscosity broken up by tingly fine carbonation. Light body that feels medium at times.

This beer is a great addition to their Fall seasonal 12 pack. I'm enjoying it. (580 characters)

Appearance - Pours a relatively clear ruby brown with an off-white finger width head. Fair retention, resulting in a broken layer of suds across the surface. Lacing is small and spotty, with little stick.

Smell - A nice nose, throwing out notes of caramel, toasted malt, fruity esters and a touch of earth.

Taste - Lighter on the tongue than in the aroma, but nice balance nonetheless. Caramel, lightly toasted breadiness, mild, slightly sour fruity esters and a well placed spiced hop bite. Light, but doesn't lack for flavor.

Mouthfeel - Medium body with lively carbonation. Hints of diacetyl. Goes down smooth.

Overall - I'm not too familiar with the English Dark Mild style, but I rather enjoyed this one. Easy drinker. Just enough complexity to keep my tongue interested. It wouldn't pain me to see this one in their future Autumn mix releases. (853 characters)
