Definately a stout, however held up to the light one can see through the black. No head upon serving, but a light ring of tan around the edges. Mouthfeel is light for a stout, like a watered down Guiness, only having an overpowering vanilla flavor and aroma. Non-beer drinkers (ie Bud/Coors devotees) love this as a dark, and claim to instantly love dark beer upon sampling it. Weak hops with even weaker malt (some 2-row with a splash of black patent maybe?) A session beer at best, and could also pass as a great extract homebrew attempt, pitiful for an actual established brewery however.

head and great lace.

Smell- Very sweet you can smell the Vanilla and chocolate malts.

Taste- If it wasn't for a little bit of a burnt flavor in the initial taste the beer would be great. The taste is very balanced between chocolate malts and vanilla. It is just a burnt flavor the keeps coming back.

Mouthfeel- A full bodied beer with a bit of a creamy texture.

Drinkability- Good.

It is a very dark color, basically black. It has a small, thin head of brown foam, leaves a thin lace string on the glass. Aroma has coffee, cocoa and lots of vanilla. Flavor mirrors the smell. Nicely balanced blend of dark roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, slightly charred and smokey. Vanilla and oaky-wood notes at the end. The mouthfeel is on the full side, but not too sticky or cloying. A nice one to sip on, but wouldn't want more than one in a sitting. I thought it was very good.

I just read the previous reviews. My thoughts are that the reviewers that rated this low either don't like the style or they got a bad batch.
It is a deep black beer, not old used motor oil black but getting pretty close. The beer has a small head, but leaves a film on the glass. Aroma is coffee and vanilla, the vanilla being the definite winner. Flavor is fairly nice the balance really isn't there, the beer tends to be sweet. It's like when you mistakenly add too much creamer to your coffee. Bummer but not a big deal. They must use some roast malt because their is bit of burnt tobacco that shows while the beer is on your tounge. It then fades and the vanilla starts taking over but you still get some coffee and chocalately flavors. The mouthfeel isn't really anything special nor is bad, just average. I myself could sit and have a pint then I would have to make a change, the sweetness is nice but in moderation, desert beer?
Overall a decent brew, its a hard style to get correct, they make a solid effort. Don't fear the vanilla stout, give it a try.

This beer is dessert in a glass. It pours with a nice creamy head and has great color. Some of you have commented that the vanilla is overpowering. I thought the vanilla was strong but not overpowering. It's not a session beer, but would work very well as a dessert beer.

On the subject of bourbon. There is NO bourbon in this beer. No chips, no flavoring. The ONLY reason bourbon is in the name of the beer is because they used Madagascar Bourbon Vanilla made off the Madagascar coast on the Bourbon islands.

Sampled on tap at the Couer d'Alene Brewery in Moscow, ID. A: Thick brown to black, minimal amount of tan head that goes down pretty quick. S: Some chocolate, lots of vanilla, distant hops. T: The vanilla is pretty overwhelming, but there are some burnt malts and coffee flavors in there. A tad stale. M: A little thin, moderate to minimal carbonation. D: I'm a bit confused--on BA there are two separate Vanilla Bourbon Stouts listed for Couer d'Alene, the other beer is listed with an abv of 10% and the beer I tasted today is definitely nowhere NEAR that. It's a totally decent beer, but I do get the feeling that the brewhouse needs to clean their taps. Either that or there is just something fundamentally skunky about this beer.
